Believe it or not Lea Thompson had a blast making this even though it was terrible. She’s a director now and actually pitched a Howard the Duck MCU film using one of the newest (and very good btw) Howard the Duck comic runs. After getting sent to Earth Howards stories are usually about him being a private detective. Honestly trying to make a “kids film” out of this material was just one of MANY mistakes! Originally Robin Williams was going to voice Howard until he snuck on set and saw that the director was a massive d-bag to everyone on set. He quit right then, saving himself from the embarrassment of this thing!

Lea Thompson actually doesn't hate having starred in this movie and appears to be quite proud to have been in something this infamous instead of embarrassed. The "Duck Coach" was Miles Chapin, an actor who knew producer couple Gloria and Willard, and since this was their first movie on their own and they weren't used to working with actors, they wanted him to help out with the acting side and give feedback on Howard. He told them that with all the special effects and with how many people were involved with making Howard there was no focus on Howard as a character, so he got everyone involved together to talk about how to make Howard work. He was also familiar with what the suit could and couldn't do and was able to tell the producers when he couldn't perform certain actions they wanted. He also acted in the movie as Carter.

Because it was asked, yes, in the Marvel comic, Howard comes from an alternate Earth from a parallel dimension. His creator, Steve Gerber, said it was a planet of anthropomorphic animals, but writers have tried to retcon it to be just a Duck World. Anyway, after going on an adventure with Man-Thing (don't ask), Howard falls into a chasm in a point between dimensions and ends up on Earth. The comics are full of social commentary and were sometimes used as a mouthpiece for Gerber to let out his frustration on the issues of the day. Howard has palled around with Spider-Man and Son of Satan (again, don't ask) in the comics, and has appeared in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films. Look, comics are like professional wrestling: it's all fake and dumb, but it's entertaining if you're willing to buy into the madness.

The story of this film is fascinating; it was going to be a very different movie, then "Ghostbusters" became a major hit. All of a sudden, the powers that be decided that Howard should be remade to be as much like "Ghostbusters" as possible; scientists, a major character being possessed, a sex scene with essentially an alien being, music, more sex, etc. It's always a source of amazement to me how little Hollywood wants to take a chance. "Oh, that formula was a major blockbuster? Then we just follow that formula, and it's bound to be a hit!" Never forget that in the end Film only achieves the status of "ART" when a creative team is left alone. Sometimes this still happens; but note how many Academy pictures lately are made OUTSIDE of the big studio system. Should note, for the record; this film is the FIRST Adaptation of Marvel Comics into a major release movie. Predates "Blade" by two years. And the skygina begins......... Lea Thompson has said on numerous occasions that this film almost completely killed her career, but that Howard fans are her favorites, because "it takes an awful lot of bravery to admit you like this movie and defend that statement." Boy, does it ever.

Blades by two years? You mean the punisher with Dolph Londren
@danielvandersall6756 Жыл бұрын
@@kelvinmartinez4770 Yeah, pardon me. It was over 12 years till Blade. The Lundgren "Punisher" was the first Marvel SUPERHERO film, but it was straight to video. It only had a limited release. Interestingly, it was supposed to star Christopher Lambert, but he became injured and had to bow out.

@@kelvinmartinez4770 Yeah, I guess somebody thought of Frank Castle with a Scottish accent and a sword screaming "There can be only One!" or something idiotic like that. Fun Trivia: Steve Gerber, the creator of Howard, was still salty about losing his creation to Marvel decades later, and through some backdoor shenanigans with Savage Dragon, Destroyer Duck and Image Comics he 'spiritually' freed the original Howard and left a soulless clone in his place at Marvel. The original Howard now lives disguised in witness protection under the alias 'Leonard the Duck', while his clone resides in the Marvel Universe.

A lot of people assumed this was a kid's movie because the main character is a duck from a comic book. The movie did a shitty job of explaining Howard's origin. The comic is from the 70s, so it's before your time. If you'd seen the origin in the comic I'm sure you'd be more open to the movie plot. Howard isn't a regular duck. He's a creature from another planet that was somehow transported to earth against his will, with no warning. On his planet, the ducks are the dominant life form, just as humans are on earth. Howard is similar to Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, who's not an actual raccoon, but an alien creature from a planet where the dominant life form resembles Earth's racoons. Leah Thompson having a relationship with Howard is not really different from Shatner doing the deed with the green alien babe who happened to be Yvonne Craig (who looked pretty amazing in any color).
