You should use natural choke points to defend. It takes less units to block entry and it makes the enemy units bunch together. You can place towers behind the choke point and it ensures that all the towers will be firing at the enemy.

All buildings gain +1 h,f,g. Cannot stack." 🤨 Clearly denotes that if you have the Furnace in your settlement it increases all of the work overall, with an extra bonus if placed next to common sense supplier or consumer buildings.
