Great build, Steve! I do have a tip for you, though (although you've been doing this far longer than I have). Before I paint plywood, I smear joint compound (the drywall stuff) on the exposed ply edges, let dry, and then lightly sand w/ 220. Once you paint, you'll never see those plys - they come like butter!!

I just did a quick Google search and found super lite weight and partical board versions of this for $100+. This is a solid wood, well build island that will last decades. Plus in making it yourself, it's something to be proud of every time you use it. Great project Steve.

Solid wood? It’s ply wood. And ply that clearly has lots of voids.
@arthurbrands693510 ай бұрын
It's going to take double the years and moisture for construction grade plywood to deteriorate as magically as MDF. But go ahead, use baltic birch ply, or solid bubinga, zebrawood, or koa. It's your wallet. It's still a great design, and an achievable project for weekend warriors and mere mortals. Thanks, Steve!

I appreciate the extreme closeup at 12:18 so so much. It's so good to know that having a drill hole be slightly off and the driving of the screw pull the pieces slightly apart is normal. I make things, they turn out okay, but I always doubt if little things like that add up to the less than 100% that my projects wind up. I will stop worrying and learn to love woodworking now

@charleshenbest826310 ай бұрын
Had I waited a week, I probably would have built mine right LOL! I'm actually using this concept as a drawer. Planning on a small cabinet of these for project specific tools I need near my workbench, just not all the time. Leatherworking tools, as an example. I can pull my "leather working drawer" out and bring it to my bench, then put it away after that project. These will likely be the stand for my band saw as I don't have a lot of accessories for my bnad saw, but it does need a stand - small-sized shop problems... Thanks again, Steve!

Nice project. One caution though - at 5:07 you are using your pin nailer and have your hand in the danger zone if the pin would happen to go in a different direction than you are intending. Pins and nails don't always go where you think they are heading. Ask me how I know. Thanks for the project.

For the shelf pin slide-out problem, have you considered cutting notches in the bottoms of your shelves to keep them from sliding on the pins? A router will work for round pins, a chisel for flat ones. Each notch shouldn't need more than a few seconds to cut. Then the shelves must lift a little bit before they can slide out, which should be unlikely if they're loaded.
@SeanDickinson912310 ай бұрын
Curious what the weight capacity of the door shelves are. Could they hold cans for instance? I'm not sure how strong those piano hinges are

Was it my imagination?? At first I thought the cabinet looked grey and at the end it was a blue color... was that a trick of a light or did repaint it, or you make 2 of them? Anyway a cool project, and as you know I've a long-time viewer and I miss the gripper spots when Microjig was your sponsor... then for reasons you said, you weren't doing that anymore... but as soon as I got my table saw, I got 2 of the grippers and they work Grrrrrreat! Cheers!
