Lots of action on the sheep farm this week, as we are now down to TWO WEEKS before the lambs are due!
Monday, we helped out a friend who was needing some lamb for a restaurant she's been supplying...
Grabbed my washed wool in some less than ideal weather, and took note of how close to lambing my little ewe lambs look!
Tuesday was FINALLY my barn clean out day!
Wednesday we did some post-wean sorting, and said goodbye to some older ewes... then I noticed my little Billy twin looks like she blew out her side muscle exactly where her lambs are located.
This makes me nervous.

We had a 10+ year old ewe lamb the other day. She wasn't supposed to be bred, but as the saying goes, nature finds a way, and she found her way in with one of the boys. She did fine -- it took her a few days to get her energy back, but her lamb is strong and freaking cute with freckles all over his face just like her. Needless to say, she won't be allowed near the boys this fall.

I saw a scam on a Facebook marketplace local swap group the other day. The post was a blurry picture and said "Comment the number you see in the picture to win this months contest". I commented and they messaged me asking for my PayPal email address and asked for me to send a screenshot to prove I had at least $50 in my account. Said that I won $2500. Yeah right lol Then they sent a bunch of videos of people saying they thought it was a scam but "it's the real deal!". I reported the post and the account then blocked them.

Another farming family here in the states had the same issue, but they do have give aways, but they tell you that they're doing it. BUT they've had issues with scammers too. What get's me is how bold faced some people can be when they lie. We had a guy last Sabbath (Saturday) come to our house unannounced wanting to clearly sell us something on our house. I pointed to the NO SOLICITING sign, but he said "Oh I'm not selling anything." I said good bye.

@cathrinewhite7629 I have no idea. I just know that for a business producing meat sheep, it is not cost effective in the slightest to put a sheep through surgery. Not to mention, sheep typically don't handle anesthesia well, so might lose her anyway and wouldn't be able to use the meat then. Some people will try to save a pet, and that's up to them... but comfort and quality of life need to be considered when their typical lifespan is only ~7 years.

#FLOCKWATCH : you should make it so there are metrics she can select for each sheep, which can then be used to sort the flock. Things like milk production, still births, which ewes ended up with Maede visna (because it is spread through milk from dam to lamb) etc. That will make it easier for Sandi when she needs to thin the flock. She can set the parameters, press the button and then preview the list in case she needs to tweak the parameters.

Since Maede Visna is passed through from mothers to lambs via colostrum and milk, then it would be a good idea to make note that those lambs are not retained for the barn.

@@ArreisMorsCI exactly, except she doesn't test for it, so the only thing to do is wait until a ewe is definitely identified as a carrier and then track down that bloodline to gradually winnow it out of the flock.

It’s more air than the milk. If you watch vlog 487 the one that Goat has her babies she explains how it’s spread and she has tested the sheep but with a flock that size it’s hard to determine which ones have it and those that don’t.

Rex and another vet told sandi when Goat passed and they did the autopsy that its exceedinly rare to be transfered from the milk to the lamb especially when they are so young. its more an airborn type thing really for a lamb and its more a concern for them when they are older.

Don’t know why I like seeing the videos when you clean out the pens, find it so interesting. I never respond to scammers. I do report them to you tube but don’t know if it makes a difference. They are like roaches crawling everywhere.

I love the pen cleaning videos! You've activated your Sheepishly Me Army, now the scam bots won't stand a chance! So funny when Kinsey was going nuts while you were loading the ewes, Lucy would get on her to reign her in. That ewe that "blew out" must be carrying 6 or so lambs! The uterine muscle must be intact, or she would die of internal bleeding. Most likely she has herniated her abdominal wall, like Marge and Big Mama.

Hey Sandi...did you ever get your lambing kit restocked? You mentioned it a few weeks ago but you haven't said if you got the stuff. You had preg tox supplies on that list along with the usual lube and gloves and medicine stuff. I do hope you remembered to order it and picked it up!! 💉💊🩹🚛🐑🧑‍🌾

Sandi, it’s interesting that you cautioned about those contests popping up. Weeks ago, I had one reply to my comment and because I’d seen them before, I now put a laugh sticker 😂 as a reply, every time I get one. Thank you so much for the "heads up" on the bots. I have gotten a few of these "you have won" messages. I have not responded to any of them because I always thought if someone was giving something away they would have mentioned the contest in the video. I appreciate your confirming this. I wish the other creates were as forthcoming so no one would get scammed but you're the only one that has. Another reason to love you! Yes, I am naturally skeptical about online "free stuff."
