A lot of Chinese students take English classes sometimes even before elementary school. So he's not wrong in saying that there's probably a lot of people who can speak english really well in China but they are shy. They practice on online platforms and in english classrooms, but when it comes to speaking to foreigners I think they get scared. They don't know how a person will react or if they don't want to be rejected. It makes sense to me.

@@kima6474I wouldn't say it's out of desperation per se. If you have an idea of the dynamics of the society and the intense pressure placed on men to marry, you would know and understand how immensely difficult it is for them to get married. Some men would just like to marry for love but often if not always the girl's parents will not allow them to marry if the man doesn't have a good job, earn a lot of money, hasn't bought an apartment or house and doesn't own a car. With that kind of pressure placed specifically on men in the society, it's no wonder so many are still single into their 30s and even 40s.

Lately, there are a bunch of Chinese people in China looking specifically for foreign women due to high expectations from Chinese woman. Also, with the popularity of mixed couple vloggers on Chinese social media, some see it as a way to finding success on the internet and moving away from their very demanding jobs. And others want to leave China entirely, so see a foreign woman as an opportunity to that. Of course others are for love. So, like with all relationships (regardless of skin colour) people have to be careful.
