This song never hit number 1 on the music charts throughout 1965 but become the number 1 song of the year. This has only happened 4 times in music history and Woolly Bully was the first.

OK! So I'm a white English man in my 70s; when I was in my young teens I used to go dancing on a Saturday afternoon at 'The Orchid Ballroom' in Purley, outside London. They played a lot of Tamla Motown and I loved dancing; even as a kid I was allowed into the inner circle. When they played Wooley Bully for the first time I was in there and swung into it. With the word swing - that's what I did, swinging the shoulders strongly forwards and backwards. Head straight, feet spread and steady, moving the torso forwards and backwards too. It caught on 'cos it worked like reggae. It just so happened that a talent scout from a TV show called 'Ready Steady Go' was there and asked me to introduce the 'dance' to their audience (which was me anyway). I was so precocious that I said yes! My parents, being supportive of their 'artistic' son agreed. Now that; I must say is a strong memory that you just brought back. Thanks. I was brought to you by your reaction to Lou Reed 'Walk on the Wild Side' from just a little bit later in my life. Loving your choices (nostalgia) for me.

When I was in high school in the early eighties some of the surf rock bands hired to play at our dances would play this song along side others like "Louie, Louie" and "Twist & Shout". The more talented bands would also play songs by The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and Dick Dale. Speaking of songs from back then that tell stories, check out Jan & Dean "Dead Man's Curve" or "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)". And if you want to see people dancing to "Wooly Bully", in the 1982 coming-of-age comedy-drama film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, there is a scene at the prom where the surfer character Jeff Spicoli, played by Sean Penn, is hauled along by his buddies to rush the stage to sing after the band hired for the dance launches into "Wooly Bully". So if you want to see people dancing to this song, check out that movie (it's a classic), or check out some of the clips of that scene posted to youtube.

As the story goes.. "Wooly Bully" is a reworking of the 1962 tune "Hully Gully Now" on the Dallas-based Gay Shel label by Big Bo & The Arrows (vocal by Little Smitty), which was based on Junior Parker's "Feelin' Good". The song was given the green light after Sam rewrote the lyrics replacing "Hully Gully" with "Wooly Bully" and few additional lyrical changes. Sam retained the 'watch it, watch it now" refrain from the original version". The Hully Gully was a popular dance back then.

"Sam the Sham" (real name: Domingo Samudio) Born February 28, 1937 (age 85) started out "Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs" in 1961 based on Yul Brynner's portrayal as a pharaoh in the 1956 film 'The Ten Commandants'. In late 1965 after "Woolly Bully" was released, the four musicians left because of financial dispute. "Sam's" manager found new musicians to become the "Pharaohs" and "Sam" along with the new "Pharaohs" had hit with 'Li'l Red Riding Hood' which is also one of my favorites by them. In late 1966 three women joined the band as the "Shamettes". In 1970 "Sam went off on his own to record some solo albums. He left the music business sometime around the mid 80's. I was 9 years old in 1965, and I do remember "Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs" as well as many of the bands and solo artists of the 60's.
