These kinds of "protest songs" were everywhere when I was growing up in the '60s and into the '70s. But the music fit the times - racial tensions, ongoing nuclear weapons testing, war in Vietnam, and of course the military draft. Tense times. This song has brought me to tears many times, but seeing your reaction to it is what did it for me this time. Hard to explain, but seeing two wonderful young people experience it for the first time and really GET IT lifted my spirits beyond words. Still blubbered like a baby,, but in a good way! Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in 1961. They had a lot of great hits such as "Puff, The Magic Dragon", "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In".

A song with profound lyrics and a question for the ages. I've read that Dylan wrote this in 20 minutes in a taxicab. The lyrics are so simple that you might think "I could have written that". But, like Joan Baez once said about Dylan; "We can think it but Bob can say it", or something like that. Great reaction.

Bob Dylan (who wrote this song) is the Shakespeare and social visionary of our times. His extraordinary use of language and thought combined with music is as important now as it was back then. With no reference to anything that sets the song in 1963, Dylan asks us not only "how many times" these things will happen, but more importantly he asks how long can we let this happen. And he leaves the questions of responsibility for us to answer. Dylan never underestimates the intelligence of his audience. All his songs ask the same thing in different ways: what do you think? how does it feel? And they ask us to answer these questions ourselves. In essence, Dylan is always asking, What is it to be human?

It was a powerful song during the Civil Rights Era. They sang it during the 1963 March On Washington when Martin Luther King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. I had just turned 15 and this song meshed with King's message. I took the message to heart, a lot of people didn't. Back then we wanted to fix the problem, these day they want to own the problem. Folk Music played a key role in advancing Civil Rights. Peter, Paul, and Mary bring back those days of hope and optimism.

I was born in 1973, my mum was a teenager in the 60's, so I grew up playing and listening to her records, so although I have listened to this music from that era 100's if not thousands of times, it's only from watching your reactions to them that I get a whole new appreciation from what the lyrics are actually saying. Peter, Paul & Mary, as well as Bob Dylan who wrote and also recorded this song were activists for the causes they wrote and sang about. Peter, Paul and Mary sang at the March on Washington in 1963. Mary died in 2009. Peter, Paul and Bob Dylan are still active in social justice causes today. A beautiful marriage of art and activism. Some of today's artists are speaking up and getting involved. Bob Dylan wrote this Folk Song & a few others, but P P & M brought it to us all in the 60s. As a teen, with school friends, family & neighbors fighting in Nam (some dying), I joined in the Civil Rights movement with it ringing in my ears. When I met Mary Travers after a concert, I thanked her for our loved ones who couldn't & she embraced me. That meant even more to me than her autograph on my program, alone. Listening to my many old P P & M albums now is bittersweet. ☮

Thank you guys for playing Peter Paul and Mary. They were so amazing. Their lyrics were powerful and they had the voices of angels. The song was primarily dealing with the Vietnam War era, but how poignant it is for our days. We hear on the news every day about all the people who have died since Covid began and the number is too overwhelming for our senses to fully take it in. But if you have the courage to look at it just one person at a time, we see our neighbors all around us suffering deep losses. I lost my best friend of 40 years last September. I can't even put into words how much I wish she were still here with us, and how much I wish that no one ever has to needlessly lose someone to this disease. We can't forget our humanity and empathy during these troubled times. I think that is what this song is about.

In 1963 my first grade teacher was right out of college. She was a real folky and played her records for the class. I remember learning this song and many other protest songs.
