There’s something that really doesn’t add up in season 3 episode 7 of the mandalorian. And it's really bugging me. Specifically, regarding the title of the episode. Episode 7 of season 3 is titled The Spies, which isn’t at all world changing, but it does become a bit of a mystery when you look back on the episode. More specifically, who are the spies? Looking back at the episode it not really clear who the spies are?
I mean the closest thing that we got to anything related to spies or spycraft was the opening scene of the episode with Kane reporting to Moff Gideon. But you can hardly name an episode after such a short opening scene, and not to mention, Kane is really the only spy that we know of. And given that the title is The Spies, indicating its plural, Kane is definitely not the focus of the episode. And that’s pretty much it, or at least that appears to be the case. So it really begs the question of who the spies are, were they even featured in the episode or was it really just a badly named episode?
Well looking back at the episode, I think there are three distinct possibilities as to who might be the mystery spy, that being the armorer or the new mandalorian faction, the mandalorian survivors, and someone from Bo Katan’s ranks.
Starting with the armorer, the episode does go a long way in arousing some suspicion regarding her recent behavior. The most obvious case being her timely departure from the rest before they reached the forge. Following their meeting with the mandalorian survivors, we learn that several of the mandalorian survivor’s crew are critically injured. As stated by the armourer herself, they are far too weak to continue the journey with the rest of them. And seemingly under the pretext that they need immediate medical attention, the armourer offers to ferry them back to the mandalorian fleet. And so the timing of this is a little bit suspect, especially since the crew was about to reach the Great Forge. Which hints at the possibility that she knew what was coming up ahead. But besides the timing, there is also a question about why the armorer would choose not to go to the forge despite her talking about it in a previous episode and her primary profession being the blacksmith of the mandalorians. I mean it would make a lot of sense that the armorer would be super eager to go to the great forge since she appears to revere it so much and it is super tied into her role as a mandalorian. And so her decision to just suddenly turn around, not really hesitating to do so, is a little suspect. You’d imagine that someone who revered the great forge would at the very least hesitate to turn around, but the armorer doesn’t seem to go through this. On the contrary she was rather decisive. Another thing to note is actually the fact that the style of Moff Gideon’s helmet seems to match stylistically with that of the armourer. Both Moff Gideon and the armorer’s helmet share the similar characteristic of having these spikes. A characteristic that none of the other mandalorians share in this episode. Also not to mention, much of the episode was spent on scenes with the armorer ferrying the injured mandalorians back to the fleet. Scenes where they could have easily just cut out if it was really the case that the armorer was simply flying back to the fleet with no ulterior motive. And so this definitely creates a lot of suspicion as to whether there is a possible link between Moff Gideon and the Armorer. Certainly there are a lot of fans out there who think so.
However, I am not entirely certain this is the case. The biggest problem with this theory is that what possible motivation could the armorer have for being a spy for Moff Gideon? We know from episodes in the Book of Boba Fett, that the armorer doesn’t like Moff Gideon, in fact we even hear her agree with Paz that justice for Moff Gideon’s crimes would be his death. Not to mention, we’ve spent about 2 seasons worth of time with the armorer establishing her as someone devoted to the mandalorian cause. So her jumping ship would seem rather odd and out of nowhere, especially considering the fact that she was the one who instructed Bo Katan to bring the mandalorians together. A fact which Moff Gideon was unaware of until Kane reported back to him (scene). Which seems unlikely if it were really the case that the armorer was now somehow working for him. Also you have to remember that it was Moff Gideon’s stomtroopers that conducted the massacre on the tribe back in season 1, so I find it hard to believe that the armourer could switch so easily. It really all boils down to what sort of motivation would the armorer even have to be moff gideon’s spy? And not to mention, the title refers to spy in its plural form, so I really don’t think...
