Frenchman here : this case reminded me of a wild and heavily publicized french affair about a guy, Jean-Claude Romand, who pretended for more than 20 years to be a top W.H.O. doctor (he flunked uni irl), Ponzi schemed his relatives to keep his lifestyle afloat ( he reportedly did nothing but sit in parking lots in his car all day), and when he felt cornered, brutally bludgeoned his wife to death and shot his kids with a rifle before setting fire to his house. Something about the loss of "top dog" status insecurity in these family annihilator cases.

It’s cases like this that really make you think: how many people have gotten away with crimes like this, and will most likely never be caught due to their high status? it’s crazy how long this man was able to sweep things under the rug and have law enforcement turn their heads away simply because he was a well respected man who held power within his community. If you haven’t already, I recommend watching the Netflix documentary on this case. It really highlights these power dynamics and how this man and his family were able to use their power as protection for so long.

A lot of people, but I have to really point it that it's so much easier in a place like he was in. There's a reason they keep pointing out that they are in the low country is because it's a very specific area. Obviously you can tell by the desire of the people there to convict him with the help of he SBI and SLED (outside state help) that a lot of people want change but for the entirety of the history of the area it's been controlled carefully by some families. As you can tell by this family being in charge for generations in this one place.

Well people are okay with that. In humanist utilitarianism, it doesn't matter how much suffering and damage life causes, as long as more people claim they profit from being alive, its victims will pile up generation after generation. Until the earth gets swallowed by Sol, that is, and nothing will be left. Life will be all for nothing, except for the history of injustice and pain it brought to the universe.

@@sinisterwombat3128 people are NOT okay with that. Most people reject naïve utilitarianism precisely because it leads to absurd ethical assessments, like harvesting the organs of a healthy innocent person to save 3 people who need organs (yay! Saved 3 people and only killed 1! Yet that is still unacceptable, most people would agree). Most utilitarians nowadays have to also appeal to some form of deontology, or virtue ethics etc. to correct said problems; hence you have stuff like rules utilitarianism where there are still certain rules that can't be crossed, etc.

The body cam footage immediately following the boat crash is available online. Paul was walking around like he could not care less. One of the guys in the boat was even yelling at Paul to stop smiling and stop laughing. He didn’t seem to care at all about loss of life. Pretty disturbing. Seems to run in the family.

Yeah it is strange. I live in the US speficially in baltimore where people get murdered every day and nobody talks about it. A highschool kid was shot and killed outside of a gas station at 7 in the morning a few days ago and the only reason I found out about it was because I passed that same gas station on my way to get groceries around 2pm and the whole thing was police taped off. I watched the 5 o clock news when I got home and they mentioned it for a solid 25 seconds and then moved on to the next story.

@@sethsmith9124 It's crazy that they could even call it that, anyone with a functioning brain could tell it wasn't a hit and run. I'm not an officer, nor a coroner, but I've seen what happens to humans when they're hit and k!lled by vehicles (man vs vehicle) it's a mess, the car is damaged, there's usually broken pieces of car (windshields, lights, sometimes other parts as well, like the bumper, grill, etc) there's usually scuff marks on the ground, including a trail of bl**d depending on how fast the vehicle was travelling and where the individual hit the vehicle and how fast the vehicle stopped, etc (I've seen long trails of bl**d followed by pieces of skin in the gravel, I've also unfortunately seen parts of humans displaced as well, because we do break on impact, say, jawbones with teeth and gums attached, skull fragments with pieces displaced, including a brain matter that's also displaced, sometimes limbs come off, or extremities, (feet still in the shoes but detached from the body, if the shoe is tight enough, or completely removed shoes with the foot moderately to severely damaged, etc) it all depends on how they were hit, the speed, etc. If Stephan was hit hard enough to cause the trauma to his head, he'd have other injuries as well, including marks from the recoiling onto the road and other internal injuries to match, it would be a much more graphic and horrific sight (despite it being horrible enough as is) Also, as others have mentioned, his shoes would have either come off, or limbs likely would have come off as well, no other severe damage to the body makes zero sense. I've seen people who were squished by vehicles, to crossing in a highway, I'm not a professional in any regard, but anyone with eyes and a moderate to low critical thinking skills could tell you, that was not a vehicular caused d**th, not a single fragment of a vehicle was left there, plus, his car being near by is also very telling.

Too bad the case was bunk, and the prosecution proved nothing beyond a reasonable doubt. Scum of the earth or not, our legal system failed with Murdaugh. We don’t prosecute scumbags without actual evidence. The state had none. No actual motive, no timeline of events, no murder weapon, no actual frame of reference for how this really happened. Yes AM was horrible, no doubt, but the legal system was absolutely abused the day the jury was bamboozled into giving a guilty verdict. Idiocy if you believe he did it beyond a reasonable doubt. If you can’t give me coherent facts as to how he did it, you have nothing to stand on.

In the Legal Eagle video they accidentally combined two of the incidents that happened after the murders. The first was with his mothers night nurse, Miss Shelly, who he basically asked to say that he had been at the house for 30-45 minutes instead of 15-20 in exchange for him paying for her wedding or school (she was so freaked out she called her brother who’s a sheriff in another county). The second was Miss Blanca, one of the families housekeepers (the other, Gloria, was the one who died after the “accident”) who helped raise the boys. He asked her to say he was wearing different clothing on the day Maggie and Paul were murdered. Miss Blanca knew that was wrong because she does the laundry. Little things, but just proves how Alex thought he could get away with it by just asking people to lie.

Too bad this case didn’t prove he murdered his family beyond a reasonable doubt. In fact, the state’s own expert’s witnesses testified the extreme likelihood of multiple killers in this scenario. More than likely, the actual killers got off Scott-free because the jury, like all the idiots in this comment thread, bought the media narrative. Way to go folks. 🤦‍♂️

Yet the father is still alive. I just hate hearing stories like this. Where the American justice system allows the murderer to live. That guy should have suffered greatly and lost his life publicly on an electric chair for what he did.

As a SC resident and one of the people who graduated with Buster, this has been an insane case. There’s no end in sight to the other cases and the assets this family is hiding. A legal dynasty fell because of senseless cruel actions. And now the whole SC legal system is being placed under a magnifying glass for the whole nation.

A lot of people say that sociopaths are some of the smartest people in the world. Shit like this forever cements in my mind that they're more often some of the stupidest. For all their manipulative canniness, they'll throw everything away to do something pointlessly cruel because of their inability to comprehend the consequences of their actions.

Good. More states' grandfathered in governmental/legal elites should be placed under scrutiny. The original Buster sounds like a villain out of a movie and he was allowed to thrive and build an empire while probably ordering the executions of at least a handful of innocent men. Alex is simply a demon. Good riddance. SC is better for it.

When the housekeeper's son testified on the stand it was a heartbreaking moment. He looked like a small, meek, nerdy kid whose innocent family got pulled into some evil 💩. Imagine your mom mysteriously dying & for years the guy your family trusted lying to you about the insurance money coming when he already had taken the 4.3 MILLION DOLLAR payment for himself! Just despicable!
