Great story behind the lead guitar here. A 16 year old kid and his parents were on vacation, driving through Mussel Shoals and the kid said stop here! He went into the studio (while they were laying tracks for this song) and asked he could record something with them. Normally, they would have kicked him out, but it was so audacious they said ok. He played the solo and when Segar was sent the demo his band couldn't find a better lick and just left it in for the record.

Seger was (is) from Michigan. I remember back then one of the major Detroit radio stations actually started a sort of fan club (you could get a proper membership card and everything) called DREAD - which stood for Detroit Rockers Engaged in the Abolition of Disco. There is much of the "older" music that appeals to today's young people. I don't begrudge any generation for liking their music just I did when was growing up in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. But recognizing that other music has value as well is simply wonderful and exciting. My praise to you all for doing this and sharing your discovery.

First time I heard it was on a TV show called "ALF" (< Alien Life Form), where Alf performed it funny as hell in the late 80s or early in 90s! It was just like 30 seconds or a minute, but close to the original video! Check out ALFs video and to compare .. I think Tom Cruise did the scene as template for that one in a movie. So ALF was just a parody! Fun to watch! :-)
@TheCkent1003 жыл бұрын
Hi Harri. Bob is very much a rocker. Thus far, you've been pretty much exposed to his mellower hits. His record company preferred to release his ballads as singles, so that is what is usually most requested of reactors. But he's got plenty of rockers and he got a lot of airplay on "album oriented rock (AOR)" radio stations, which are now referred to as "classic rock" radio. Try "Katmandu", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets", "Hollywood Nights", "Feel Like A Number", "The Fire Down Below", "The Horizontal Bop", "Her Strut", "Even Now", "American Storm"...just to name a few of his rockers. And this song was his answer to the disco trend of the late 70's. Needless to say, he wasn't a fan.

Bob's work in the 60s was very funky with psychedelia mixed in. He was influenced by James Brown, Little Richard, old blues, Bill Halley and the Comets, etc. Listen to Lucifer off the album Mongrel from 1970...pure funk. He covered Old Time Rock & Roll, Come to Poppa off of Night Moves, and a few Tom Waits' songs. Most of these never hit the airwaves because his originals were so strong. Check out the jazzy Tom Waits cover New Coat of Paint off of the album Fire Inside.

I have a love/hate relationship with Bob Seger. And that is because Detroit was just a little to the east of where I grew up, just west of Lansing, Michigan. My middle school music teacher, her cousin was Bob Seger's manager, so she got all his sheet music for free. Great songs, Turn the Page, Against the Wind, etc., but, nothing sounds worse than middle schoolers ruining a perfectly good song. Plus most of it was over our heads. Anyway, love Bob Seger to death, but I can still hear the middle schoolers butchering his songs in my head. I was one of the middle schoolers, and I apologize to anyone who had to hear us. Oh, also, fun fact, her name was Miss Seman (sp?), and I didn't know what all the snickering and giggling was about until later on.

I think you're joking when you ask about his comment about the old music being the only good music, and I don't think Bob Seger was saying that there was no more good music at the time. He's saying that some of the other music, in particular Disco, isn't what he wants to hear. I graduated high school in the mid-70s, and to many of us it was a sad thing when Disco started playing in the rock and roll clubs.
