The cruel details of this story is horrific. Including the aftermath, like the kids raised upstairs having guilt and anger issues, Elizabeth having anger towards her mother. I’m sure they had a lot to work through. The way Austria helped this family was beautiful. Unfortunately when the Turpin kids were rescued, we split them up, didn’t give them access to the funds the public raised and they endured physical, emotional and sexual abuse in foster care. Pathetic that a rich nation like ours can’t help the most vulnerable.

I recall hearing this story previously many years ago. That man is truly the worst humanity has to offer. His actions were despicable, and I hope his parole is denied. There have been mass murdering dictators that I'm sure would disapprove of that man.

I remember this case, it was freaking scary. I was in shock, I couldn't believe someone that evil could exist. I barely finished watching the video, I couldn't because I was bawling my eyes out. It still makes me sick. On top of that, Josef even admitted he kept his sick mother locked in attic until she died just to punish her for abuse he suffered. Luckily, Elisabeth and the kids are okay now, they got therapy.

I don't know about Austria, but it may be like Germany, having done away with the death sentence. I met a man who was a prison guard in Germany, who spoke or this. I asked him if it was in reaction to Hitler's holocaust, he nodded and said," yes". (My grandparents were all born there, and this man was visiting in the US.) As far as this sort of thing goes, we had a case here in Cleveland. A man named Castro had kidnapped 3 girls over a few years, and kept them imprisoned in his house, also impregnating them. Not in a dungeon, but locked up behind boarded windows,.He had them in fear, lied to them that their parents had stopped looking for them. I can't remember all the details, but one day one of them managed to get outside, and a neighbor man heard her cry for help, and summoned the police. She told him who she was, and he knew exactly who she was, because their families had NEVER given up looking for them. Castro committed suicide in prison. One of the girls still does a "missing persons"report for a local TV station.

I think parole is a formality they have to give everybody. He maybe eligible, but he may never get it. At least I hope not. The movie Shawshank Redemption shows a good example of this. The members of the Manson family and other high profile murderers have been up for parole numerous time but are still in prison or died in prison.

Being eligible for parole isn't the same as being granted parole. Release is still up to the parole board. That board will take a lot into consideration like: victim statements; risk of re-offense; offenders participation in treatment; behavior in prison; and numerous other factors. Let's hope other countries have similar safeguards?

Yeah... unfortunately, the justice systems in Europe are quite different. They don't sentence people for actual life sentences, even for murder. And they certainly don't have the death penalty. My hubby is a native of Denmark. When I found this information out, I couldn't believe or understand it!
