If he just remains honest and respectful, the likelihood they try to be lenient (whatever that means in this case) is a lot higher. The only times you stay silent is when the charges are up for debate, so it's best to not incriminate yourself. Obviously, this doesn't guarantee anything going in his favor because he still committed the crime, but if you're this caught, might as well just be honest and respectful about it because the judge or whatever will take that into account.

At least most people think like this and while it is selfish, would you just admit stuff and spend years in jail instead if there was even a 20% chance that your time would be cut in half or you'd be let free as there isn't enough evidence.
