Complete isolation for me would be a bit over 3 months in the Carpathian Mountains, beautiful place. Forgot to speak a bit when I went back, words where a bit harder to pronounce and sometimes I would have to take a 1 sec brake or so to remember how to pronounce more unusual words. I got back to normal fast do, less then a week. I am a talker, if the Hound would be around me he would die from a ruptured stomach(if we also had chicken to spare of course).

There’s a huge difference between being isolated in a prison cell where you can’t leave and have very little - if anything - to do, and willingly isolating yourself outdoors in a cave or something. I’m sure both have their bad effects but prison is much much worse.

I'm a criminal justice major, and extended periods of solitary confinement are definitely something we should do away with. If someone is too dangerous to be in the general prison population, they should be kept separated from the rest of the inmates physically, but they need some type of human interaction to keep them from going insane.

But isolation in prison is completely different from spiritual isolation. Not only is spiritual isolation a choice, it is also less...well, isolated. If your in a Forest, there is still visual stimulation. You are not only starting Into darkness, or into a white wall. There are trees, and you are surrounded by nature. Being isolated in prison is honestly worse then just serving regular time. I get that sometimes, it seems like the criminal deserves it, but I isolation will make them more mentally unstable.
@sergioaparicio8366 жыл бұрын
Thats exactly what I thought. The main problem is not the lack of human contact, but the lack of stimuli, as in the case of the prisoner.

And yes, prisons are not a place to reinsert people, but a hell of torture, both psychological and mental, which in my opinion is cruel.
@Jac0bIAm6 жыл бұрын
Not only does the spiritual seeker desire the isolation, but he is often well prepared for it mentally and physically after countless hours of meditation and introspection in a non-isolated environment. Throwing a criminal with already severe psychological problems into solitary and total isolation is totally different than throwing a monk, seasoned meditator, or anyone with a quiet mind and deep inner peace into such isolation.

I think I could tank it... IF... I was allowed to write a book or something. The trick is keeping your mind occupied with something that isn't right there right now. You can deprive yourself of sensory input if you can reflect inward and create fictional sensory input to substitute it. The real problem would probably come later on when I start getting paranoid that I'm actually not alone and there is actually someone else trapped in here with me but I don't know where they are. Depriving yourself of petty fears will cause the mind to invent them where none exist, and there is little you can do about that.

The thought "What if I didn't exist?" is a very human one. It doesn't mean you don't see value in life. It is just apart of the human condition to wonder if we had never existed. Also the internet is a great place for people who are depressed to find comfort by occupying their mind. Most people Ive heard say "I never would kill myself it's fucking stupid who would want to die." Also have a comfortable life, were raised by two parents who loved them, or are raging alcoholics/sex addicts/pot heads. Nothing wrong with substance use but it is escapism. Go live poor in a slum in India with a guy made out of your shit and I bet we would be watching you swing from a noose in 6 months.

I partially agree with you, however, you still need to be physically prepared as well. Your body is not made to sit in isolation for long periods of time. Your muscles become weaker, the heart has to work harder, and overall your body is exhausted trying to stay alert. It just wears you down. Personally, I would not survive very long in isolation and need sensory stimulation.

This is true, but is much easier said than done. Even a seasoned meditator would have difficulties with being in solitary confinement for years, not to mention decades. You can try it out for yourself in a non-prison environment and see how long you can fare.

It depends on what you’re doing in isolation. I spent many years of my life writing And recording music and didn’t care much at all about being isolated. I was in my Mid 50s.....when I cared at all about not being so isolated, but I still live my life Like that. It’s the only life I know.

Now the question really is, do you have a pc? Do you have a TV? Do you game games to play? Do you have a kitchen to make food at? Do you have a pet? Do you have the ability to walk to another room? Do you have the ability to tell time? Do you have the possibility to walk outside if you wanted to? If any of the answers are "yes", then it wasn't isolation on the same level as described in the video. End of story. Being alone at home isn't like being closed off from other people. The thing is, being "isolated" as in the video, isn't about being alone, it's about having "social" limitations. You have the ability to just open the pc and send a text to your buddy, and bam, you're now social. The brain is stimulated by social interactions, whether or not that is through the pc, the tv or at a café.

I stayed in my room 23 hours a day for 2 years, rarely leaving the house because I had some extream social anxity and didn't need to go to school. It wasn't true isolation as I talked to my parents now and then (few minutes when I left my room) and I don't think I went insane. I still can't talk right though (4 years later), I always stumble around my words and stuff. lol

In my opinion, the lack of human contact is not the problem, but the lack of stimuli. In the example of the prisoner we see how he really goes crazy, but the Buddhist, even in the absence of human contact has different stimuli such as survival.

Not everyone is social. You can be “isolated” for years without going go crazy. For instance you could live in the mountains and be fine. It depends if you can actually do things. And not everyone craves social ness either,
@redacted35576 жыл бұрын
pecu alex yeah. Anyone can adjust to that, but complete lack of senses isn’t natural, which is why people go “crazy”.
@yaboioof32296 жыл бұрын
Everyone is social. You're incorrect. Solitary confinement provides no true social interaction or anything similar whatsoever. Living alone in the mountains you here weather and hear and see other living creatures daily no matter what. Your mind is stimulated by social interactions around you constantly
@redacted35576 жыл бұрын
YaBoiOof not really. Yes everyone is “made” to be social but you can simply override this by not speaking. It isn’t hard to grasp this idea. And when I refer to everyone not being social I’m not talking about total isolation. There’s a difference between antisocialness and complete isolation.

I have lived 14 years in near complete isolation due to an illness that is called avoidant personality disorder. I have not had 1 friend, girlfriend or even someone to talk to over all these years with a few exceptions, I have at times attended therapy but to no avail , the personality disorder is to integrated in my pathology. Anyone; I'm still far from crazy or deranged. I still have solid cognitive capacity and a pragmatic and logical worldview. I'm still able to reflect and reason, I have never experienced a psychotic episode and I'm rarely depressed. I might be sexually frustrated by that isnt enough to qualify as "crazy".

Of course, humans is social animals. I get some socialization online. But still, online interaction is not the same as a friendship where you can actually meet them and have a laugh together or do fun stuff like travelling, going to the beach, playing sports and whatnot. That's things I sorely miss but I dont miss it so much that it drives me crazy. But I suppose we humans have different tolerance levels, some might snap and develop severe mental disorders in just a year of living like me.

While under a strict no human contact order, not even seeing or speaking to guards, he lived with the florescent lights always on and had televangelist shows played 24/7. Also, he was given literally nothing to help pass the time, either, no reading or drawing materials, playing cards or anything extra. I am not passing judgment either way about his case, just that I think it is apropos to the video.

I don't know if it was the same guy, but I read about a guy who did about the long. He was involved with the Black Panthers and got like ten years in prison for shoplifting. While in there he was accused of attacking guards multiple times and also other prisoners during riots (when it is hard to know who did what.) He did that huge amount of time in solitary confinement, then was let out into the general population. But they knew that there were guards, white supremacists, and other black guys that hated him, so within a year he got killed. Anyway, that is one example. But sometimes it is total BS. One guy did a long time in solitary and then that time was extended because he had a book by a political activist who escaped from prison. But that book had been authorized for him to have. Anyway, you can only put somebody in solitary for stuff they did while already in prison. You can't be sentenced to it for what you did outside.

@MlokLik6 жыл бұрын
no, i mean.. just no. death penalty is a fair penalty if the guy has raped someone or killed someone. (it also helps clear space for jails) if it's painless and quick, i don't see the problem here, other than an incurable demon being removed from the earth, so that he cannot commit another atrocity. how do you call that torture? i call it justice. but for stealing and robbing? yeah, leave the guy in jail for 1 year or 3, he'll learn and never do it again, therefore i dont see why would you kill him.
@MlokLik6 жыл бұрын
now, if a guy killed or raped me, i wouldn't want him to be in a regular jail so that he could chat about me and brag to his friends about how he killed or raped me; no. i would want him to be completely isolated from the rest of the fucking world, the only thing he could see should be a fucking black screen. is it inhumane? i don't care, honestly. but the guy killed or raped(or both..) someone, so thats inhumane in the first place.
@AbstractTraitorHero6 жыл бұрын
Luved What you want is irrelevant. Because according to the constitution. According to the Un becoming a criminal does not strip you of the right to avoiding cruel and unusual punishment. The death penalty is fucked in this country. People suffer enormously and 4% of all people on death row are innocent. Innocent people are executed and my tax dollars go to that. I am complicit in murder of an innocent person because of the death penalty inevitably. Combined with the agony that they might feel. Plus the fact it violates the constitution and the Un? Fuck the death penalty.

Jub lob right? People like to pretend that they don't need social validation but it's human nature..

Stop pretending you're some antisocial lunatic, without social media and friends you'll probably end yourself.

doesn’t matter what you believe, science has already decided the matter , the size of the brain ( neuron connections ) in every animal is in a direction correlation with the size of social group that the animal belongs to . We have grown bigger brains because we needed bigger brains to gossip and to keep track of social interactions.

Ehhhhhh... I've got Asperger's, and I don't really think it affects _this_ per se

My best friend says that she has Aspergers, and low functioning autism, but shes funny and smart... What does Aspergers even do?
@de05096 жыл бұрын
@Shillelagh Pretty weird though. Because Aspergers is supposed to mean high functioning (close enough to normal people and can be independant), while low functioning means less able to function. So aspergers + low functioning does raise some questions. So initially its said that the man who studied some high functioning autistic kids wanted to save the kids from being euthanised by the nazis so he says these people although quirky in some ways has a chance to have higher of certain abilities (savant syndrome). So imagine a person who maybe can read a book and memorize it all word by word, but cant wipe his own ass after shitting. Something like that. He says this to make the nazis feel a bit interested to let these autistic children live. (because the nazis somehow believed in eugenics, which is kinda fucked up) So today Aspergers are not considered a class anymore and its all lumped into one whole group called autism but has varying degrees of how far they are from normal people (high functioning, or low functioning, but using numbers to describe the severity)

You can't have Asperger's and be low functioning, she might be referring to in comparison to neurotypicals. It's like a milder version of common Autism. Can cause things like difficulty making eye contact, being overly literal, or the universal Autism symptom; having one or a few specific interests that they'd obsess over or at least take an unnatural amount of interest in. Asperger's is in the high-functioning end of the spectrum, but in comparison to the average person, it's lower functioning. Actually, people with high-functioning Autism tend to be really smart, but have difficulty applying it to things. For example, I have grades so bad it's scary, but my IQ is 137
