This brought back so many memoires for me. Those old forest service roads are what I learned to ride on back in the early 1970's. It was those kind of places that I took my departed wife before we where married. She had never ridden a motorcycle before and half way to the destination she was so mad at me she took off her helmet and slammed it into my stomach as hard as she could. I managed to talk her into continuing on and when we got to the place I wanted to show her she was so happy that she was in tears of joy. I think that is what sealed our relationship. She died of cancer in 2011. She loved the forests and the trees they where her spiritual happy place.

I grew up in Vermont USA. I had relatives in Boston. Vermont and New Hampshire.sit side by side with only the Connecticut river, not too big, separating them. The trip from my town to Boston passes through about an equal distance in Vermont and New Hampshire. Even in grade school, I marveled at the difference in land use by the people in Vermont compared to the land use by the people in New Hampshire. In Vermont, over centuries the forests of the hills were freckled with pastures and farms and homesteads cleared, built,.and in the cycles of time often abandoned. Yet the Connecticut River was like some mystical barrier from the Twilight Zone. When passing through it and entering New Hampshire, the forests of the hills were mostly pristine and uncut surrounding the small villages that were comfortable and well presented. Throughout these same few centuries, the local people appeared to prefer keeping their activity close to the village square. As I contemplated this, my thoughts were that most of Vermont was settled by the Catholic French and English who came down from Quebec and like to move out and cut a piece of their own land while the people of New Hampshire were the Puritans from Boston who liked to keep their activity near their village. Three of my grandparents were born in Quebec near the Richelieu River. The ancestors of my fourth grandparent arrived on the Mayflower. (That was, of course, after the most tolerant Dutch finally could no longer endure the tribulations of the Puritans and forced them to return to their mother country of England. The English promptly suggested they find a new home in the new lands across the great Atlantic. And this is what they did on the Mayflower. I could go on with a more extended history, but it is a troublesome tale.) I tell this tale because it might reflect on the difference you are finding in places in the US where the back roads are fairly used from places where the back roads get used very little.

This adventure reminds me of a short story by Mark Twain. In it, he told the story of a train that stopped in front of a canyon. The bridge was gone. The passengers had to dismantle the train, piece by piece, and carry it to the other side of the ravine to reassemble it. All this in a few months (if I remember correctly). Fortunately, Noraly did not have to disassemble the bike. Bravo Noraly and thank you Roger.

I think that Noralee is actually single handedly changing the worlds perception of the variety in the environment that is available across the U.S.A. as many think it is just one city after the other. They really have not realized that even with the country's population that there are still tons of rural and forested lands available to explore and enjoy.

The majority of America is land but this world with social media and technology is so disconnected from reality. I say the same about California, when most people think about CA, they think of the coast and Los Angeles and San Francisco but in reality, CA is mostly land and CA has the most national parks in the entire country.

Wow. Every ride is an amazing adventure. Some marvel at the technical challenges, others at the route planning. For me, the biggest challenge is wrapping my head around life on the road. Continuously. For months and months. Alone. Adapting to that would be impossible for me. I'm grateful that you're sharing your experience Noraly. An experience that seems to exist more in a fantasy than any sort of reality I'm familiar with. Bravo!

Instead of the third person, "Noraly, we love you, please be careful, above all ignore any hateful comments, you're a wise person and probably understand some people have issues that make them take out their hatefulness on others. When you had breakfast in Elk River the cafe was originally “Morris Drug” store. When my father was a young kid on his way to school he used to stop at Morris Drug Store to build the fire in the furnace. When you went through Bovill, the Elk Saloon used to be the town Bank. The new owners of the saloon converted the huge safe into a refrigerator to keep the beer cold. It is the only local weekend night spot in that area. Happy trails Noraly, another great video…..

When I heard "forest service", I remember they try to make all roads 'thru ways' somewhere - always two entrances/exits. Logging roads are the opposite and I watch out for a lot of tree stumps OR tied-off bandana markers. I hadn't thought about "county" but with forest service being degraded several years ago, I can see how even county access would be better.

The distances are large and the population relatively small. It is too expensive to justify paving a whole lot of them. Mostly interstate freeways and highways are paved. So you can certainly get to most places on paved roads, but there are lots of dirt roads to fill in all the places between. She doesn't show many of the road miles, but there are plenty.
