Earthiness - The two African-Americans that were killed were at a civil rights demonstration, were not related to him and he did not know personally. He just didn’t like the way the police handled the situation at the demonstration. No, they should not have been killed. However, I don’t know all that happened at the civil rights demonstration, and can’t speak to whether the two who were killed did something that put themselves in the situation that caused them to be shot at. He shot and injured and/or killed people who didn’t have anything to do with the police shooting at the demonstration. He also, among other police, shot a ‘fellow’ African-American. Thought he was only after white people. And, he also deprived a lot of friends and families of the lives of their loved ones that he killed. And, those he injured were probably never the same... physically or mentally. Had they not shot him, and killed him... he may have killed many more. There is a saying that, ‘the needs of the many outweigh the needs, of the few, or the one.’ Yes, I believe that the lives of many more were at stake, and am glad that they were able to stop him. They would have taken him to jail... IF he had stopped shooting at people, and thrown the gun away. He didn’t do either, and suffered the consequences of his own actions.

I agree this would be a great movie but now it would be garbage. They would make him transgender or some shit. They would have the scumbag being his gay lover and frame it as if it was about him fighting the system over their forbidden love affair. Not to mention the sacrifice "she" made in order to introduce the don't ask don't tell policy. There modern movie pitch written in five minutes, and I'm pretty sure I checked most of the boxes. And if you don't like it you are all racist homophobes!

Thank you for sharing. I met Chuck Pitman at a bar outside Fort Worth, TX in 2005. He really liked his beer and flirting with the ladies. Being a Marine Office myself and stationed in New Orleans, he personally told me the whole story over about 5-6 beers. Your version sounds pretty accurate. A couple interesting facts that you didn’t mention were: He attended a meeting with the Coast Guard and the New Orleans Police. The police first asked the Coast Guard to help and they said “no way”. Then they asked Chuck if he could fly one of his “armored” helicopters to help. He said he chuckled to himself because his helicopters are not at all armored. The other thing he told me that was interesting was that it was very foggy and he had to fly slow and low, along the contour of Mississippi River from the base in Belle Chasse to downtown New Orleans, He said he was worried about hitting the massive bridge that crosses the river near downtown New Orleans. I think he said he flew underneath it. The couple things I would change in your story are: Remove the word “stole” in your title headline. He did not steal a helicopter. He was the Squadron Commander which means it was assigned to him therefore he was authorized to use it. Obviously he wasn’t authorized to use it for that purpose. I also wouldn’t use the word “commandeer”. Commandeer means the helicopter did not belong to him. Since, more lives were at stake, it seems he thought it was better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. And he would have never received permission if he had asked. The guy was a true hero. Too bad there aren’t many today who would do that.
