3:10 That is not an app, since it is musically not on a strong beat but a pickup to the anticipation of the note of the next bar.

It's always a plus if you can hit a note not in the chord or scale of the song and make it work.

This also applies for instrumentation! A good song is full of non chord notes and their resolution. And really, thats one of the biggest hurdles for beginners singing and composing only on the chord notes

Always great tips! Thanks for sharing! You could combine this tension trick with another one you've posted before, having a big jump up to your chorus, using a big attention grabbing tricks with your non-chord tone

Cheers Nick. yep, the only limit is our imagination. Appoggiatura essentially delays resolution. You could extend that idea throughout the whole song.👍

excellent material!!!, I saw you are using hooktheory tabs to analize the songs, there is a way in hooktheoryto make the tab showing the chord notes, so, your explanation could be better undesrstood and easily to grasp.

love your stuff man! have been a fan ever since you started your channel. i have a request though. i know rap isn't your preferred genre to study but, could you get into some techniques or patterns you notice in some popular and critically acclaimed records like "To Pimp a Butterfly" by Kendrick Lamar? i've been trying to do that myself and i'd love to see what you think?

Great video, but I just wonder did the Beatles consciously employ these techniques or did they naturally just give birth to them?
@SongWritersChopShop7 ай бұрын
Cheers David, really appreciate it. No, The Beatles definitely didn't give birth to appoggiaturas. They probably weren't conscious of it but the classical melodies they grew up on would have had apps by the bucket load. 👍
@TylerCurrey-ui2vk25 күн бұрын
The irony in taking out the expression in "appoggiatura" by not using the name and refering to it as "app"... Only constructive criticism btw, yu mispelled appoggiatura but i think the "C" was a simple editor mistake. Great video.

Hi Theresa, I'd be happy to help but I'm not clear on what you're asking. Could you be more specific? What do you do in regards to what exactly?🤔
@tessy_theartist Жыл бұрын
@@SongWritersChopShop okay, I watched a couple of your videos. And I can't seem to understand what you're saying in practical terms, yeah sure you're using other songs as examples, but where does the application come in? How do I use it to write songs? Everything feels like theory to me, like I'm listening to an audio book. But when I take out my pen to write I have no clue what to do or where to start or how to apply what I have learned. Also there are so many terms used that I don't know the meaning of, which makes it harder to understand. Also the app you use, I don't know or understand how to use it. I guess what I'm saying is, asides using other songs as an example, could you apply your lessons on the spot with an original song? Then apply those theories and tricks you teach so we can see how it works in real time. Especially the rhythm video, the "Dum, da" thing that one I don't understand what it is or how to apply it at all. What is "Dum Da"? And how do I apply those different types of rhythm?, I don't even know how to detect in a song what kind of lyrical rhythm is being used. I hope I'm not giving you any trouble and I really hope you understand me 🙏🏾, I'm just so confused on what they are, how they work and how to use them. Please help 🙏🏾
