I read a tech support story about an old man who kept bringing his PC into a shop because it wouldn't start, but every time they tested it at the shop, it started up no problem. It wasn't until the tech went to the guy's house and found out he was plugging in a USB floppy drive that he was using for an archival project before he turned it on that they figured out the problem. Windows prioritizes booting from floppy drives over anything else since that was common in the old days, quick change to some bios settings and he was good to go. Lesson is, if someone says they're having weird tech issues, believe them, especially with old tech. Even knowing that though, I don't think I would have suspected the memory card messing with the controller.

I actually had the reverse problem. I made a pair of arcade sticks using the MC Cthulhu board (an unfortunately abandoned and closed source project). What I discovered is that while it works fine on PS2, it drives one of the output signals constantly which means on a PS1 it will prevent the memory cards from working. Not the other controller port, oddly, just the memory cards. On PS2, all four ports are electrically independent from each other rather than on the same bus, so there isn't a possibility of that kind of bus lockup happening. I fixed it by putting a diode on one of the signals in the PlayStation cable.
@renakunisaki16 сағат бұрын
I had a weird glitch with a rental Nintendo 64. Every so often, the games would just freeze, but the music was still going. It seemed completely random, but eventually when it happened I got frustrated, accidentally pulled on the controller cable, and the game unfroze! It turns out, that particular controller had bad wiring, and if you pulled on it just right, one of the power lines would short against the data line. That would confuse the game into thinking the controller was just taking a while to respond, so it would sit there and wait... and wait... and wait until you managed to jiggle it back to remove the short. Another (or maybe the same?) controller had the analog stick able to move slightly further than official ones, meaning for example if you pressed it all the way up Mario would run a tiny bit faster than he would with a normal controller. But some games actually accounted for this limit and scaled up the input... and when used with this controller, that scaling caused an overflow. So playing Zelda, if you pushed the stick all the way forward, occasionally it thought you were actually pressing backward instead, because the scaled input was out of range!

We were warned about this in Acts of Gord, Book of Wrath, Chapter 3. 🙏 Go now, and read of The Gord, and know that he has walked the path of the Game Store Owner, and that he has suffered for all of us.

In case you're confused, no, Acts of Gord are not real stories, they're made up but are incredible.

euro cases on ps1 games always look weird to me as an American lol cool and i think something like this happend to me sometime around late 1999 - early 2000 and i think it perm broke the ps1 as even after it was removed the controllers never worked lucky i got the ps1 from gamestop and i had a warranty

@@thegodgen Yeah, but hey, they’re not that different. PS2 games, those I like quite a bit better over in the States.

US cases on ps1 games always looks weird to me as a gamer from Europe lol... I mean you had the bathroom equipment SNES, a Mega Drive with a biblical name and a Dreamcast swirl of orange/red!
