When I purchased my home in 2007 the AC unit was 20 years old and just about done. I purchased both units on line and found an AC guy working in a new subdivision. The 3.5 ton system cost me $2000. The tech charged me $900 to install it. The quotes I was getting for a new system was from 7k to 15k. That system just went out. I replaced it with diy mini splits. My summer power bill went from 200-300 to $60.

I just had a 2.5 ton 14 seer A.C. and evap. coil plus an 80 percent 80000 BTU gas furnace installed plus they had to do some duct work and install a condensate pump and remove that old beast of a furnace from the basement. That old furnace was install in 1965 and still worked good. I never had central air before so they also had to run a 40 ft. line set. Got it installed for 6500 dollars total from a small local contractor. They did a great job and the system works great. Do your home work on these contractors before you hire one.

Thanks. I appreciate your advice. I did my own heat pump mini-split install. I didn't want to buy a vacuum pump to purge, etc so I called a couple of contractors just to purge and charge the system. They both said "no" - they were concerned that if there was a problem with the system I would blame them and they don't purge/charge systems they hadn't installed. I did it myself but I understand why they refused.

I purchased a system from HVAC direct last year. Top of the line gmvm furnace and 14 seer AC which comes up to 15 with TXV installed. Put it in, used staybrite 8, got some help from HVAC tech friend as I needed it about 20 oz of 410a added. Very easy install other than the fact that I had to remove finished ceiling for PVC venting. All in, including tools I bought that I gave to HVAC tech friend was $5200. I actually downsized. System works great. Highly recommend diy if you have that bent.

Good advice as a former HVAC contractor. Different areas of the US have different SEER rating requirements, and they are all changing. Just be careful not to get equipment with too low of SEER ratings in your area because if you get a permit, they will not allow it. Changing laws: The US Department of Energy (DOE) sets minimum efficiency standards for HVAC systems. In 2023, the minimum SEER ratings for central air conditioners increased to 14 SEER (13.4 SEER2) in the northern U.S. and 15 SEER (14.3 SEER2) in the southern U.S.

Oh, the HVAC industry is one of the most corrupt around. They do some really horrible things, not just to customers, but to each other. A local place that spends a lot on advertising, so they get a lot of praise in the media, they fire call centers to overwhelm new competitors by requesting quotes and just waste their time. The thing that really burns me... I recently learned that the refrigerants are only regulated by the EPA when they're used as refrigerants! If you use them as a propellant, the EPA doesn't get involved. And my propellant... I mean using it in a can and you're literally spraying it into the air! How can they claim any legitimacy with their regulation when you can literally spray it into the air??? It is just part of the gatekeeping the industry uses to keep people out by making the burden of entry high. For an example of propellants, security folks will use it for their tests to look for laser sensors and to open motion controlled doors from the outside. They just spray some into the path between the door opening with the thing straw.

Ductless system is at least 50% more efficient at cooling then a ducted system. I never believed it until I put a 12k BTU in my garage even setting it to 82F it feels cooler in there then it does in my house which has a 4 ton Goodman ducted system set to 74F. I believe the reason is the head unit is right in the room it can pull heat from the ceiling and quickly cool down the garage faster then a ducted system. The garage unit pulls 2.23 amps at 240V while it's 113F outside. My 4 Ton Goodman pulling 20 amps at 240V.

great video, my transformer has a blue and yellow wire on the low voltage side. the blue has 24v but yellow has no voltage. My unit works fine as far as I know. does that mean I need a new transformer? I have no control board.

Actually, if clean your material well and stay brite is great. The numbers have been crunched for a long time now. Less failure leaks over time. Common failure is found within couple inches of acetylene oxygen brazed joints. Not at the joint, but the now hardened copper on both sides of joint have cracks from dogs, lawn guys, clumsy HVAC techs bumping and tripping over line sets. Less, if any copper oxide created inside to clog filters or expansion valves and shorted out compressors

why is the HVAC field so secretive? is it because it's actually really simple and easy work and they want people to think its this huge ordeal that costs crazy amounts. which IMO is why the HVAC field is failing. people are buying those portables and window units when their house unit dies because a window unit is cheaper than a service call to find out what is wrong before even fixing anything. only for them to try selling you a $6,000 unit because your $12 relay went bad. and since the demand is so low now, employees in the HVAC field can not make more than $20/hr. cashiers get $16/hr. but also since the demand is so low and the company still needs x amount of dollars a year to sustain the business. if that is $100,000 then they need to install 33 units. if they can only sell 20 units, each unit price has to go up 1/3. PLEASE do tell me if i'm wrong on anything, also this is NWPA / NEOH.

He has a video how to pump down the refrigerant using your condenser, essentially confining it inside the compressor. You can get R410A units cheaper now, R32 and R454B are going to be more expensive. You can also get a tank of 25lbs R410A refrigerant online for 250-350$.

Hey there. I too enjoy your channel and content. I am considering replacing my Goodman 13 SEER HVAC system myself. Here in Vegas many of our systems (mine too) are in the attic and are as such horizontal systems. I want to replace the A/C and heating (SEER rating 8!), but don't see any content for an attic install. I would be interested to see any unique challenges, such as drip pan and hanging the system from the joists that you can share. Would appreciate any thots you may have on the subject and even a quick video like today's would be appreciated. P.S. Another rip off item is scraping the flame sensor in heating systems. A little insight on that too would be appreciated!

I say replace your AC only if it needs to be replaced. R22 and and 410a is way better than the new refrigerant coming out. Your house has more leaks than the Iraqi Navy. Seal it and add more attic insulation. Have the ducts cleans and sealed. Every New appliance is designed to break down after 5 years. You'll be amazed in the first 5 years of your purchase but after that start saving for new. Keep IT Simple Silly.

What are your thoughts on backup heat options that are less common? I have really wanted to look at a pellet furnace that could be integrated with my heat pump. Right now, I still have the gas furnace that was installed with my old air conditioner before I replaced it with a heat pump. I am glad to have the heat pump and it has been most of my heating this past winter, but we had several days of -15F weather that I relied on my gas heat for because my thermostat (Ecobee Premium) doesn't allow to lower the temperature when aux heat will be used to less than -5F. I've installed a heat pump water heater and only have my stovetop (oven has always been electric) and my gas fireplace, besides the furnace. So, I would like to switch to propane (I can't get a large propane tank installed) for the stove and fireplace, and then have some other reliable system for heating, like pellets or other biomass, so I can end my gas service. I spend $30/mo just to have it turned on even if I am not using it. Getting two 60lb. propane tanks filled annually will cost me about $80... and I think I could even make some of my own pellets with much of the waste we have in the house, like coffee grounds... or I can just affordably acquire them.

Wouldn't worry too much about it, but a can of rx flush is cheap insurance. If your outdoor unit is installed higher than your indoor unit you'll need to take more care because more oil is likely in places it doesn't belong. Yep. If all the gas is out, slight chance the compressor is burnt out. Then yes new system is needed. Newer gas works on different pressure than what the existing equipment installed can't use new gas with old.

Good video.. here's real world analysis. There was a time when we would not install equipment provided by a customer..any good contractors are busy and they make their margin. No need to make less. ..let's say a 2 ton system has a total job cost of $4900. You already found a fair quality contractor who is happy at 2x cost.. He bid you at 9k and you want less? You can buy it yourself and save a bit but here's the math... After cost WE walk with 4500.. your price is about $5100 because not all of the cost was equipment.. add in your equipment cost your not super far from the guys bid.. Also keep in mind you bought it you warranty it.. meaning you order, pay , file the paperwork and track your credit on your end. Needs to be processed through the online company YOU bought it from.. so much for a quick repair😂.. So YES, you might save doing this but is it worth it? Also these numbers pricing structures are all over the place depending on which area of the country you're in so try to get the big picture.. there will always be people who will install a system for 1500 bucks but a good contractor who will be there for you on Saturday or a holiday good times and bad times will not do this for less than his original take..

OK people be careful about buying equipment online. I love the title to this guys video because he’s probably gonna hate me when I tell you the truth. I’ve done this for a long time. I could’ve saved a lot of money. When I install a unit for somebody by buying online I’ve never done it and here’s one of the key reasons why. Warranties on the equipment. They will tell you that you have a warranty and yes technically you do. But if it’s July and your compressor goes out and you have to have somebody remove that compressor that knows what you’re doing ship it to Florida where a lot of people are buying their stuff from and you have to go a month without air. Assuming they approve the part and send you a new one. How is that going to save you any money, sometimes you may be able to get a local distributor to warranty a part for you, but you’re gonna have to pay them to do it assuming you can get them to do it. people, for goodness sake‘s just get a license contractor to do it check prices and get the best price check on the warranties through that individual make sure that they’re going to stand behind the equipment. Make sure that you have at least a 10 year warranty on all the parts you should, then if you have an issue let them deal with it. This guy doing this video is probably gonna block me when he sees what I said but hey, I’m just telling you the truth he’s making money off KZbin. That’s what he’s concerned about.

Beware of people my buddy purchased his own unit out of Florida from budget air. I believe it was. I tried to register that unit for him as I’ve done 1 million times and I never was able to do it. There was some kind of a glitch somewhere. It never would go through. I have no issue with this little guy talking people through changing a capacitor or a blower motor or something like that but I have a big issue with him trying to put companies out of business that’s not cool brother. You can make a living without stabbing people in the back just to get KZbin money. And giving people bad advice that’s probably going to get him in trouble down the road. I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes. That’s not fun when you thought I thought you saved some money only to have to give it away a year later, because of aissue that you can’t fix that you’re gonna have to pay somebody else to do while you’re units out of commission for a while.

If HVAC contractors wouldn't pad their profit margins to such a ridiculous level people wouldn't be bothered to try and do it themselves as much. The costs of equipment has gone up, however, not to the level where what use to cost $3-5k a few years ago, now costs $10-12k. I couldn't understand what you wrote about warranty and shipment but, typically, manufacturer does not care how the system was purchased and more concerned how it was installed (by "licensed" contractor or not) and inspected annually (for warranty); parts availability or being shipped by manufacturer in advance after testing differs from company to company, but with the savings people get warranty is a moot point anyway.

Now stop and think for a second where is the manufacture. You’re a local distributor doesn’t have to stand behind that piece of equipment regardless of what somebody might try to tell you. What they normally do if they decide to do that is charge you a substantial fee to do so and when you’re doing a compressor, you better know what you’re doing by the way, not just anybody can do that. A motor relay whatever sure there’s plenty of videos on here that will tell you how to do that. I wish this little guy doing these DIY videos giving out scary advice would do a video on warranties and how warranties work with online purchases as opposed to a local purchased through a contractor which by the way, another thing you’re going to run into you’re gonna probably have to have a EP a card for some of the purchases just depends on what you’re buying.
