@shaunah.1165 Жыл бұрын
The entire time I had a fat tailed African gecko I never had to help her shed. Its actually usually advised you don't, if its not entirely ready you can tear new skin off! If you put objects with rough edges in their terrarium (logs, rock, etc) they do this themselves... obviously extreme circumstances like the one with infected eye caps happen, THAT needed help.
@abc123youandme Жыл бұрын
That's what I came to ask. Why are they not able to shed on their own... is it because they can't, or because the owner likes doing it like pulling peeling skin from a sunburn?
@mikahholman1940 Жыл бұрын
@@abc123youandme usually stuck shed is an issue with husbandry, likely a humidity or dietary problem. I mainly work with snakes though they are similar in many ways, and sometimes when they move to a new home and are a bit stressed, ore they are on the older side, shedding can be harder and they might get. Some stuck.

@@mikahholman1940 - I doubt the owner was purposely keeping him in poor conditions just to ensure he couldn’t shed on his own, because the owner wanted to do it. First & foremost, because it was taken to a vet for assistance. If the owner wanted to be able to remove the skin themselves, it doesn’t make sense to take it to the vet before even trying. And that Gecko clearly didn’t have any skin removed prior to the vet doing it. I think they were just neglectful owners who weren’t maintaining the enclosure, water, and humidity levels. Moisture is the most important part of healthy shedding, I’d be willing to bet that it wasn’t given clean, fresh water regularly…and it wasn’t in a big enough dish that he could soak in it. The temperature probably wasn’t being properly monitored either, and he likely wasn’t being fed consistently. I genuinely hate people who take on the responsibility of a pet, but when the newness wears off they neglect them. They act like small reptiles can just be replaced if they die & it’s not a big deal. And when parents buy something like that for their kid, they HAVE to at least check to make sure the kid is properly caring for it. You can’t just trust that they know what they’re doing….because the animal is the one that suffers. People annoy me to no end these days!

It is rewarding to see how healthy and happy the dragons CNBD has raised as a community with everyone's knowledge and experience. I then look at Cheecho and the bond is deep because his existence has been shitty for awhile. I lived life as just "existing" for awhile. And I told little Cheecho that I know it's hard work to rehab himself but that he was in a great house and besides living at a vets house he was a lucky dragon as much as I feel lucky to have found him. GREAT QUESTION 👍

It is only painful if it is premature, or if there is a medical issue if your reptile isn't producing enough lymphatic fluid during the shedding process. It actually shouldn't be painful and if it is that person should stop immediately. Discomfort around eye caps is reasonable, shedding is a very vulnerable time and I would hate to have some big weird creature with wiggley worms on either side of there torso trying to touch my eye ball when I can't see shit but my shedding fluid.

It is generally advised not to pull on shed. Soaking them can help the shed come loose (on beardies ) is what I’m most versed in I’ve had one for almost 4 years now. In certain cases you may have to help them get it started or if you stuck shed to help them remove it as it can cause infection among other problems. Not to mention it must be extremely uncomfortable for them. I have had to only help my Toothless with stuck shed a handful of times mostly nose and ear plugs.

But our environments, soft safe and designed for hairless humans, aren't sufficient to help remove anything. The lizards are also much more sedentary as pets, meaning that they move less. All of this combines with the fact that we love and care for our pets to make assisting the lizards much more common than it would naturally be.
