Welcoming Marmaduke, an 8-week old male tangerine bearded dragon, to his new home! As mentioned at the start of the video, we got him from Atomic Lizard Ranch: atomiclizardra...
Thanks everyone for the useful tips & feedback in the comments!
I'd also like to address some of the complaints:
1. What's with the "terrible" packaging? -- This way of shipping baby bearded dragons is actually industry standard and has a high survival rate. The way Atomic Lizard Ranch packed him was quite thoughtful: the bag was made of breathable cloth, it was loosely packed with cushioning paper, the styrofoam box had holes poked in it, and he was only in the box for 16 hours. This packaging is a compromise between giving enough room to breathe, but snug enough so that he wouldn't be jostled around too much during shipping. Also, FedEx has an agreement with sellers who use this "LIVE Reptiles2You" packaging to transport them with care. Here's a website with more details on that: www.reptiles2yo...
I can almost guarantee that the reptiles sold in pet stores (which obviously had to be shipped from somewhere!!!) were NOT packaged or shipped as carefully as Marmaduke was. Before purchasing Marmaduke, I went to 4 different pet stores in town, including 2 locally owned reptile shops, but NOT ONE of them could tell me anything about the breeders, how far away the dragons came from, what day they were born on, etc. The enclosures were dirty and over-crowded. The staff also had minimal knowledge of proper bearded dragon care. I would much rather directly support an ethical breeder like Atomic Lizard Ranch -- one who can tell me how the parents and babies were raised -- than pay an uninformed pet store for simply being the middle man.
The comments complaining about the packaging are getting REALLY old, people!! I might start deleting any new ones ....
2. Why did you take soooOoOOoOoooOoo long to get him out of the bag? -- Imagine that you had just been shipped in a box through the mail. You're healthy and intact, but probably disoriented and in a bit of shock. Wouldn't you prefer to be handled gently? The little dude was scared, burrowing into the corner of the bag with his claws stuck in to the fabric, didn't want to come out yet. Rather than just yanking him out for the sake of impatient KZbin viewers, I gave him a few minutes to get used to my voice and come around to the idea of me getting him out. And he turned out just fine!!! He was handled sparingly for the first 2 weeks (as is the standard recommendation for newly relocated reptiles) and has turned out to be a perfectly well-adjusted, inquisitive, cuddly, friendly, and adventurous beardie. Watch some of the other videos if you wanna check him out!
Thanks for watching!!!!! 😁
P.S. In case you're concerned, the live plants in the terrarium have been carefully selected as non-toxic to bearded dragons and should be safe if he decides to take a nibble 😃

To All: Before you consider posting another complaint about the packaging or how slow I took him out... READ THE DESCRIPTION! Thanks ❤🦎❤
@zetaopress2389
@zetaopress2389 5 жыл бұрын
People are so ignorant and don't know how to read descriptions. But i understand how you felt in the video lol i just bought mines 2 days ago. Also note that it's best to buy the bugs at a pet store. cause if you catch wild ones they might have a disease or parasite and it can travel into the lizard and harm it.

He's very beautiful. I'm really jealous. I've gotta ask though. I've heard that your not supposed to handle or pick em up for a week? Is that true? (I have no knowledge on reptile pets)
@MeetMarmaduke
@MeetMarmaduke 5 жыл бұрын
@@sethpierce1477 Yes, the standard recommendation is to handle bearded dragons sparingly for the first 1-2 weeks to allow them to adjust to the new environment and shake off their relocation stress. It's best to handle them only as needed for feeding and cleaning, then otherwise leave them be. But it is a good idea to spend time around their tank, just hanging out and doing normal things, so they learn that you're not a threat. After the first few weeks they will become more curious and allow you to handle them without getting stressed out.

Arcticfloof yes they 100% are.....when you raise one from a baby. The hardest part about owning one is the initial cost. Cages lights and everything else you need are kind of expensive. Also read a whole lot about how to take care of them because it’s absolutely necessary to make it live to its potential. Just a tip: don’t use sand as a base. Try out sandpaper and if it starts to rub it’s head against it then replace it with something else immediately

You did a great job unboxing him, and these people should not hate on you for working slowly, and making sure that he's okay. When you noticed he raised his tail, it's because he's exploring, getting a feel of the place, he's just alert, and knows you're there. Something that I would recommend doing when handling a dragon for it's first time with you (new dragon) is washing your hands with warm-hot water, and a big thing that I noticed that you didn't do, is petting his chin. When you pet their chin, it gives them a chance to do a mlem (lick) and get a feel for what you are, and for some reason, it makes them feel safe a lot of the time (because they could "overpower" your finger, since it's under them, I guess) Anyway, that's it, and he's very pretty and I wish you guys well with raising him.

Cute little dragon. I'm new to them but I figured out how to get them to drink. Use a dropper or even a peice of veggie to place a drop of water on the tip of his nose. He'll lick it, figure out he likes it and look for more. I got him for the kids, I'm more of a monitor guy. I've been reading and watching videos. They are more work than a baby monitor. My monitor drank on his own, ate on his own, bathed on his own from day one. Our baby dragon is like having a human infant. Make sure he eats, make sure he drinks, give him a warm bath. It's all good, he's a super cute, curious about everything. He'll sit on my hand real nice. When my monitor was a baby, he wanted to fight half the time.

I love him so much and it pains me to see these people get these creatures and just leave them in the cold and don’t feed them. But you are being so gentle with it and i’m so so so glad that the beardie will have a nice home with you i’m sure you’ll make an amazing beardie parent!!!

Not a complaint, but helping you with some details. Don't forget also they are usually given anti-stress medication before shipping, that doesn't wear off until he gets some fresh air. This would explain the difficulty getting him out of the bag. On my 2nd job there is a turtle and lizard farm, and a tropical fish farm nearby, and we actually load these boxes into cargo containers that go on the plane. I know exactly how much these little guys can get bounced around. Almost horribly. Without the meds, they would be Dead On Arrival, literally. BTW, cute that you named him Marmaduke, after the comic strip dog with the same colouring. Love it.

I have a bearded dragon the same colour about 8-10 months old and when yours was in the bottom of the bag, the position it was in was lying in meant that it was unhappy and when it was on your hand it was agitated as its tail was curved in the air, same as when he was in the box. Hope all goes well for u all. Locusts and fresh rocket is really good for beardy's and if you use a syringe to try and give it some water then that's great.

I got a bearded dragon recently. He survived 4 days without food and water and to make matters worse the heating pad got cold two days in. I don’t know why it took 4 days when it was only supposed to take 1 or 2. The mail woman also threw the box he was in at my aunts door. When she opened it he wasn’t moving and my aunt had to put him in her shirt to warm in up. He now is back in good shape and I named him Rambo as a result of him be a survivor. He looks like the one in the video. I’m glad not all bearded dragons are treated like mines were.

There are numerous reputable online breeders who will ship babies to your home. I would caution against buying a bearded dragon from a pet store chain, as they usually cannot provide information about their breeders and don't have expertise on reptiles. I got my baby from Atomic Lizard Ranch: atomiclizardranch.net/bearded-dragons-for-sale/ Also, I hear that a lot of people try to re-home their bearded dragons via Craigslist when they can no longer care for them, so that would be a good place to check as well! You'd probably get their whole setup too (tank, lights, etc.)

@MeetMarmaduke
@MeetMarmaduke 6 жыл бұрын
I'd say Craiglist itself is a pretty safe and reliable website. If you're worried about meeting weirdos, you may want to bring a friend with you and ask the owner to meet you just outside of the house first, then you can go inside if you get good vibes. The standard advice is to meet Craiglist sellers at a safe public location (like a library), but that would be hard to do with a reptile!

Actually its common practice to ship reptiles, fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. There are standards set that minimize risk of injury, and usually reptiles\amphibians\invertebrates tend to do well on the journey, fish can be a bit more difficult, even with the highest quality of care\shipment though.

Try crickets!! Live ones My beardie Hates roaches and meal worms. Crickets are great Cause your beardie will learn to hunt cause crickets jump and it helps them hunt. You dont want to just scoop them up from the side always. From the front under there chin they will walk up or just kinda get them on. But please reply if you are having fun with your beardie! 😘🍀✔

Hi there, thanks for the feedback! I did try crickets for a few days (you can see him eating those in another video). He seemed to like them for a couple days and then got sick of them, stopped chasing them on the 3rd or 4th day. Which I don't mind, because crickets STINK so bad! He does loooove his roaches though. Mealworms are not the best for babies, as they contain a lot of chitin which is hard to digest and can cause impaction. Not much protein either. I wouldn't feed them to adults either, there are lots of better choices like superworms, hornworms, and silkworms (not to mention dubias)! Tomatoes aren't the best either (not much nutrition there), but it's ok once in a while.
