You’ve probably already decided and are on your way. But in case you still need ideas here goes. I’d consider buying a 3/4” treated plywood. Cut it to fit that whole area underneath. 20”x5’ or whatever yours is. Find 1-2’ long metal plate to sandwich between existing camper and new ply and Screw/glue it together. Reattach the tie bracket. I would also try to figure out where that hole is in the inside of the camper (maybe inside cabinetry?) and put a 4” to 6“ x 2‘ metal plate and or treated wood there as well. If you’ve got the inside and the exterior underside supported then put stainless bolts nuts and lockwashers through it along with the bracket. I hope this makes sense. If you are still in the mood to do Baja go for it but like you said if you feel more peace with going back home, then hightail it back to the states.
@CandEAdventures Жыл бұрын
The hard part is it’s on a corner and the edge of the camper with no space above it. We will probably have to remove the cabinets or something when we get to a place to stay for a while. We do need to cover up the new hole into our cabinets though😂🙏

I just saw that your camper tie down ripped out. The same thing happened on my truck camper. What I did to get home is the same thing I still do. It turns out that the way the manufacturers install those mounts is not the strongest part of the camper. The strongest point in my opinion is the jacks that support all of the weight when the camper is standing on the ground. What I did is this. Normally the jack is held on to the big corner plates by a “U” clamp. I removed the bolt of the “U” clamp and installed a eye bolt that I bought at a hardware store near where I was camping. I also bought some chain and two “S” hooks. Then I put one “S” hook through the eye bolt, then the chain, then another “S” hook and then the turn buckle tie down. Basically instead of the damaged ripped out hook, connect your turn buckle to the jack. Even after repairing my damaged hole and hook, I don’t use it. I still use a eye bolt on the jack. To fix the hole I cut out the rotten wood and sandwiched a new piece of wood in with a metal plate above inside and below outside. Most importantly find and repair the leek that caused the rot. Let me know if you have any questions, good luck and enjoy the journey. God bless.
@missionofdisciples5341 Жыл бұрын
Ps. It looks like your furnace is in that location. You may find when you get home that you can slide out the furnace and access the damaged area.
@CandEAdventures Жыл бұрын
That’s smart ! The anchor location def doesn’t seem like the strongest location . I don’t know why the jacks are not the original tie down points . After looking at it more we think there is some water damage and soft wood that needs replaced . We may just fix it like you suggest and just patch the hole and keep using it as is .

depending on what's above on the inside of the camper, you could use a piece of plate (steel or aluminum) or an angle to sandwich above and below, then bolt the attachment for the hold down to it? in the mean time, you could use your lug wrench on the inside to span the hole and attach a motorcycle tie down to it and the truck mount and cinch it down. when you think about it, plywood isn't that strong, so it shouldn't take much to duplicate the strength of the original attachment point? good luck - hope that this doesn't end your most excellent adventure!

I think steel strips about 6" wide by 4' should do it. . [edited to add] I would use at least three, at the front of the camper floor, near the rear, and another about half-way. . Can you access the pick-up bed rails? Could you bolt through the camper into the top of the pick-up bed sides?

@@CandEAdventures so my wood was very rotted or at least to the point where most of the strength was out of it. mine is a 92 palomino popup, classic 8 ft so a slightly different camper than yours. what I ended up doing was building a steel tubular frame for the camper to sit on. so the steel has all the stress from the tie downs and legs. 100 times more stable. the camper itself is just along for the ride. to repair the rotting wood, I sandwiched new 3/4 treated plywood both above and below making to wood strong again. mine is assisted by the steel frame but the wood definitely helped. I know it doesn't help you right now but if you want to know more details about this repair. we can email or message each other if you want. could be an inexpensive repair to be able to keep your camper solid and stable for years to come.

Hi guys, I am sorry that the attachment point failure happened. I think that you have a better chance of finding someone to fix it in Mexico than in the US. American mechanics are more used to replacing things than fixing them. Mexicans are more likely to improvise repairs and to be able to jury-rig something. I would find a welder/metal fabricator in Mexico that will sandwich the hole between 2 strong metal plates bolted to each other through the floor, and weld an attachment ring to the bottom. I would spray expanding foam in the space between the plates to seal it. This would be a long-term, but temporary fix,. Eventually, when you have the time and money, you will need to replace the floor because I wouldn't trust the other 3 corners that didn't break. Your floor plywood maybe rotten or weakened. Meanwhile, be very careful over bumps and on trails. I hope that helps. Good luck! I Iook forward to viewing you continuing your adventure.
