Great design, but it misses hanging lid. And has to be in titanium. Aluminium is bad for health reason. And the fact that everyone has a MSR stove and the brand says that is won't work with it is a no go too for me.
@lawsnewton3 ай бұрын
I think the best part is that the FireMaple works as a Heat Exchanger but the slots that the pot slot on to adds pot stability. Which keeps a basic accident from knocking your pot off the stove.

Absolutely fabulous review: everything we needed to know, nothing we didn't, delivered in a clear and concise fashion. Many thanks! One aside: it is worth noting this pot will NOT work with the BRS stoves that are popular with ultralight backpackers. Those stoves have a 3 prong-pot stand, but the prong centers are offset so the prongs won't fit in the heat exchanger grooves.

I also just received this pod. The plastic lid stuck on the pod when it gets hot, so that's why tests here are without the lids. No fuel consumptions data, because they wanted to show how fast it works, consuming insane amount of gas , these stoves are quite powerfull and diameter of the pot is tiny, so its very inefficient test, and yea, no one cares about couple of minutes outdoor except its race. I did my own tests, with pocket rocket2 and brs3000, and when you set the output to eco mode, the consumption is exactly the same ie 5gr for 500ml (sorry Im in Europe) comparing to msr titanium pod without HE. And lastly its seems designed especially for they own stoves and grooves below are offset indeed, however my pocket rocket 2 fits ok and brs300 also fits but some wiggling is required. Some people bend the legs a bit to make it more comfortable.There is a huge benefit of HE pots, however its not mentioned in this review at all. I guess thats fine for youtubers, its just a business and if they leave any negativity if the review, they will most probably be canceled by manufacturers. This is same stiry for majority of big youtubers ,

I bought this after seeing a short of this from your channel a month ago. For me it solves so many problems I didn’t realize were so nice not to have. I also use it with the windmaster. Very efficient, works very well in wind. Because it has the inset, it is hard for the pot to fall off. Used it in 35 mph sustained wind and 55mph gust and still boiled water in 2.5 min water temp around freezing. For those curious the BRS can work as well but tight. Can modify the groves a little wider so it can get on easier. Handle stays cool no burning your hand. Awesome lid. Can see water boiling so you waste less fuel and takes out the guess work. Just fantastic. Fire maple nailed it.

If it takes 1.5 to 2 oz of alcohol to boil 2 cups, you have a crappy stove. Just saying

Under natural conditions. A little wind. Ive used comercial alcohol stoves that did worse. What alcohol stove are you useing that uses less than 1.5 oz of fuel to boil 16 oz of water?
@FlatCatGear6 ай бұрын
@@razorsharp170 Well, if you look at our user name, you’ll find our company (yes, we make alcohol cooking systems). That being said, not only us, but Trail Designs offers systems that will boil 2 cups using 15-20 ml of alcohol. Been there, done that. The windscreen will help reduce fuel consumption in the wind. In very high winds, these system will never consume 1.5 oz for just 2 cups of water.

FYI, With a canister stove and the Petrel pot, we routinely boil 2 cups of water using 5-6 grams of isobutane fuel.

Gearskeptic has a really great test of this pot and other HX pots against standard Toaks pots. The take away is based on fuel saving alone, likely not worth the extra weight (with no wind). He is retesting with wind and we will get one and for all if HX pots are worth it. Personally, I have used both Toaks + Windmaster and jet boil stash HX pot + Windmaster. I much prefer the latter. Yes it weighs more, but HX pots performs so much better in wind and real world conditions. Set and forget kind of experience. Can’t wait to test the Firemaple pot and the Windmaster!
@DDF14088 ай бұрын
Ditto, I use the stash pot plus pocket Rocket deluxe
@Andy-Mesa8 ай бұрын
His testing crucially doesn't account for wind, which is a *huge* factor. I used this pot with a Soto Windmaster in the San Jacintos during a 70 mph windstorm and it lit right up. Neither of my lighters would work, so a BRS would be useless.
@bcdowz48757 ай бұрын
If the increased efficiency of the HX pot enables you to carry one less fuel canister, or a smaller one, then you come out ahead weight wise. Otherwise, the Toaks pot is always going to be the lighter option. I just bought the Petrel to use with the Windmaster and I love it. But on anything less than a week long trip, I’ll be taking the Toaks 650.
@DDF14087 ай бұрын
@@bcdowz4875 The Hx pot provides much better wind resistance which in real life reduces the risk of not being able to cook or with burning through a ton of fuel unexpectedly. Seen these play out on my trips. I also offset the weight of the Hx by bringing less fuel but you have to have really dialed in & know your fuel consumption
@bcdowz48757 ай бұрын
@@DDF1408 You have some good points. I always carry a 1 oz twig/esbit stove that I made out of titanium sheet as a back up, and it also serves as a windscreen for the canister stove. Before I bought the Petrel Hx pot, I just carried 1 or 2 esbit cubes (0.5 oz each) just in case. With the Hx pot, I generally get about 1g more fuel efficiency per 2 cup boil than with the Toaks 650 lite pot and windscreen when using the Windmaster stove. This translates to one or two more boils for a 100g canister, which is not insignificant. But the Hx pot weighs more than double the Toaks 650 lite, so unless it saves me from carrying an extra fuel canister, it’s going to weigh a bit more than the Toaks system.

Great budget friendly option! My Jetboil Stash with Soto Windmaster boiled 2 cups in 1:15 with 4.5g of fuel used, but that was with the lid on. And it weighs a little less at 5.15 ozs. But the cost is def more. I agree that saving $ on fuel pays dividends and allows you to go further with your gas can. What's equally important in that equation is the stove. Higher BTUs with a regulator and being great in the wind goes hand in hand with an efficient pot. Nice one Devin!

@tlgrimmy6 ай бұрын
Glad to see they're offering this pot separately now! I bought it quite awhile ago as a kit with that Hornet stove, but knew I wasn't going to care for the stove much. I modified the base just by nicking the inside corners of the slots with a Dremel so that my MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe can slide in better. I've used it on a ton of trips now. This thing is an absolute beast! The boil times are absurdly good. I'm not sure there's a better/faster combo out there than this pot with an MSR PRD or the Soto Windmaster. It even beats an MSR Reactor! I went on a backpacking trip with 4 people and would feel comfortable with this being the only stove setup. It boils so dang fast that I can rapid fire prep 1.5-2 cups of water quicker than most larger setups could do a larger batch. It's also not overkill for solo adventures. Love how wind proof it is too, especially with the slots allowing the burner to sit further up in the heat exchanger area. If you're thinking about trying this little pot, you definitely should! Easily worth the slight weight increase over a Toaks 750ml pot.

Thank you so much for introducing this new pot. Devin, I use my Soto Windmaster stove with the 4 prong burner so it wouldn't work for my set up but I can still fit it on top of the fuel canister in my Toaks 750 ml pot. I'm able to do it by squeezing the pot slightly so the stove fits down snugly below the lid. I also put a mini Bic lighter down first and set the canister over it saving space for my Soto Windmaster, cleaning sponge, camp soap & paper towel. Works like a charm & the paper shop towel doubles for the pot holder when it gets hot. Small twigs work for taking the lid off, LOL! 😉

Hi Devin, thank you for this review. I've been hoping for a smaller heat exchanger pot, so when this came along, I grabbed one. I happened to have the Soto Windmaster already. Before this I used the Soto New River Pot, which is wider and more shallow, so stoves don't fit quite so easily into that on top of a gas cannister. This Firemaple pot is the perfect size for solo hiking, and apart from the Windmaster with Triflex pot support, I also add a Bic Mini lighter and the Sea To Summit XCup fits on top. I love how the handle snaps over the lid and keeps everything in place. The Soto River Pot has a very loose lid and I had to use rubber bands to secure it. I'm very pleased with this pot.

Picked up this pot after seeing this review not long ago, along with the Polaris Pressure-regulator Gas Stove (since I am regularly at 9500+ ft of elevation) and have to say I love the setup. I have Jetboil MiniMo and this kit is so much easier to use. Borrowed the canister stand from the MiniMo to make it a little more stable. I'm able to fit a 100g fuel can, stove, Jetboil folding stand and a full size Bic with no problem. Pot lip allows for an extremely even pour of liquid, without having to worry about it trailing back down the bottom side of the pot as you pour. Its a little detail, but not having worry about boiling water dipping or coving your dehydrated meal bag is a welcomed benefit. Have used this setup on 3 trips up in the Uinta's, at 10.5K ft, and had full 600ml pots at a rolling boil before I could get two backpacking meals opened, and in their Big Sky insulated pouches. Averaged 6.5g of fuel usage on each boil, which included bringing the flame down and letting the water raise in temp for 20-30 seconds after the boil to compensate for the altitude. Am thinking of picking up one of the knock off Windmaster stoves (Campingmoon XD-2F) with the TriFlex pot stand to see how well this setup works. Having a reliable piezo igniter attached to the stove would make this almost the perfect setup. Only issue I have had is the lid seems to suction onto the pot at the time of boil, which can make it is pain to get off if needed. I have just started aligning the staining holes on the side of the pot I will pour from, making sure to hold the lid closed by the little rubber lid grabber.

So cool! Do you happen to know if the MSR pocket rocket works with this? You said the Soto Windmaster does, tho? I actually have a BRS stove (which I’m sure won’t work with it), but anything that improves fuel efficiency has my interest. I was thinking of upgrading to the pocket rocket anyway…

I just bought this pot and the greenpeaks stove. I have the pocket rocket deluxe. The deluxe is a far better stove. If you want to use the deluxe all you have to do is slightly turn in the supports as if you're about to put it away. I don't mean bend them, I mean start to turn them in. Then it fits perfectly. And boils super fast. Best I could do boiling 500ml cold tap water using the greenpeak is 2min30s. With the deluxe 1min45s. I wish I had saved my money and didn't buy the greenpeak.

Really nice design features. I would purchase if there was a Ti version with 4 cutouts.

Highly unlikely for there to be a titanium version. From what I understand brands that have tried heat exchanger style pots in titanium in the past have has issues with the titanium fins not being able to handle the heat causing warping and issues.

Can you ask the Fire Maple company to make a titanium version? The connection with aluminum and Alzheimer's is problematic. I have a jetboil flash titanium and they don't make it anymore. Would love another like this one from Fire Maple and I also have the Soto Windmaster stove!

Thats exactly my concerns. They have known since the early 80s that aluminium mess tins were effecting soldiers. I am only happy using Titanium these days.

Fair. But this is mainly for boiling water which prevents the inside metal from getting above 212f. The concern around aluminum cookware is more so in relation to extreme heat exposure.

The Pocket Rocket Deluxe arms are offset a few degrees, but it will work if you are OK either bending the arms slightly, or cutting a shallow angle in the heat exchange on the fire maple pot. I just bent the arms and it works great. Great upgrade from the Stanley Adventure pot.

This is killer Devin the second I saw this I was intrigued. I hate the jet boil style bulk/ weight but I absolutely love its design and functionality. Does this firemaple pot work with a BRS stove?
@BackcountryExposure8 ай бұрын
I’ve always wondered why there’s so much plastic and bulk around the stove of the Jetboil. Maybe thetas where the Stash system from them makes more sense. No, the BRS stove does NOT work with this pot. I mean it will, but it doesn’t slide into the pots cut outs, it’d have to sit on top of them. The BRS pot supports don’t extend perpendicular to the burner.

While I'm cooking the rice, I can add anything to it and it still comes out perfect. I don't like that the latches lock going upward though, that's always felt bass-ackwards.
