I bought a Roadmachine 02 Three when it was released in 2018. It cost me $3500 at the time. It was the 105 spec bike which was BMC's cheapest offering with a carbon frame. Not long after I purchased a Sram eTap groupset and converted it to electronic shifting. Shimano was still kind of getting their footing with electronic drive trains at the time. It cost me $1300 for the kit and I had to install it myself. I also converted the press fit bottom bracket to a threaded bottom bracket with a kit from Wheels Manufacturing (this is an absolute must for carbon frames). I have enjoyed doing all of these upgrades myself as it helped me learn my bike inside and out. And for many of us, buying a top spec (or even mid level) bike just isn't a reality. My frame has scars too. I was about halfway through a corner once under a heavy tree canopy. The road was paved but covered by a thick blanket of pine needles. The tires instantly came out from under towards my lean and I ended up laying the bike down. I also want to upgrade to wheels and bars like you have. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I feel you brother. About 10 years ago, I bought my wife a bike with the pipe dream that she would ride with me. The closest I've gotten was I've got her to get on her trainer (my old trainer actually) and ride while I'm on my trainer. I've only been able to accomplish that very occasionally.

I just got a roadmachine three with ultegra di2 to replace an aging madone 3 and it's been stunning how much of an upgrade it is. It climbs so fast and weighs less, yet it's comfortable and can even handle little gravel stints. I'm so happy with it. Glad you're in the same boat.

I have the Team Machine, I got it at Velo Pasadena also, and it's one of the most comfortable race bikes I've owned. I've been through many brands like Bianchi, BH, Orbea, S-Works, Look, Masi, Cannondale, Giant, just to name a few, and the BMC is the one I've finally gone with. I've had many Tarmacs over my time because that was the most comfortable bike for me and I used it as a barometer, so I kept going back to them. But once I got the BMC SLR01 I have since sold my S-Works Tarmac SL7 and can use that money for something else. BMC is my choice when it comes to comfort and handling on a race bike. Good choice there. And if you decide to go with the Team Machine down the road I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I own this bike but with 105 and everything you said on this video resonated with me. Especially when it comes to cornering and descending, it's dangerously confident. You're pushing and pushing, and you don't seem to find the limit, it just goes wherever you throw it to. If only it wasn't on the heavy side, despite being snappy, it would have been near perfect. It would be interesting to hear the experience of someone going from Roadmachine to Teammachine though, because I did as well consider it.

I got a BMC Roadmachine Two earlier this year. I was on the fence about getting a Cervelo Caledonia or a BMC. The Cervelo seemed more practical but the BMC just had the aesthetically pleasing allure. And I had the same experience you had, once I tested the BMC it felt like I was on a rocketship, it transformed me, and maybe the Ultegra Di2 helped push me to BMC. I've also noticed that cornering on this bike is something else. I have zero regrets. I can't imagine how much a pair of wheels would make this bike that much more better than it already is! Also just wanted to add thank you for your BMC content, I think your review of BMC definitely helped me even think about BMC before I bought this bike.

Amazing similarities to my own experience: I'm long-legs, short-torso, low-flexibility guy. I had been riding an aluminum Synapse ca. 2007. Bought a Roadmachine in 2019 which transformed me from an infrequent cyclist to "cyclist." I was torn between Roadmachine and Teammachine but opted for the more endurance geometry and handling since I felt that I wasn't ready for a "race" bike. Like you, I've had the nagging question of whether I should have gone Teammachine. Now several years later I moved (Budapest to Vienna) to a place with more hills, curves, and switchbacks, and I can't help but notice that the Roadmachine is great in corners and sinuous descents, but is hard to turn over in switchbacks (boat-like?!) due to slack head angle. After several years of mulling, it's time to bite the bullet and try the Teammachine. (but then more agony - 56 or 58?! RM is 58, and has always felt big, but am I, a mere mortal, ready for a snappy, short 56 TM?! Cycling is fun and agony. )

I have a 2020 Teammachine and just got a 2023 Roadmachine. Both bikes are awesome but slightly different. While the Teammachine is giving you that sportscar feeling, the Roadmachine feels more like driving a sporty SUV. If I could only have one bike it would be the Teammachine - but following the n+1 rule, the Roadmachine is an awesome addition for longer rides/bikepacking.

Just bought the same bike second hand (size 54), the comfort is outstanding! Coming from a Carrrera Nitro Carbon, which is kind of an old school carbon bike, very harsh compared to this BMC. Only had to swap the saddle and ordered a shorter stem (80 mm instead of the 110 mm). The steering of the Carrera is pretty nervous, this one makes me feel so much more confident in the corners.

In these sports of passion we’re always fantasizing about the next bike or next upgrade. Since I’m about 25 years into this journey I can tell you that it’s not really about the bike but about the love of the sport and all it’s details. I still love getting a new bike and all the goofy upgrades precisely because this is a passion and not some logical business. So go get the next crazy bike because fulfilling that passion is exactly what it’s about. But to add my 2 cents from my years of cycling, don’t get the race bike. They don’t really make any sense for what we do. Usually it means a slightly racer geometry and stiffer frame which only makes things slightly twitchier and rougher. In the long run calmer, smoother bikes are way more pleasant to ride. Leave the race bikes for the crit racers and enjoy the endurance bikes for everything else. Remember smooth is fast and fun. The secret is to get an endurance bike that looks all sexy and racey but has calm and smooth handling. Best of both worlds. Looks fast but rides smooth. That’s the perfect blend.

You just can't get that off the rack. (It was custom made.) I'm just not sure there are any non-custom road frames that can fit someone like me with a very long torso. Does the BMC have geometry options? If so, I might be interested.

I first found your channel mid last year as I started researching between the Teammaching and the Roadmachine, trying to figure out which way I wanted to go. At that point I’d been riding my old Trek 5000 for 16 years. It was an entry level race geometry but I wondered if it was time for me to move to a more endurance geometry bike as I’m getting older, not racing, and most of my rides are long rides (I prefer 100+ miles with my long of 202 miles). After watching your journey I was pretty much sold on getting the Roadmachine 01 Five, even after talking to the bike shop while getting my Trek refit and their thought is that I would most likely prefer the Teammachine simply because of what I was used to. So I finished out last season and looked forward to a hopeful spring where I could test ride both of them and buy one. Then it happened the day my wife said it was time for me to put myself first, stop putting off a new bike for other “priorities” and go get one. I test road both back to back and I went with the Teammachine 01 Five. I have to say that I love the feel, the quick get up and go as well as the quick agile feel. I’m still testing out different heights before I have them cut the steering tube but I can honestly say that this is by far my best bike ever. Funny side note. On our way home from the bike shop when I had ordered it I asked my wife if she was going to be upset with me for spending that much money on the bike. She said, “The way I look at it, this is the bike you are going to die on.” My response, “I hope I not going to die on it.” Of course she just meant that it was my forever bike and that was why she was fine with me not compromising to a lower cost bike. Of course she might regret the purchase now as I haven’t stopped talking about how much I love it for the last two weeks.

I have the orange roadmachine one 2023 ultegra di2 for 5000 euro, brake cables not integrated in the cockpit, but I prefer that. One thing I don't like is the position of the seat tube adjusting screw, very unpractical. There is nothing i'd like to change so far, tires probably but i'll first wear out the ones it came with. One thing i regret is that the front derailleur bolt is at it's lowest already, so i wonder if i can put a 46/33 on it,as i did on my previous compact bike. I also might try out in a few months if a 36 cass might work.

Late to the party so not sure if it will be read. I'm looking for a disc brake performance bike (as a second bike) with options for a lot of drop since that's what my first bike has. Given that you posted this 9 months ago and rode a year on it back then, I'm assuming this is the older gen BMC. I rode a similar model to yours and found that the back was overly plush at the back, to the point that I was thinking I might be riding with a flat. Also felt like some of the tech on it was dated compared to newer bikes like specialized for example. In the video you basically say that there's no downsides. What other brands have you considered buying? What were your criteria that the bike should meet? It seems like you weren't too picky in terms of geometry, modes of shifting, aero, weight etc., just comfort for the longer rides. Am I correct in that assessment? Was the all-round geometry a consequence of it being a safer pick for slightly more beginner cyclist? Thanks for the video, hope you can offer some more insight!

Ended up with a Trek Domane instead, although it doesn't look as clean as roadmachine. I still am not completely satisfied with d-post though. If BMC adopts BSA/T47 BB shell in their frames and use standard round seatpost for roadmachine, I would go for them no brainer.

I bought a BMC Roadmachine. Whilst I am happy with the way it rides, the quality of the frame leaves me disappointed. During my first maintenance checks I noticed a manufacturing defect on the underside of the chainstay. I contacted the bike shop who reported back to me that the response from BMC was that because the manufacturing defect is not readily visible they find that it is acceptable to them and that I have to accept it.The point is that had I noticed this when purchasing I would not have purchased this bike and would have requested another one. On this basis I would not recommend BMC to anyone.

I just bought one thanks to your video with an ultegra di2. Howerver I'm disappointed that the brake ducts are not fully integrated for the price !
@MitchBoyer Жыл бұрын
It is a bit of a bummer. Especially since the rest of the bike is so solid. I’ve thought about switching the fork out but traveling with the external cables is much easier than the internal cables in my experience.
@clementcastel1682 Жыл бұрын
@@MitchBoyer I think if you switch to an ICS2 cockpit instead of an ICS1, it might be possible to integrate brake cables without switching the fork. Next upgrade for you ? :)
@MitchBoyer Жыл бұрын
@@clementcastel1682 unfortunately the fork is necessary. There is no way to integrate the cables up the post. I have the BMC URS which has integrated cables and the fork uses a special tube that gives space for the integrated cables.

I think you chose the right bike and model for your size. However, the Team Machine geometry is very friendly with stack and reach. You probably could've gone with that model. I just built up a 2022 BMC SLR01 Team Machine Shimano DA 12 Speed. It is an absolute beast when it comes to cornering and comfort. I'm 5'8" and went with a size 51. 15lb bike with cages and pedals. Awesome RIG I must say. BMC kicks ass.

I'm lucky enough to have an earlier UCI stamped Roadmachine 01 LTD as my 'best' bike. I can only echo your thoughts, it's the best allrounder for rapid mile munching that I've ever ridden. It replaced a Venge Disc and I've not looked back since, it's just sublime to ride. If I had to critique, it's that the super compliant rear triangle can create a bit of a flat rear tyre feeling on specific surfaces and situations. I run Conti tubeless at 75 PSI though, higher pressures may alleviate that.
@jamesinrok2 жыл бұрын
Nice video! Dont worry about replacing parts. That you assembled it all yourself means that you know much more about bikes than the average person (i.e. me). I got myself a team machine 01 three just two years into my cycling journey. Still love the bike, though now i share my love with even more bikes. 🫢

Hi, couldnt help to notice your bike case at the beginning of the video. It looked very small and compact. What brand/type is it?
@MitchBoyer2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's the Orucase B2. I love it. Super compact (you do need to remove your fork and bars when packing), and sometimes I don't even get charged a bike fee because it's about as big as a normal suitcase. It's definitely paid for itself with all the bike fees I've avoided

Mitch! Appreciate your videos! I’m about to pull the trigger on a new bike. The Roadmachine is actually my top pick. Given you have a good amount of miles into this bike, I was wondering if you had any bottom bracket issues with it being press fit?
@MitchBoyer Жыл бұрын
That’s awesome dude, thanks for watching! It’s a fantastic bike No issues at all with the bottom bracket. When I installed the Ultegra Di2 on it I replaced the bottom bracket and was worried my amateur installation might mess it up, but it’s been solid. The whole bike is super tight and quiet which I love. (Except for my freehub which is super loud 😜)

Awesome review! Looking at the bike now so crazy that this popped up in my recommendations, the big bike shop in my area has this one for sale. I'd also say another reason to go with a lower end bike and upgrade to the higher end components is if you like the color. BMC seems very picky about their bike colors.

I would like to hear your honest opinion on the Ultegra Di2 compared to the mechanical R8000. I must say, the only thing I can really see as an upgrade, are the levers. Shifting wise the R8000 is fast, precise and crispy. I cannot really see the point of going electric with such a mechanical group-set.
@MitchBoyer2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the mechanical R8000 is phenomenal. The shifting is super crisp for mechanical, especially when I’m just riding along on the flats! The big advantages I’ve found with electronic are when shifting under load while sprinting and climbing. The electronic 12 speed handles it like a champ and I find myself confident shifting at times when I’d never shift with the mechanical setup. That said, I’ve held onto my mechanical groupset and will probably put it back on the Roadmachine if I ever build a new bike.

How did you find the upgrade to Di2? Im currently on 105 mechanical 11speed but um considering upgrading to ultegra di2 on my Focus Izalco Max. Do you think its worth it?
@MitchBoyer11 ай бұрын
Was it necessary? Not really. Do I enjoy it? Yep! haha. The shifting is a little bit smoother, and you'll have more weight savings than I did going from 105 to Ultegra Di2. I still have mechanical shifting on one of my bikes, but the rest are electronic and they are noticeably better... but they don't make me ride any faster if that's top of your priority list. It's basically just a nice thing to have.

If you equip thinner tires (26mm) and a more aggressive stem, the difference in performance between your RoadMachine and a TeamMachine would most likely be negligible. Your bike with the slammed stem already has a more aggressive geometry than most people's "race" bikes with spacers on.

i think you're wrong about the models. the 01 ONE is THE one, the top of the line one.. i think., then they get tweaked from there to be possibly more affordable as they deviate from the 01 ONE down to the FIVE from what i can tell. edit: oh wait this is confusing. you were saying instead of the roadmachine FIVE you can get the 01 FIVE. but why stop there when you can climb up the 01 ladder to the ONE? 😅
