Fun tip, you could have stood on the ground, and mined the coal then went into the water to get it, or crafted a door. In Java you can place the door in the water and are able to peacefully mine and breath in the space the door makes. Also Lapis is central for enchanting, there are better things to use for blue dye, like flowers.
