FLCL!!! Watched this one late at night, went to bed right after, then woke up a different person. 10/10 experience. There's really nothing I can say about the theme that hasn't already been said, but at the very least I can say that one thing that really hit me was "The fog that makes the world look so much smaller." I grew up in a place that, simply put, was bad. My family? Also bad. My childhood was spent dreaming of a life of freedom where I could do anything, and go wherever I wanted. My teenage years were spent in long bouts of silent depression and outbursts of misplaced rage at the realization that I COULD HAVE had those things, but was robbed of them. Adulthood? We'll see. The bat's in-hand and swinging, it's just a matter of finally hitting something!

I love the soundtrack and animation and themes. It is as good as I think storytelling can get. I really wish this level of creativity from the 2000s was still around, but it looks like medical mechanicus was able to flatten our creativity with corporations getting their grubby fingers into every aspect of the entertainment industry and Corraling everything towards mass appeal for maximum profit while paying the artists beans and discouraging creative types from every entering the field professionally.

I love that the chaos and confusion directly reinforces the themes of the show. “I don’t really understand it” good. That’s the point. It’s about what it means to grow up and be an adult in the eyes of a child. And it’s messy. It doesn’t make sense. And it’s chaotic. LIKE EVEN IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND, THATS PART OF YOU UNDERSTANDING THE THEMES MORE! Growing up is confusing and stressful and terrifying. Even when you finally get to that vague sense of “maturity” by the end, you still can’t help but look at it all and few like it was nothing but a chaotic mess loosely held together by a vague excuse of an overarching plot. LIFE IMITATES ART, ART IMITATES LIFE. THATS LITERALLY FLCL.

I remember when this aired on Cartoon Network and going into school the next day and discussing the madness of each episode with my friend. I am not sure I ever fully grasped what was really going on in this show but I loved every second of it. I watched the recent iteration of the series and had a similar result no idea what is going on but still loved it. After watching this though I feel like I need to watch it all over again and really let it sink in because FLCL has lived inside my head for over 2 decades and I dont think I truly ever gave it the attention it deserves.

And then again in episode 6: "They told us not to do the manga thing again, but then we get accused of being lazy!"

That scene where he swings the back, the pillows shredding in the background, the animation, the energy....goosebumps every single time. Single favorite moment in anime.

I consider FLCL one of the foundational anime that hooked me into the genre as a whole. Something about seeing those 6 episodes when I was a teenager fascinated me so much that it stuck with me to this day. And as an adult, I see them so differently, but just as lovingly to this day. I couldn't love anime without it. Great job covering this brilliant show!

I remember being 13. Stumbling on FLCL on Stars network back in 2004 or 5. feeling like Naota. Just stuck, in a mundane life, look up at the sky wondering. I remember how much i fucking LOVED listening to the Pillows. man . . . . thats some powerful Nostalgia I just unlocked from 20 years ago 😶I never truly understood the entire story, and aways felt like it was symbolic.

This is amazing! I’ve felt so similar to you, i’ve seen both: evangelion and flcl. But fooly cooly shaped my life, not even only change it, but it pushed in a specific way and personality that hadn’t been established yet. And every time i watch it (i watch it yearly) i catch something new or at the very least something i forgot about.

The guitar riff during the pan-up on Naota lives rent free in my head
