There are honestly not a ton of things in life that are a pure meritocracy but sport is. Whoever is the fastest runner, strongest lifter, farthest thrower, etc. is the winner it's pure and simple. Where you come from, who your family is, or how much money you have are completely irrelevant because all that matters is your results and there's no shortcut to winning just a ton of practice and hard work over time.

Sports is and can be the pinnacle of one achieving thier own greatness in life.
