Very true. I heard military bands were considered crucial 100 years ago. These bands were responsible for keeping up the morale high of soldiers fighting in trenches.

I promise you I am not an in the middle of a performance clapper. I hate it when people do that. What's similar or worse, is people screeching at a concert. I payed to hear the band, not you people screaming in my ears. Like why even go if all you're going to hear is your own voice.

@Ruby Gee this is in Beijing. I think it's safe to say cheering during a performance isn't tied to just western culture. Any time you get more than a hundred people in a crowd you're likely to run into this problem

Their first ever olympic. 16 years has passed us by. London, Rio De Jeneiro, Tokyo and Paris; we come to realize that 8/8/ 2008 opening ceremony in Beijing is the best ever. No debate needed. Our eyes don't get tired of watching it, no matter how many times we have watched it. It is truly a classic.

Not to denigrate their performance, but they have earpieces (which, tbh, how else could you coordinate 2008 of anything). Hopefully those were cranked up nice and loud :)

the "wrong tempo" is caused by the time it takes for sound to travel. so the sound from the audience and the sound from the drums reach the camera at different times.

As a student volunteer, i had the honor to participate all the process of Beijing 2008 Olympic. I was there for the opening ceremony, and my classmates and I were so moved that we cried together. I was in charge of traffic control at the basketball arena throughout the basketball game and got to meet all the big international players in person. Looking back on it all now, I am so blessed.

A someone who used to do military drills, coordinating a few hundred people already required a ton of training. The fact that they've somehow managed to get over 2000 people to line up so perfectly in their movements is amazing. This takes incredible discipline and practice.

Just listen to any drumming orchestra from Brazil. You have hundreds of players who actually play and do not shout. And the music is magnificent. I give credit for coordination at least.

@@basicallyno1722tempo is easy. It’s the coordination of the movement that’s a challenge. Notice the height of their squats as well as how they manage to keep their arms level with one another. That’s not something a beat alone will teach you

I am still getting goosebumps from watching this. I lived in China then and I remember we all watched this in a rooftop bar on a big screen. Everyone, locals and foreigners stood up with respect. We had tears in our eyes. We were so proud of the country we were temporary residents of.. so proud of their determination and might.

@@ent.8979 I once went to see an off Broadway performance of Stomp (which is a very rhythmically based performance. Look it up if you've never heard of it, it's a wild experience live.) And they tried to get the crowd to participate by doing a follow my lead clap and the poor audience couldn't even maintain a steady clap. They kept trying easier variations but the crowd just couldn't do even a simple 1-2--3-4 so they eventually just gave up and moved on to the next bit but it was so painful to experience. The performer looked dumbfounded. 🤣 I guess some people just don't have the rhythm. Lol

-give 2008 people the same drum demonstration. (be it in internet or via video clip) -let them practice for like a 1 or 2 months i guess -in 2 or 1 week before the event let them go in groups (in each group there should be a guide so others will follow and let the 2008 adapt and be comfortable with numbers) -there will be a the big stage rehearsal checking all mics lights and etc

I remember how upset I was for missing this when it was originally aired. Back then, you couldn't find any recordings of it online. Yes. Every opening ceremony after has brought me back to this moment. Although the drone globe in Japan was pretty beautiful and breathtaking. A sign of a new age.

This was the first time China was on the huge international national stage and they absolutely knocked it out of the park. They made their mark and it became the best opening ceremony of any Olympics game ever

In my eyes, I find this ceremony is so iconic, peaceful & extremely beautiful. This is my opinion. others may find other countries Olympic open Ceremony is better. It is not a matter better or bad … but it just an opinion. Beauty lies in the eyes of the Beholder ❤

@@daeith1233 arguably almost any period during the 21st century is better than the post-2020 one. 2008 was bad for mortgages and the economy but nearly everything else had reasons for optimism.
