I had an impromptu meeting with Marty Raney the other day while he was filming not too far from me in Alaska. I got some real insight into the man who helps people sort out difficult problems on their off grid homesteads for the Discovery Channel TV show Homestead Rescue.
Now in its eleventh season, he and his crew have helped over 100 homesteads get back on their feet by helping them work through essential projects.
Stick around for the whole interview to hear insights on what it really takes to make an off-grid homestead successful, AND- the surprising moment that stopped our interview. PLUS, a never-before-heard song from Marty Raney debuts RIGHT HERE!

After I retired from the Air Force, I returned home to my family's neglected 130 acre farm in SW Michigan (my Dad passed and nothing was done beyond keeping animals fed for 10 years). When I moved home in 2020, I found Homestead Rescue and you guys are the roadmap to my recovery plan (the solar kiln for the black walnut slabs is going to happen out here). I'm telling you, Misty is my hero!! When I'm slinging chainsaws and bush hogging the back 40, I think Misty would be proud of me because anything that needs to be fixed (short of a mechanical tear down, I can change oil/tires, do breaks but never tore apart an engine)... I got this! Is it hard? Hell yeah... but I'm 51 and I'm doing it. I love you and your family, Marty!

Great interview Brooke. Your respect and admiration for Mr. Raney was apparent. Your interview style was respectful, and you actually allowed him to speak. Many interviewers tend to interrupt so often I find it distracting and disrespectful.

How old is he? Married? Great guy! I would if I could right now, two houses trying to move sell one. I would come to Alaska now, and be his house keeper, friend, partner. This is Barry. Hello Brooke. The timing of this video is perfect. After a couple years of thinking about and looking for a piece of land I took the first step over the weekend and bought a 30 acre plot in the UP of Michigan. It’s a beautiful piece of property with a four acre clearing on it. No utilities on the property so it will be up to me to supply the water and whatever power we will need. Discovering and watching your channel and Dave’s channel over the years has really inspired me. Meeting you both at the Bushcraft Gathering lit another fire for me. Step one has been taken. Once I close on the property in a couple weeks I’ll be going up there to start the process of picking a spot to build the cabin. It’s very exciting indeed.

OMG!!!! Love Marty & his family. I hope they bring back another season of The Ramey Ranch!!! I hated to see them loose their home. But was excited to see what was to come with the new homestead. His wife is a beautiful soul & is just as hard of a worker as Marty. She got the beauty & the brains…😉🤣. Just goes to show everyone even an experienced professional can have la life altering emergency . As a former FF it broke my heart to see his live feed asking for help. Ohio was just to far away. 😢. After a fire is all said & done. Looking back at those families then realizing there wasn’t much left to save for them is a deflating feeling. By the grace of God every fire we had at least 1 item was found that survived. An elderly ladies Great Grandmother’s cross was in a box inside her closet. The bedroom walls were destroyed & the floor wasn’t far behind. She was crying after it was all said & done & that was the ONLY thing she cared about. We found that cross inside her closet in that box. It had some smoke damage but was in in one piece. You would have thought I just handed her.a million dollars when I gave that cross to her. Made me even more of a believe in the man above. One of my best memories of my FF years. Thanks for sharing this awesome interview Beth!! ❤❤.

This was so interesting and inspiring. Follow your dreams people make your life count. I am nearly 80 and was caught in the dreams of the 60’s if we knew what was coming would we really have done different. Turn I wish into I will for the future. The dreams of the pioneers seemed impossible but they did it and now we take their hard work and dreams for granted.

Wow you and Marty just made my life better. I'm 69 1/2 years old and Thursday I'm going for some tests to find out if cancer has spread in my body. As you can see by my channel name I was going to start traveling and life happened. I have decided no matter what the outcome is I'm still gonna travel and video my travels and teach people how to cook in small spaces especially our veterans and our homeless there's no reason for them not to eat good food in small spaces instead of buying cheap take out food so if I pass away on a lonely road somewhere by myself fine I don't know if I have one year or six months or 20 more years I just wanna find out what I'm looking at and I will make my decision but you guys hit the nail straight on the head Just do the Darn Thing . Thank you again keep the great videos coming. God bless you and Marty and all your families and remember stay safe stay strong stay healthy God bless and enjoy life,✌👏🍳🎅🚌👍

I just found your youtube channel via your husband's. I must thank you for talking about the real world of how to use resources. I was taught to repurpose and reuse. It's so wonderful to see how you buy things at the Restore, thrift shops, etc. and only buy items when you must. I hope that a lot of younger people are subscribed and learn to live without credit and using what they have access to. Thanks, too, for praying before meals and praying for others. Also, I can't wait to find our more about Marty Raney. Just a side note. When I was teaching 1st grade, my students and I always buried the word can't. It wasn't a word used in the classroom. Hey Brooke! LOVED this interview with Marty. I always loved his show too. You made this additionally interesting with your experiences too, kudos to you all and keep up the good work. People can learn a lot from you on top of learning how someone without much can gain more knowledge by hearing what you all have done. Be blessed!

The awesome thing about approaching this life style is, even if u know nothing, it's exactly the same as "on the job training". Any one of us can become quite proficient at pretty much anything after six months or less, by simply learning on the job. Now-a-days with books, internet, family, or friends, there's absolutely no excuses for not going for it. Such a great example u r. 👍

Such a great interview Brook! Marty is a hero in my book . The interview seemingly turned into a round table conversation. The 2 of you have so much in common. So cool to see Marty light up when talking about the things that have inspired him . I wasn't surprised when he wanted to take you with him. I could tell he was as impressed with you as we all are of him. Thanks Brook for this it made my day.

Next, you're going to tell us he's your uncle and you learned everything from him, right? I'm just kidding. But it sounds like you two came from the same kin that's been living off the grid for the last 200 hundred years or more. You are both amazing people. Your interview was amazing, too. I really appreciate how you let him talk when he could and how you paused when he couldn't, such awesome respect. May God continue to bless you both.

I grew up on a small homestead, didn't pay much attention to what my Daddy was trying to teach me. Now at age 54 I am trying to relearn it all and we are planning on moving from the city to a small homestead. I learn so much from thr Raney family and channels like this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

How fun was that?! I kept telling my husband that Marty was the one that should feel blessed to have met you!! I don’t blame him for wanting to take you with him 😂! Homesteaders are the best, hardworking, loving folks! 👏 ❤ Love his show but I’ve learned a lot from your channel! 🙌

What an awesome video!!!! I have been following the Raneys on Homestead Rescue since it first aired, and followed him before that on Ultimate Survival Alaska!! I've even visited the homestead they helped in season 4, episode 3, "Shock and Awe." It was the show featuring Annie and Ricky Reathiford. It is now Annie's Pork-n-Bean, located in Del Rio, TN. I've been there twice and they're just as awesome as they were on the show, and the place is now a huge success! Marty is such a cool guy, and this interview was such a great colab for the two of you! You're like two peas in a pod, sharing the same drive, mind, and soul. Both you and your families are such an inspiration! ❤❤❤

Great reminder that if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other eventually you get where you want to go! On days where goals seem impossible, just don't give up! Thank you for the inspiration, it can be applied to anything someone is struggling with, not just homesteading. You are appreciated. God bless you for sharing.
