As a retired Firefighter who has witnessed the gridlock that happens when people panic, abandoning vehicles on the road needs to be addressed by communities in areas like this. Panic leads to loss of life and this sense of, I'm-more-important- than-you mentality. We've seen this happen before in Paradise, California and it's something that has to be resolved by having options and through educating people. It's putting Firefighters at risk and preventing Fire Apparatus from accessing the fire scene. Hopefully some changes will come out of this.

Yeah that's if the insurance companies will even provide fire coverage or deny it due to the area being fire prone. CDI mandates have forced insurance companies to have fire coverage but have also caused a lot of insurance providers to leave California. Last I checked in my area there was one provider of insurance that had fire coverage. The cost of said insurance was egregious, though.

Dear, they're not attempting to put out the flames because there has to be a source for water. These are structures that have already been destroyed. The job is to protect the homes that are still intact from burning. When you are pumping water at 100 psi or more, you are depleting your supply on board. That's why the job is concentrated on "containment" and then extinguishing. Hand crews and bulldozers work on containing the fire by cutting a break around it to stop spreading. Aircraft can only be deployed in daylight so, the priority is to protect your exposures. I need to say this because frankly, you don't know what you're talking about and it's giving people the impression that firefighters "give up" on the fight. You have to understand that CalFire and other fire agencies in areas like this know what they are doing and prepare for exactly this type of battle all the time. The scene you are reporting on doesn't really depict the actual battle because you would never be allowed access because of concern for your safety but, trust me when I say that firefighters and firefighting by it's very nature has nothing to do with giving up. Also, you know nothing about the Santa Ana winds that are treacherous this time of year. Again, you can't come into a situation where fire has swept through with the force and speed as this and destroyed homes and accomplish victory. The focus is to protect those homes in the path of the fire and containment. I will also add that people living in Malibu and the wooded canyons and mountains are fully aware of the need to be vigilant and prepared. They can either remove the fuel around their homes or ignore it but, you can't be surprised when something like this happens just like you can't be surprised when you live near a earthquake fault and the ground beneath you opens up and swallows your home. EVERY ONE OF THESE FIREFIGHTERS ARE DEDICATED HEROES WHO RISK THEIR LIVES IN THESE SITUATIONS AND THEY NEVER GIVE UP OR SURRENDER JUST BECAUSE THE FIGHT BECOMES DIFFICULT.

There should be a degree on Fire Spoter. The Fire Spoters should be spread on a large area with communication equipment. The moment they detect a fire, the spot will be hit hard with water/chemicals. We have to have this specialty, and respected as a profession.
