Some rifle barrels are made to ever so slightly squeeze the bullet as It exits and the twist rate can change. It's very common in high accuracy air rifle barrels and some other barrels but it requires cold hammer forging. Kind of surprised they could not find a way to lap the bore to make it bigger like running a button though it then drilling another button and lapping. I have heard of people shooting S 8mm Mauser in a 1888 chambered for 88 (the bore on the 88 is smaller). But it's possible they just resized bullets and necked down cartridges they already had for millitias or people who don't realy need a rifle, if the barrel was removed it could easily be rechambered in 7.62x54r, not sure how much of the chamber you would have to cut off but not that much. I have saved a few .303 rifles with lead errosion by conversing them to 54r (same bore) and a chamber insert for a 7.7mm Arisaka in 7.62x39 (same bore) Usualy if you have rifles you can't rechamber, have ammo for or sell, many will have the barrels drilled out and be converted into something like a .410 shotgun. Very common on black powder cartridge rifles but they did it to worn out lees also. That or use them as drill rifles.

Kind of how some people "reworked" Captured Arisaka Rifles into .30-06.

Most Arisakas, (especially 7.7 models), immensely strong actions can safely handle rechambering into US 30.06. Kinda pushing it a bit, though...😳

I bet they were making their own cartridges the supply of which is LONG GONE FORGOTTEN AND EXTINCT. with a 8x50 cartridge case except necked down to 7.62 and seated with a regular bullet resembling the original 7.62 one but with a round nose because the austro Hungarians tended to use round nose bullets it'd be 7.62x50. And probably would pretty good for accuracy ..like target or high accuracy load 7.62x54 meant for excellent groups. at the expense of a slightly reduced powder charge compared to the typical 54r powder charge..you might be able to find a single round someplace that specializes in rare ammunition probably wrongly categorized as a steyr manlincher round if you want to fire it. You could take a chamber cast of the barrel and send it to a place called buffalo arms that makes unusual and out of production caliber ammo and brass

I would bet there are a bunch of these out there(in yhe U.S.) that people think are just some random mosin. They probably think its still 7.62x54r and is very sticky and not very accurate. With the 8x50r rifles I believe you can shoot and fire form from 7.62x54r but you dont get any rifling engagement. Lol. Im so Adhd that i interrupted my video to type this and right after you mentioned this. Sorry Big Sam! Thank you

Random question: can a Mosin Nagant explode? If so under what conditions? Like I mean catastrophic failure where the gun exploding could be potentially fatal? I’m curious because I’m a little shy of Mosins for no particular reason, just nervous.

Did they modify the magazine to accept en bloc clips? Or did they just issue the ammo on Russian charger clips?
@justacentrist4147

Probably just issued the ammo the same way they did to everyone and they just had to single feed the shells into the mag . These rifles were mostly used to free up standard rifles for the front. You can see images of real time Austrian troops with mosins like rail way guards, prison guards, etc...
