Rob, i just got my new nox xc trail with the Sachs rs motor with 112 Nm at low cadence . i have a cube with a bosch cx and was convinced it was the king of climbers until ,,,,, . i took the sachs up the same steep hills i usually ride and was traveling twice as fast at half the cadence in the third assist level ( it has four ). The sachs is insanely powerful and very well built . it's heavy with metal gears and casing . built to last .

Fine , but are we comparing apples to apples here? Torque and power output have a lot to do with voltage, current and gearing. First are the gear ratios identical? Second what is the measured voltage of the two batteries? Third, what is the current out put of the two batteries? If one has a 30Amp BMS and the other has a 40Amp BMS then that is not equal. Software may be another factor. You are using the pedal assist on both bikes which may not be equal. I would turn off the pedal assist and do a throttle only run and then a throttle run with you pedalling. Keep the pedal assist and its torque sensor turn off. My cheap Cyclone motor with a 48V 40A BMS will usually try to wheely over backwards on steep hills and will only stall the BMS after long extremely steep sections that are pretty much unridable to begin with. Your test is not very scientific and needs to be redone. The rated torque of these motors is also a product of their internal gear reduction. We all want to see what the best kit is but you have to be fair with your testing and I think you have not proven that.

Nm are not power. All that matters in the end is mechanical power, measured in Watts. Nm at the wheel can be levered with gearing. it seems the M500 has a 15A controller @43V that is slightly less power than the bosch cx (36V 20A). I don't know how many amps the 48v bafang controller can pull, but most likely less than 15A, since the motor can only handle a certain amount of power before overheating.

Rob....appreciate all you do on your channel. Man, you had me there for a moment, then I realized you were missing some very important variables. 42t 10spd vs 52t 12spd rear cassette and probably even more unfair in the front. The reality is battery voltage on the bafang is a game-changer. My Ultra motor is great at 48v, but is a whole different beast at 52v. My personal 52v Juggernaut Ultra FS, even with the Manitou mastodon and DT swiss BR2250 upgrades is half the cost of the Trek Rail. Yes it's 18lbs heavier, but it also has 4.8" surley tires, 160nm of torque, floats on snow and sand, climbs up a tree, and never ceases to bring smiles to myself or anyone that tries it for 5 minutes. Keep the snobby bosch, I guess I'm just bike trash.😁🤣

The vague title of the video already made me suspicious that the true winner would be the Bosch in the end. :-D Honestly, i think its really time to take the Bafang M500 into a testlab for some detailed measurements. I suspect that neither the original M500 nor the improved one they send you is actually capable of reaching 95nm of torque. While i admit that Bafang may still be dealing with a poorly written firmware here, i rather suspect that the M500 is actually a 75 to 80 nm motor. I would really like to see how it compares to a Shimano E8000 with 75nm. I have a certain feeling both will be pretty much eye to eye rather than Bafang ending up as the winner. Now im not saying the words "advertisement scam" here just yet. But...... ;-)

You probably thought of that in trying to compare the motors, but if they aren't, ie the bikes don't have the same ring size on the crank, or they don't have the same sprocket size on the casset, then the climb test is comparing apples with oranges.

I understand this is a straight torque test but it would be great to know how the motor efficiency stacks up. Those Watt Hours in our battaries are heavy and dictate how long our day out is, for me I want to know I'm getting the most out of it, not just getting max power at any point. I only want enough power and good/best efficiency. If the Bafang is using more juice and being less powerful thats bad, but if its almost keeping up and using significantly less juice then brilliant.

The secret is upping the voltage to arround 50v & patiently searching the web for the punch code to get rid of the rev limit. You see all these mid motors That have 80 or 90nm + are actually a lot stronger than 250w. You see with these motors, torque outputs stay the same regardless of revs (I’m disregarding torque multiplication from gearing, much of which is cancelled out by having a wheel of 26” to 29” anyway), but to get that sort of torque, they’re really motors that will sustain 600 to 800 watts. Then they apply a revlimiter to make sure they won’t sustain more than about 300w - Keeping them close to or plausibly legal while getting the torque figures of a motor twice as powerful. Cheating the speed limiter by moving the speed detector from the wheel to the crank or using a tuning chip may increase speed, but not when you really want it, going up steep hills, which is what e-assistance is all about. So if you really want to get the best performance you have to get a punch code or a tuner chip that releases the motor from it's built in revlimiter. Also upping the voltage from arround 40v to 50v helps stopping it get to hot as less amps are needed for the same watts.

None of these are close to 250 W. They all put out over 800 W maximum. The Bosch, Brose, and my EU legal Bafang M600s consume over 1 kW at max. But they are somehow still nominal 250W. And Nominal, what ever that means, is the key to keep it legal.

As a Bafang M620 and Bosch Gen 4. owner I can point out a few facts: M600 is the lowest spec'd Bafang you should consider Watt-wise. 250W Bafang motors are better only if you're DIY'ing your entire build. Compared to the M500 Bosch Gen 4. is much quieter, draws less power and has a much more soft assistance whilst still having more real world power. These Bafang motors are a great choice but only if you want to go over 250W and are able to DIY and know how to service these motors. Many countries have already/are legalizing 1000W motors. M620 is a good choice on that respect.

So basically: Ya-get-what-ya-can-pay. And going uphill depends on a few factors(not just a fanciful video): The charge of the battery, the weather, is the soil wet/dry, or soft/hard? Your bodyweight? If over 220 pounds, e-bikes are gonna give ya very minimal assist up a hill in turbo-mode. Lastly, the physical shape you are in. I find the Yamaha PW-X2, to get me up any steep incline & home in any weather, with (so-far), minimal problems(forgetting to re-charge). Most bike reviews are about giving a product decent review, to keep-on getting stuff to review. Trusting social media for products, is ill-advised.

I think its something to do with the seat tube angle. Chinese carbon frames have a fairly slack seat tube angle. That is why whenever I borrow my friends ebike with exactly the same motor. I always move the seat forward to steepen the seat tube angle which helps smoothen up the climb.

I can’t understand why anything over 85nm is needed, my cube with a Bosch 85nm can climb anything if I can stay on it without sliding off the back, and it will hit the 15mph speed limit with ease. Seems a bit pointless to me. Same with batteries, how big do you need, once you can get 50miles like mine can having much more really is a bit pointless, at what point do you just pedal a bit more. What’s needed are less gears and more robust drive trains and brakes pads which last longer than a few hundred miles.

I had Bafang M500 for about two years, firts one lasted 800km. It is not that smooth as Bosh CX or Yamaha ST at all, in my opinion is not as powerfull as these two. I bought new bike with yamaha and this motor is miles away ahead. Bafang is good for money but no better than competitors.

The price to performance is garbage on bike parts, especially frames and motors. I went and looked for similar alternatives to bike motors/ frames and found that you can get minibike frames for around 200$ but a simple steel bicycle frame cost over 8003, when I checked motors I could find the same spec motors in a conversion kit for scooters/mopeds for around 150$. I will let them get away with a overpriced motor since they went full custom but I can't excuse the frames being stupidly expensive, they are not a complex part and they are very easy to streamline and automate.

I wish you still had the CHEEB so that the hill climb could be retested. Based on your build video and photos on emtb, it looks like the Trek Rail 5 had a gearing advantage of anywhere from 9% to 13%... No wonder it beat out the CHEEB/Bafang.

The bigPROBLEM with Proprietary Systems like the Bosch motor is that they require a proprietary battery (usually cost 50-60% more) and the Bosch motor (with a chip) will not work without a Bosch battery (with the same chip).. the motor and the chip talk to each other.. bigQUESTION... what happens when bosch decides they are no longer going to do ebike systems...? What happens if they are sued out of business like Bionx when GE sued them over breach of contract..? Now anyone with a Bionix motor that needs a replacement batter is out of luck... the motor is no good without the proprietary battery... I like the non-proprietary systems like Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD.. You can always find parts, and you can always find a downtube battery that will work.. And they are 1/3 the cost of the Bosch...

THE BAFANG issue is the fact YOU can't even peform a crankFlip Because of the resitance of the bearings when back peddling. It pisses me off I like to do little tricks before riding to get warmed up and my Tuned M600 can't sping backwards fast enough to do a crank flip.

Can you get rid of the crappy M500 and compare the Bosch to the BBSHD with 1kw nominal, 1.5kw peak and 160nm torque? My BBSHD will keep the power output pinned at 1500 watts if I keep the throttle mashed.

One thing I don't like about these videos is they compare the rolls royce of a motor against the Jaguar of motors, what thje need to compare is facts it is very hard to buy a Bosch kit as their motors you get if you buy a bike and are not D.I.Y kits and price are 3 times that of a Bafang. The cheapest eBike with a Bosch motor brand new is £1,800 and you can buy the same cycle without a motor fitted for £300 and a Bafang motor for £420 or even a little less. So you have £720 to £1,800 I would not expect any comparrison that is why their is a market for ready mady cycles with fitted motors but here they are hard to get and the cheapest competible bike for me is over £3,000 otherwise I would have to wait upto a year for a £1,800 in my sizw or buy second hand. The Benefits for kits you get the right size cycle and withing a week you have an electric bike for under a £1,000, otherwise you can wait upto a year and buy one your size for £1,800 or get one your size for over £3,000 withing a day. Most mid drive motor cycles for sale right away are 46cm frames and they only have them available because there is very few small adults so really how can you destroy something that is cheaper, quicker to buy for a fraction of the price? I would of been shocked if the Bafang motor out did the Bosch motor because the price difference is tremendous over double the price.

What's the sealing like around the crank shaft? Bafang mounts the controller directly to the engine cover, and the seal around the cranshaft is essentially a dust cover. Any idea how well the sealing is on the motor, as water intrusion is the biggest problem for all ebike motors.?

This dude keeps saying power and than says motor's torque. Nm is a unit of torque. With some gearing you can achieve pretty much any torque, specially with a mid drive. But what's the power of those engines? *Powerful motor* yet no mention of actual power. This is stupid.
@nihilisticsoup2919
@nihilisticsoup2919 Жыл бұрын
Car torque nm ratings might be vastly smaller but cars don't need to produce much torque because the engine spins at 7000-12000 rpm which produces huge horsepower, and low torque can be mitigated with gearing. Tons of torque is useful for tractors but race vehicles need tons of horsepower not torque.

I know I'm going to stir up a hornets nest here, commenting out of context, and admitting to be Old School....But why not shave off a few kilos and a few thousand dollars. And get a bike without a motor and use good old muscle power. After a few tries you'd probably make it up the hill trading off the extra the weight for a higher level of fitness! I did the electric bike thing a number of years ago. But once the novelty wore off. I was back to Pure Pedal Power......

I hat the two motors, After seeing your video, several of us think that your technique with the bafang is poor, first of all it is not climbing with maximum power, the torque works differently and I have achieved much harder slopes. Your test is poor and misdirected.

I understand that torque is paramount in hill climbing, but does that justify calling newton-meters "power" when it is really torque, which can be multiplied by gearing?
