Brad Roper is the man! He gave me a lot of advice on my new Polini Thor 202. Now at 120 hours in 1.5 years! One thing to know: CHANGE YOUR BATTERY in the GP4 every 50 hours. After that, the temperatures reported are artificially increased by 20-30ºC (68-86ºF). I was freaking out when my coolant temps hit 108ºC (way higher than boiling). But then the battery died (GP4 reboot loop). When I replaced the battery? 70-75ºC for the entire flight. I thought my big ass head and shoulders were messing up the airflow! Nope, all good. Sorry about losing your throttle on your first flight! That sucks. I always loop the throttle cable over my forearm so the cable is on the inside of my arm at the throttle to try to prevent (or reduce the chances of) the cable from going through the cage/net and into the prop. Not sure if that would have helped you. I love the Polini Thor 202!!! I weigh 2-3x what you do (265lbs) and 6'4" so I need a lot more power. OK I want a lot more power. And the price is the same as a Moster 185, and the MTBO is 300 hours, vs the Moster's 150 hours. Plus I have found I get WAY better fuel economy, 3-4 liters per hour vs 6 liters per hour on the Moster 185. I think you'll love it for many hours. Just make sure to feed it premium non-ethanol 93 octane gas! It can be a bit of a pain to find, but after 120 hours, no burned up cylinders.

9:30 No, it is not your fault that the Macfly netting is loose. It may appear radical yes, but it is likely the most dangerous netting on the market. All other manufacturers do no not only use more dense mesh, but they also tie the strings together at the crossing points so that it is actually a net and the lines can't slip past each other. Macfly just has individual strings attached, which do bend away when object comes to contact. Macfly has certainly made interesting design choices, given that netting has really only one reason to exist: to not let stuff pass through it.

The throttle linearity doesnt come from it being a float bowl. Its due to it being a slide carb, which are constant velocity/variable volume. Intake air velocity remains constant regardless of throttle position which allows for more ideal fuel/air mixing. As well as a tapered, varying needle to meter fuel more linearly throughout slide position/varying volume. It just so happens that most CV carbs have float bowl fuel demand chambers. As opposed to "butterfly" carbs like the Walbros etc. where intake velocity as well as volume varies depending on throttle position and fuel metering is essentially fixed. Most tend to differentiate the 2 common styles as "diaphragm" and "float bowl". This is improper. They should be differentiated by "slide" vs "butterfly" carb. The type of fuel demand chamber/pump really isnt what differentiates them in terms of performance etc.. Rather its the method in which air/fuel is variated.

Even with the experience you have there's always room to learn something new, Jud. I was trained by Danielo of Staybad to always wrap your throttle cable around your arm. You definitely need to preach that more in your training. Glad you're safe man.

Hey man a really good tip is to install a bungee cord from the middle of the throttle cable to somewhere on the harness. I snapped it up on one of oglees videos years ago. Doesnt limit your armtravel but makes it impossible for the cable to hit the prop.

Judson something to bate in mind if you do a sat it will draw all the fuel out of the fuel lines and will be a pain in the ass to start so just take it in to consideration also when doing acro keep a little bit of throttle to keep the fuel flowing

I foot launch the 202 and have treated it well and therefore it has treated me well. I'm burning about 3.3 to 3.5/hr at about 120 kg all up, with a Nuc 22 and Uni 28 respectively, 140 cm prop 1) It's a bit rich from the factory, several have had good luck running 100LL and dropping the main by a lot, start at the middle clip that controls the mid range 2) Change the gear box oil often, I have changed it every 5 hrs since new, I would highly recommend at most 10 hrs, it just gets so dirty being wet clutch 3) I swapped to a Keihin PWK carb and professionally tuned it using a lambda sensor, absolutely smooth from idle to WOT, covers -1000 to 8000 ft density-altitude 4) Get an EGT reader, it's a K-type or get any paramotor display with a thermocouple input 5) Stoichiometric (perfect air fuel ratio) is approximately 700C, hotter is leaner, I run 93 pump gas with boostane to get 100 octane. Also, if you're wayyy too rich it'll read over 700C (excess fuel burning in the exhaust port, heating up the EGT sensor

Well, welcome to the "tuning" community LOL Judson! I saw Ken's comment below and I agree with him 💯%.That Keihin PWK carb he uses is very similar to the carbs used in the Power sports industry, on ATVs, etc. so it is a champ at working in every angle and can take being slapped around, like on a supercross track for example or catwalking at 12 o'clock and on and on. The Japanese make/use the finest related components IMO. Remember that warm-ups are pretty important with water cooled units, you don't want a cold-seizure to occur. Anyhow, that is a SWEET Macfly... I'll be ordering one from you guys in the near future. I have about 30lbs more to drop... oh, BTW, where's that BUS?? Can't wait to see it when it's done. Hell of a build out from what I saw a month or 2 back on the vid. Ok, I'm done rambling. Be safe and congrats on that upgrade to W/C unit.

Howzit Judson i fly a 202 out here in South Africa and i fly a 122 Jet at 5500 feat and the same jet at sea level therefore eliminating the need to change jets all the time so it runs slightly rich at altitude but still very responsive and gets full RPM at altitude Welcome to the dark side!

Great video Judson I love you, no hate, but I wish you had done something a little bit more click baity/attention grabby to retain the attention of the new audience you gained from the burning man video. This is your time to do your equivalent of Tucker's "flying to mcdonalds on my paramotor" video. You could bring a lot of new people into the sport.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t just shorten the throttle?

Polini throttle cable isn't universal, they probably only had a longer one with the correct termination to work with the throttle slide in the carb.
