Lol I’ve never wanted daughters before watching this movie and now I have my fingers crossed! A classic story that shows that with family by your side and a little imagination you can get through anything!

08:56 The pump hasn't been used in years, so it's dry up top. You have to put some water in to get it to pull the well water up. Ever heard the phrase _priming the pump?_ That's where it comes from.

Most of the other anime reactors do not understand the subtle implies and signs in this movie, but you surely did get them! I'm really impressed and enjoyed your reaction! And yes, it's always fun to watch male reactors all related to KANTA's feeling.

If you really think this film is good, I urge you to watch it again with the original Japanese audio (English subtitles). 33:16 ★The dialogue here is not in the original and was added in the American version. When I first saw the English dubbed version, I felt sad and angry. In the original version, it delicately conveys how a 12-year-old girl tries her best to take care of her younger sister as a mother figure, but her feelings are torn apart. Yet, in the English dub, she is represented as a mean older sister who just scolds her younger sister. I was really sad because I like Satsuki

You should watch Ponyo (Or Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea). It has similiar vibes to My Neighbor Totoro being a feel good-movie, though it have more of story to it. It is heavy inspired by The Little Mermaid (both the Disney animated movie and the Hans Christian Andersen tale) and is about a goldfish girl named Ponyo who meets and falls in love with the five-year old Sosuke and in order to become human, she uses her dad's potions but she inadvertily causes to throw nature out of balance so she and Sosuke have to prove their love for each other in order to set things right and to make Ponyo to stay human forever. Other Ghibli pictures I recommend are Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, Howl's Moving Castle and especially Spirited Away, which won an Academy Award for Best Foreing Film, which brought attention to anime around the world (including my home country Sweden where up until that point anime was most known for Sailor Moon and Pokémon with Dragon Ball being released as a Manga).

This movie is based on director Hayao Miyazaki's childhood when he and his brother moved to the countryside to be near the hospital where his mom was, as she had spinal tuberculosis. While it's not stated in the movie it is presumed that Mrs. Kusakabe has spinal tuberculosis as well. Most of the expericences that he and his younger brother had during at that time was inspired into Satsuki and Mei's experiences. He have stated that if the main characters were boys it'd been too much for him. Kanta is based heavily on Miyazaki himself including his love for comics and model airplanes. Originally there was just going to be one girl (as seen in the poster where she is posed at the bus stop with Totoro) but when it came to the third act, it was hard to come up anything dramatic so she was split into Satsuki and Mei, hence why Satsuki have a boy's haircut and Mei have pigtails, as the prototype Satsuki had pigtails on the poster (probably the reason Satsuki carries Mei behind her in that scene is to "match" with the poster, though the pigtails doesn't stick out to complete the illusion ).

There is a rumor on the Internet that the kodama in the last scene of Princess Mononoke became Totoro hundreds of years later.

Honestly, just watch all of Miyazaki's films, from Nausicaa and the birth of studio Ghibli, to his latest and likely last film, The Boy and the Heron, he delivers amazing works of art!

You are right. The Susuwatari (soot sprites) were from this movie and then used again in Spirited Away. To me, this movie is part of a series of movies that are loosely connected. They are all based in the same part of Japan. Tonari no Tototro shows how it was before development. Pom Poko shows how it gets developed. Whisper of the Heart takes place in a similar location after development. And The Cat Returns is based on a story written by a character in Whisper of the Heart. They don't have to be watched as a series, but I feel they speak stronger if you do. I have introduced so many kids to this movie. So beautiful. So many layers of culture. In my office I have two plush Totoros and a Tototro clock. Plus stuff from Princess Mononoke.

Thank you! I just took the names of all the movies down. Studio Ghibli hit me with a copyright strike recently so I haven’t been reacting to their movies, but I hope to get back to them soon as I’ve loved all I’ve seen so far!

@@JustAGuyReacts Not sure if it makes a difference if you do the Dubbed versions (most of them are through Disney) or subtitled (which should be through Ghibli itself). Just be careful. Nausicaa, one of my favorite Miyazaki movies (technically pre-Ghibli), was first dubbed so horribly, Miyazaki swore NEVER to let his movies be dubbed again. It took Disney to convince him to reconsider and they gave him FULL final approval on everything. Nausicaa (both manga and original anime) is amazing. But the first dubbed version was a disaster. Bet little copyright limits on THAT piece of...
