Loved the affection you show your wife Ben. It is so important for children to see positive interaction between parents. Raise them up in the way they should go...
@heatherd.9390 Жыл бұрын
I love this comment and I couldn't agree more! The greatest gift we can give our children is for the parents to show respect, admiration and love towards one another. It teaches them how to treat their spouse and how to expect to be treated. This sounds a bit odd coming from me because I've been a single parent since my daughter was one year old. However, my marriage turned very abusive after she was born, both physically and psychologically. I decided, at the point when I left, that she was better off having one parent that showed HER respect, admiration and love than to be in the middle of something where one was abusive and the other (me) was constantly walking on egg shells and in constant fear. It's not been easy being a single parent, especially since I had a spine/cord injury about 10 years ago. However, if I may say so myself, I am blessed to be able to say that she has turned out to be a very empathetic, hard working, kind, generous, smart young lady. Heather🇨🇦

@@heatherd.9390 I'm so glad you made the right choice! I know it's hard to leave but it is so much better to get away! My story is similar. Once I had my child, things got a lot worse quick. My child is also so wonderful and makes me so happy I left everyday. We are so blessed! I feel for the ladies that don't get away!

So many things to love about this video...a family working together, one of your older sons contemplating taking a bite of something, your other son making faces and Ben and Meg having a smooch before supper. I'm fixing chili for supper tonight also. I don't have a farm, so I don't have my own meat, but I do have meat & beans that I've canned and tomatoes that I've canned from my garden. That always makes me feel good.

Nice job grading that area. Since you plan on keeping pigs in there, maybe leave the bottom of the trees for scratching posts. I bet they’d like those kiddie pools too. And those bricks would make great bottoms for their little huts, keeping the hay/wood chips from being pushed down in the mud. I was also thinking a retaining wall with a French drain at the top would keep the runoff from the field behind it from flooding out the pen. We did that by a built-in swimming pool one time. Ouch! Try some aloe on Meg’s shoulders Ben! We always kept the super hot spices on the table so everyone could add however much they wanted. Same for chopped raw onion, salt & pepper, bread & butter…Mom loved her lazy susan lol. ✌🏻

Great idea to start a carport pen to raise pigs in. Nice job using the tractor to move those big blocks! I'm so glad all the boys helped you do that. Wow, that worked nifty to pull the t-posts up with the tractor too! You're right Ben, the pigs need a wallow! That pen does look so much better re-graded. I love making chili! It's great to freeze and re-heat for dinner! That's great that you grew everything for it from your homestead and beef from friends. Take a bow guys! That chili looks soooo good! You've got a rosemary bush for your herb garden. I think chili gets better the next night. We just got up to 70F degrees here in Minnesota and our boys are complaining about how hot the house is! Your pig carport idea would be great to start implementing this winter with your cow, the same was Justin Rhodes does. First put her in there, covering her poop with wood chips and corn, and then in the spring when you bring her out onto the new grass you could put your piglets in there to turn the woodchips whilst searching for the corn and finish making them into compost. As long as you harvest them/move them on in the fall before the cow needs the area back, it could be a very effective set up. With the added bonus that you have a lot of compost ready to top dress the beds at the end of the season, ready to put them to bed over the winter.

@AB-ol5uz Жыл бұрын
if you've seen Justin Rhodes channel - it's the equivalent of wintering the pigs/cows in the open sided barn. Every day they layer in fresh hair/wood chips to absorb the urine/waste and in prior years put corn in dfferent levels so that when the cows came out, they could put pigs in there to root up and turn everything into compost that much faster.

When I was a kid in 60's. My dad raised pigs. We got them the 1st of April. Butchered them labor day. We had about 1 1/2 acres fenced for them. It was a section of land of our 5 acres that was flat land up at the top of the draw. And went down to a year round creek. The water went through the pen. So it kept the water clean. But they could lay in it and play. Which the pigs and us kids did play in it. They had lots of grass and one corner of the area was their bathroom area. As long as you didn't go in that section you never had to worry about stepping in poo. Dad made them a 3 sided pig house with a roof that was made out of corrugated tin. And was filled with straw. Many was a time I'd go in there and take a nap with the pigs. It was super clean in there. I have a problem seeing pigs having to live in their filth. Pigs don't want to live like that. Yes, they wallow in mud. But they don't want to in their poo. Pigs are smart animals. Just as smart as dogs. Maybe even smarter. I hope you continue to give your pigs room to be happy pigs. 🐽🐷🐖

Physics teacher again. You're familiar with how the blue light in the sun scatters to cover the sky making the sky blue. Well the UV scatters before the blue so it, too is spread across the sky. If you can see the sky, you can get sunburnt. Just like with the visible light, the UV is strongest in the direct rays of the sun, but you can get burnt in the shade. Also FYI when the sun is low to the horizon the light passes through thicker layers of air and the other colors begin to scatter; violet first then blue, green, yellow, orange, red (in the mountains the sky looks violet because there isn't enough air to scatter the blue yet - but look into the valley. the blue "haze" you see is the blue light scattering out as it passes through more air.)

Maybe some awning for the windows and open everything at night, knowing that the colder it is, the more comfortable the next day will be inside. I close everything up in the morning and it gets me through the hottest part of the day, then open everything up for fresh air in the afternoon when the inside and outside temperature is the same. Blinds also help with keeping the house insulated.

In order to save the one tree that’s left alive in the pig area, put 3 of those green and white metal posts in a triangle around it and wrap it with chicken wire, i.e. poultry netting. That will keep the pigs away from the park and they won’t ring that one. The posts will keep a little space between the trunk of the tree and the chicken wire so that the chicken wire itself doesn’t girdle the tree.

When I was a kid and we went to visit my grandparents in Puerto Rico they had a very neat system. They had a cement in ground pool my grandfather made and it always had about 2 feet of water in it. The pigs were always in it cooling off. It was always clean and he would hose it 3 times a day. The water went down the hill on the dirt. Puerto Rico is about 80 degrees at 7 am. Pigs were never sick.

I caved Tuesday it was 84-5 and it’s always hot in the house, breezes don’t come thru unless it’s really blowing hard outside. So the kicker for turning it on was when I saw my medium length hair cat taking over her short haired sibling brother’s place on the back of the recliner in front of the fan! She was just so miserable and that fan made her so happy that she fell asleep for a while. Brother just looked at her, and went to lay on a towel where he still caught the fans air and the ceiling fan. On came the AC if we were all that miserable with the storm front that was coming thru N Alabama Wednesday night… it wasn’t a cold level but just enough to blow the hot air out and then turned it off again Wednesday. Then last night I turned the heat back on!😂. I really love the mid-upper 70s days and upper 50s at night then the windows stay open!! Next week will be in that range, so heat a little longer until Wednesday. This summer we’ll wish for these cooler days.

Watching some of your old videos made me think of a couple of things. As you plan for spring, don't forget the success you had with planting random things around the trees in your orchard. Couple this with the success you had with the weird squash (sounded something like jacuzzi) grown for fodder. And related to growing feed, it seems like you have the best capacity with pigs and chickens if you'd use vermiculture of some kind. Lots of protein in bugs and it usually protein you pay for with feed. I don't know what critters grow down there but black flies or mealworms or just red wigglers. Anyway, I thought you guys needed more to think about.

Hey there. living in tree growing area. The pine trees planted for growth- has to be in area that does not hold flood water but a short peroid of time. Land I own to grow trees-if it floods I plant hardwood. The higher ground gets pine trees. If it is flooded to long neither pine or hardwood will grow but will die. Beavers flood areas is example- they kill all the timber land. That is reason forresters have to monitor land to get rid of beavers and drain the land. Have a good day. I love yall. Dewayne Willis

Ben, would a large heavy duty cloth tarp that is water proof work for the pig project? You could use the dead trees minus the branches as your poles. Just a thought!!! Meg, after a long day cutting grass with a push mower, and weed whacking. I found myself not wanting to fry chicken tenders. So, I decided to make your hot pockets with the chicken. Instead of using mayo, I used cream cheese as you suggested (it needed to be gone soon), a little milk, green pepper, green onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mixed it up, and used dough I made for pizza (out of the freezer). The pockets disappeared fast from the baking sheet, only 1 left. I served it up with fresh cut fruit. Thank you for sharing your recipes.❤
