I took a look at cheap laptop prices from a few years ago and the machines have indeed improved more than most of us remember, but imagine how much better they might be if the shortages weren't happening. If RAM prices hadn't went through the roof, machines at this price would now come with 16GB of RAM and at least a 250GB SSD. New CPU's are still great, but no one in the productivity market has needed better CPU's for a decade; heck, I'm writing this on a 2012 laptop that does just fine with anything that a student might need, though obviously not everything they'd want ;). This machine came with 4GB of dual-slot expandable RAM, which I upgraded to 16GB many years ago. Today, 4GB of RAM soldered to the board with no expansion slots is a crime that quickly dooms the machine to the trash heap. What a waste.
@EmblemParade3 жыл бұрын
For sure. Not only have CPUs improved dramatically but also iGPUs. You can have so much fun with these machines! (LowSpecGamer represent.) But I do think 4GB will make Windows super duper sluggish and unpleasant. Without a doubt a lightweight Linux-based OS is the way to go.

@@antibrevity In a decade? I think that is pushing it. A decade ago laptops were slow and your 2012 laptop is also pretty slow I would imagine. The 2012 laptops which were good are 2620QM laptops which are quite large and eat a ton of power. I write this from a 2021 Surface Laptop 4 AMD with 8C 16T and unfortunately soldered memory. However the reason so much memory is soldered these days is due to LPDDR4X which is part of how there is such good GPU performance. I think that DDR5 might eliminate some soldered memory as DDR5 is alot like LPDDR4X from what I have seen thus far. Higher speeds with much worse timings and lower voltage. Also the amount of power used for the same amount of performance has shrunk significantly; my 140W 6C Phenom II gets utterly destroyed by the 15W 4890U in this Surface... the 3900x in my workstation sends the Phenom II to another dimension. The same can be said even about Haswell parts which are from 8 years ago now... 4770k can't hold its own to 1/3 of my 3900x despite using more power than the 3900x and that CPU is already 2 years old now. The amount of performance available today is literally astounding and the average person can get away with something with low specs like this laptop. 11th Gen in a basic laptop is pretty incredible, it is funny to see that Intel has now taken the budget market as AMD has pulled back from that market due to extreme demand for its higher end chips. The budget market only gets Zen / Zen+ 14/12nm silicon because they cannot spare wafers to make budget chips like this i3 when they have limited capacity. Since Intel is selling nothing in the high end because of poor performance and power characteristics; these cheap laptops can now have actually modern CPU's that are quite fast even if they are not so power efficient.

If you take PCSX2 for example (which i believe is the heaviest emulator used in the video), the first version supporting Vulkan, which i believe that is Nightly 1.7.2521, cannot run Need For Speed Most Wanted in playable performance (a heavy game to the emulator). But, the version Nightly 1.7.3915, which i'm using now, can run the game in 2x PS2 resolution. So, the difference between then is brutal, and you can test for yourself...

I got a good deal on a dell laptop with this chip like weeks after they hit the market last fall (fall 2020). It was pretty amazing performance with dual channel DDR4 3200. These chips natively support ddr4 3200 so make sure the laptop you get is using that, some of the budget models i have seen running tiger lake chips were using older ddr4 2400. Just general gaming performance was better than the overclocked GT 730 GDDR5 I have been using for quit awhile now.

I have what is today considered to be a VERY low-end computer. It's a 2.4Ghz Core-2-Duo with a GT430 graphics card. I just loaded up Chains of Olympus in PPSSPP 1.8.0 (last one I can run) and set it to 3x resolution. I'll admit that I did have some pretty bad stuttering in a few spots where it dipped down to 30FPS or so, but for the most part, I was getting above 50FPS, including during that fight at the start that everyone shows.If I drop it down to 2x, it runs great. Even at 3x, the stutters weren't frequent enough to ruin the game. It was mostly when something big happened. Even during boss fights, like with the Persian and the sea creature, I was getting around 55FPS most of the time. I thought this was a hard game to emulate? How can my under-powered system that's now more than a decade old, run this game at mostly 50-60FPS on a cheap video card if even an i3 struggles to run it?
@DoctorWhom3 жыл бұрын
I re-watched the section at around 4:09, most of the stuff covered on this channel has a lower TDP, or Thermal Design Power. it might not be the best number to look at, but its a good start. If it's a desktop its 65w for the CPU, and 49w for the GPU. "Mostly 50-60fps" at first glance does sound worse than "occasional drops". It might be worth comparing the percentages of CPU and GPU usage of your computer with the percentages shown in the video. One thing not mentioned in the video is how the experience in the emulator compares to original hardware. If the game has some slowdowns on hardware and the emulators accurately emulate that, it's not exactly the PCs fault... Personally I'm hoping Intel keeps adding a little bit here and there to their internal GPUs.
@lurkerrekrul3 жыл бұрын
@@DoctorWhom I have an old system and I'm not sure what software would work for me to measure voltages, CPU temperatures, etc. I've always just run my CPU/GPU stock and trusted that everything was working properly. I typically don't even pay attention to FPS in games/emulators unless I'm specifically trying to compare performance. If a game seems to be running smoothly, that's good enough for me. It's just that Chains of Olympus is always held up as the gold standard of hard to emulate PSP games, the idea being that if a system can run that well, then every game that works in PPSSPP will also work well. That's not the case for me. In particular there are two games that have much worse performance unless I tweak the options. Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - This runs at about 50-75% of normal speed unless I set the Spline/Bezier Curve quality to medium. That gets it up to full speed. Or at least it seems like full speed. The opening FMV is fine, but when it goes to the actual game, you can hear that the audio is running slowly. Death Jr. II - When the game starts, it runs extremely slow, like 2-3FPS. I have to check the option to Disable slower effects. That gets it running normally. I'm not sure what, if anything, is missing with that setting checked, as the game still looks pretty nice to me. My point is this: If Chains of Olympus runs like a champ, but Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice and Death Jr. II run like crap with the exact same settings on the same system, doesn't that indicate that those two games are more demanding than Chains of Olympus? But yet nobody ever tests those games, instead they test Chains of Olympus and say "See, it runs great, and since this is one of the most demanding PSP games, if it can run this, it's going to run just about any PSP game at full speed." Maybe there's something about my particular system that makes those two specific games run worse, but I wouldn't know because nobody ever uses them to test these systems or compare their performance to other PSP games. I'd actually be interested to know if these games are more demanding than CoO for everyone else as well. Maybe most people today just have systems powerful enough that they don't notice any performance loss.
