The problem for me with this Boost kit is the fixed battery. With a Swytch kit you can change the battery very easily. I carry one or two spare batterys increasing my mileage by double or treble.

The loss of the rear gearing is off putting…… however the battery packaging is genius…. If this was combined with a front motor then that would be more elegant

There is a lovely simplicity to this conversion and the backers price seems great but like you I feel the loss of the hub gearing is a big issue. Also some of the other conversions with front hub motors allow easy swopping back of the original wheel and removing the battery so easy to switch back and forth between normal Brompton and ebike which I think is a great feature. Lastly the Brompton has twitchy steering and some people seem to like a little more weight on the front wheel with the hub motor and battery above. Actually I've just thought about one other issue, when you have the hub motor at the back the spokes end up being very short so the rear wheel will feel more harsh and less forgiving and that is where most of the riders weight is. You can get away with that more on the front. So overall I feel a front hub motor is a better option for a Brompton.

You missed a critical point about how the Boost kit is fitted and why it breaks the warranty. To fit the Boost kit, you (or the fitter) MUST expand the rear triangle a few millimetres and this is only possible by unnaturally forcing the rear steel triangle. This also explains why this bike has no mudguards since you can't fit them once you fit the Boost motor.

As far as I know, fitting any kind of conversion kit to your Brompton voids the warranty.
@My-Decaf-Journey
@My-Decaf-Journey 5 ай бұрын
@@carolineholdingit does indeed, but expanding the rear triangle is not just a warranty issue. What would happen if it would cause a serious issue to the bike or the rider down the line? Since this is a new kit and not many or zero people on the road/tested, I would’t expand my rear triangle and take a risk

Good news! We got hold of a P-Line yesterday and the battery pack fits without any changes into the curvy triangular uprights. We will likely provide special fitting pieces for P-Line bikes for the most secure fit possible. The P-Line axle is also a little wider than regular Bromptons so we'll make sure our new motor has a long enough axle. We can also definitely fit the 4 speed sprockets as used on the P-Line. Exciting!

As a now luckily much former owner of a 1966, new BMC Mini, "British Made" isn't exactly what I would name as any kind of an asset (Even from the corners of the front screen, water came in, as from many other places!). But my now rather much rebuilt and more/actually much less than 2019 "Superlight" M6LXBrompton (9 kilo, mudguards) could be nice with a little assisted ride, as the small wheels are rather Heavy Rolling! But the small battery can't give much of any assistance for its small size and the extra weight of the motor? I have just sold my Makita, Power assisted folding bike and the help from the two 18 volt Tool Batteries was rather minimal for more than a short distance! Finn. Denmark 🤔

As a 2 speed owner I feel it would add too much weight for analogue cycling and the 8% limit means the 'tain's might be impossible, but it looks sturdy enough for terrible London roads, and it's a step in the right direction, just not removable and the rear triangle has thin steel and I'm at the rider weight limit. The 2 speed is for speed and I'm going over 15 mph 90% of the time as it is.

We've picked up a couple of 2-speed Bromptons for use as demo bikes from Marketplace for around £650; anything made in the last ten years or so should be fine and we'll provide specific measurement instructions for very old Bromptons. Some super old ones may have 9mm axle slots whereas modern bikes (and our motor) use a 10mm slot.

I have Swytch with big battery and a ‘flight safe’ 95 wh. If the battery is not easily removable this is a problem for easy charging away from bike and removing for taking the bike, non- electric, on a bus where now annoyingly banned. Replacing existing gearing also bad. Front wheel much easier to swap to non electric when taking on a plane as we did before the small battery arrived. Think Swytch have nothing to worry about. Have loved the kit and would 100% recommend to any Brompton owner.

Swytch conversion seems to use a motor that is specific to only their Brompton kit, and appears to have significant rolling resistance when the electric assist is off, compared to the much lower rolling resistance motor from the "real" Brompton Electric
@boostbikes
@boostbikes 7 ай бұрын
The Boost motor uses a 'spragg clutch' in common with most geared e-bike motors so the resistance is practically zero when the system is off. Eilis talks about resistance in the review but we think she's talking about the natural resistance/drag from the bike. Spin the real wheel with the motor off and it'll freewheel as you'd expect from a non-motor hub. We've not measured the drag from a Swytch hub but several people have commented that it has drag.

I can do a round trip of 20Km where there are continuous steep hills up and down, on my Decathlon Elops 500 electric bicycle used on "Eco" setting, with it's 26" wheels and cheap parts and 6-speed Shimano derailleur with 24V Geared Hub rear mounted brushless sensorless motor and a 6 year old battery with it's 192 Watt-hour nominal capacity rating, 24V battery with Samsung cells, and have a couple of bars left on the controller LED display (I am 55Kg rider and not very strong), compared to the brand new 90 Watt-hour Swytch Air battery on a Brompton, where the Brompton is about 20 per cent less efficient to start off with when comparing an un-assisted Brompton with a regular 26" wheel unassisted bicycle. I am assuming that my Elops battery is only giving maybe 170 Wh instead of 192 Wh because it's done hundreds of cycles, and that I only used maybe 150 Wh because I had some left. So on the 26" wheel bike I am getting a consumption of around 7.5 Watt-hours per Km, and on your Swytch Air Brompton you are also getting 90 / 12 = 7.5 Watt hour per km, so you are consuming the same amount of electricity per Km, even though as you say you are on flat terrain and I am definitely not, but bare in mind that the Brompton is less efficient than a 26" wheel bike because of it's small wheels making the bike jump up and down over bumps instead of riding over them, which looses energy. Also, the brakes always seem to drag sometimes on my Elops bike no matter how I adjust the V-brakes (they won't recentre properly every time, sometimes they get "stuck"), whereas the brakes on my Brompton are much better and never have drag. Also I am using Marathon Plus tyres on my Elops, which have some rolling resistance compared to the Marathon Racer tyres on my Brompton. So I think that you are getting just a little less than the expected range from your Swytch Air Brompton, since Swytch claim a 15Km range for the Air battery on the Brompton Swytch electric kit. Do your Brompton wheels always run freely or is there any drag from the brakes?, and what tyres are you using and what is your rider weight and how strong are your legs? @@whitefalconcruzer

While the Brompton in house offering has its flaws, it does at least manage a respectable range in proper use. If you use it as a holiday bike to go in your camper/motorhome, range matters. Standard one manages between 25 miles in extreme hills to 35+ on more moderate rides, and because it has 6 speeds its better at hills so you use less battery. This would be good for city use but you cant take the battery off to charge presumably, so perhaps a downside?

Hello, My front engine recommendation.; many brands actually use this aikema (AKM85SX(F1)) motor in electric kits used in Brombton. It is a motor that does a really good job according to its weight. KT supports serial controllers and lcd's. I collected it myself, I am quite satisfied. The brand you bought loaded the battery directly on the handlebar, which is not a good situation, the handlebar will become cumbersome. However, I think there is kunteng (KT e bike controller) in it, maybe you can improve it. Note, if you buy directly from a Chinese shopkeeper in the form of a kit, the engine and controllers cost 200 dollars excluding the battery, you can probably get much more affordable in different countries with Turkish taxes.

The loss of hub-gears will be a negative for some people, definitely. From using the Boosted bike with 2-speed gears (same ratio as a Brompton 2-speed), the motor does a great job of making intermediate gears unnecessary because you just get going in the low gear and cruise in most conditions in the high gear, assisted by the motor. We believe our new motor is compatible with the new Brompton 4-speed setup so will provide info about that soon.

As stated in the video, not having to carry a battery separately on a train is a distinct advantage for this model though the battery looks to be rather exposed to damage when the bike is folded, jutting out at the back. Is there a reason why you can only have a two gear derailleur with this, and not Brompton’s four gear for hills - two ‘speeds’ isn’t much particularly if it has a draggy motor? It doesn’t appear to offer immediate accelerative assistance leaving the traffic lights except perhaps in ‘super boost’ but it still seemed to require a few turns of pedals to kick in. But without doubt it’s a neat and relatively lightweight electric conversion.

I think Brilliantbikes has a much less enthusiastic review. The motor is too wide for the rear triangle (hence the warranty issue), there is no torque sensor and the range seems to be much less than advertised. And given the mentioned retail price of 990 GBP (with or without installation??) it's even not much cheaper than a "real" Brompton electric. I personally wouldn't buy either of them but I think reviews should be reviews and not (paid?) advertisements.

That blue bike appears to be a clone copy, not a real Brompton?! But it's probably close enough to test with. I am interested in the kit, but I would need it to work with my H6L with it's 6 gears, as I live on a hill, with many other gradients around me. A pity that the price seems to be 2x what the Swytch kit is? I hope this Boost kit uses a motor with very low rolling resistance when the electrical assistance is turned off and you just want to pedal in the normal way?
@petergilbert72
@petergilbert72 7 ай бұрын
If you watch the video it says the Boost is unsuitable for gradients steeper than 8%, and the motor is a bit draggy if you cycle without motor turned on. Lots of hills on one ride would quickly drain the small battery. For info, the Brompton Electric’s motor is powerful and suitable for hilly terrain and it’s not draggy at all - but it’s only available as a complete bike.
@boostbikes
@boostbikes 7 ай бұрын
It's a real Brompton - bought as a stripped frame and we repainted it and rebuilt from parts, hence looking a bit non-original. To confirm (despite possible misunderstanding in the video) the rolling resistance of the motor when switched off is practically zero.

The "Nano" Brompton electric bike kit uses a motor which has 5x the rolling resistance of the non-electric Brompton front wheel, and requires you to remove the bottom bracket assembly in order to install the pedal cadence sensor! Spreading the rear triangle to mount the rear wheel with motor voids the Brompton warranty. It isn't reinforced like the fork on the electric oem Brompton. No thank you. Less expensive. And a compromise for those who own a conventional Brompton...maybe worth considering for short range trips. Battery doesn't have enough capacity for long range uphill rides. Lightweight riders will enjoy more benefit from this aftermarket kit versus heavier riders. Overall, mixed feelings. Price? 400? Well, it IS a more economic solution. But NOT a Brompton electric.

Had Boost accomodated a swap in and out battery, carrying a spare would have doubled the range etc.... So easy to fit ones self!? But one comment pointed out the Rear Triangle needs streatch apart. HELL NO !!

Giving up your Brompton 7 year frame warranty seems a big price to pay. At £1k plus the cost of a Brompton it would be better to go with the official Brompton electric... But for people with older Brommies then maybe..

Thanks for the comment. We (Boost) will match the original Brompton frame warranty so there's no loss of warranty support when installing this system 👍

The standard Brompton brakes on their non-electric bikes are VERY effective, almost too effective I find. In the dry, at least, not tried it in the wet so far.

its a load of old w@nk! is what it is... you gotta stretch your forks to fit the wheel, you cant for a mudguard, because it blocks the bb chain stay, in the valleys it wont do 3 miles, costs an arm and a leg and you cant keep it on boost for more than 10 seconds.

Does this youtuber not know that bromptons are engineered to handle better when you put a bag on the front bars versus no extra weight on the front bar. #criticallythink

The brompton battery only adds 2.5kg of weight to the standard bike, so there's no benefit to this kit at all, considering you have to have the bike near a charger to charge it
