Only addition I would add: Take a large, flat file and file the lip on the main threaded opening on the tank flat and true so the rubber gasket seals completely. Often, the lip is not flat, has some flashing, or the opening itself isn't even round (sometimes more oval shaped). If you don't do this, some will still leak even with the rubber gasket.

I haven't drilled a gas can, but I have used a spade bit on plastics a number of times and found the spade drill bits work extremely well. The ones with the little points on the outside edge, when you drill sheet plastic it works just like a cookie cutter.

Thanks for this video. Using the step-drill is an awesome idea. I need a fix for the two cans that I have because they are basically UNUSABLE. They are so miserable for me to pour, and I spill gas everywhere. So far the fix for me is to siphon the gas out of the can and into my chain saw, lawn mower and boat fuel tank.

Goofy regulations. I just use authentic NATO Jerry cans. No vapor leaks and the spout is a full flow spout. Don't worry about fire like with the plastic cans. I like the ARB dual can holders for fastening two tanks and locking them in place while in the vehicle. A friend of mine uses these spouts now that I told him about them so he no longer waits to refuel.

When I was a teenager in the 60s, I used a simple, metal gas can to fill that Briggs and Stratton. Unscrew the lid to pour, replace the lid after use. To my knowledge, I was never killed by a horrible gaseous fireball while refilling.

I wonder how many visitors to Canada bring back a few normal cans. Along with conversion kits, I can easily see people using alternative containers such as for kerosene cans to get around this. Likely jugs from laundry soap etc. being used for gas too.

That small spot is for the reduced diameter blocking device in a lead free fuel filling port. It will only except a narrow spout. It prevents putting diesel in there too. Without that small spout it would take hours to pour five gallons into a fuel tank without spilling it everywhere.

The nozzle design is driven both by safety, and by the EPA, to reduce gasoline vapors esceping into the air. Sadly, the designs have become so complicated trying to meet all the requirements, that more vapor may be escaping than before. Part of the problem is that people are lazy and sloppy, and just leave the caps off all the time, thus the spring loaded nozzle on this can, which prevents most vapor escaping when unattended.

I hate the spring spouts!!! Maybe turn the can upside down when drilling the hole to help prevent shavings from entering? The added smaller hole extension looks like it may make the nozzle too long. Note: My friends (neighbors) don't need to be drunk to pour gas onto an open flame/fire. Thanks.

Can this technique be used for filling a car? I have a Sceptor can and it’s impossible to pour into the tank with the nozzle.
@MegaTapdog
@MegaTapdog 3 жыл бұрын
you need to look closely at your car spout, there are 2 locking tabs inside your fuel hose that need to separate. check your owners manual. there should be a properly sized funnel somewhere in your car that is the same size as the unleaded fuel nozzle at the gas station that pushes those tabs to the side to allow the nozzle to go in. look closely and you will see it.

EZ Pour makes a much better spout than these flimsy noodle spouts. They make a rigid spout with a slight angle on it which makes it much easier to start it into the tank. I had one of those noodle spouts spring out of a gas tank and spray gas in my face. I threw it away and bought the rigid spout. It works like the old yellow spouts that used to be on gas cans.

@@ArnoldsDesign I see, thank-you. Maybe I could just make my own from similar plastic. Oh wait, I have an old gas can I don't mind cutting up. I could cut a round disk out of that to use as a block off. That way is the same type of plastic and won't deteriorate from the fuel too quickly.

This is true.. On my 92 ford ranger I use a 1/2 inch copper plumbing pipe and it is a perfect fit. Any bigger and it will not go in the tank. The 3/4 inch hose that some people use would need to get reduced down to the 1/2 inch at the tank so can not fill any faster than the 1/2 inch pipe.

I can never understand why most nozzles would not have a bend of at least 45* down. Unless you are pouring gas into a big hole you need it to start flowing downward not straight out where is then can easily flow partly right over the fuel tank opening.

@ArnoldsDesign
@ArnoldsDesign 6 жыл бұрын
We can't even import two stroke dirt bikes anymore, and they try to make it impossible to adjust the carburetor on your chainsaw without proprietary spline tools. It is US borne political and legal b.s., pure and simple, brought to us by sue happy injury lawyers and enviro freaks. I don't know if the cans are actually illegal, but they're hard to find. Vented cans can't be found in brick and mortar stores anymore, at least not any I have seen, so you have to go online to buy them, and they cost a lot more. I think a lot of people just assume the vented cans are no longer made, so they give up and pick up the junk cans they sell at walmart, costco, or wherever.

To dirll the hole, I filled the can with water. Probably a little overly cautious, but I was concerned with creating a spark with the bit on the plastic, or from the drill itself as being an ignition source. Then you need to get the water out of it and dry it completely of course.
