A terrifying and heartbreaking story. How the mind can be such a wonderful, yet terrifying place. Unfortunately Elisa showed clear signs of a severe mental episode... "A Psychotic Break". If I remember the case correctly and I could be wrong. There was evidence she was not taking her medication. Which led to the break, and ultimately her taking her life by hiding in what she thought to be safe place. Let's look at what we see, know, and can summarize the Inciting incident: The elevator - She was clearly suffering a mental delusion, or an episode of psychosis. A clear severe break from reality. - The poor maintenance of the building (the elevator) fed into her delusion. - This fueled her paranoia and by extension her fear. She knew she needed to get somewhere safe (Fight or Flight). - She couldn't go down, (by her logic) So lets go up. Where is the best place to hide? Not my room, how about the roof? Now we need to make assumptions: the roof - Psychotic episodes often have extreme synesthesia. How we perceive and process stimulation. - Elisa found herself on the roof of a hotel in Los Angeles in the middle of the day. I don't know about you, but that's a lot of extreme things to be processing while in a psychotic break. So what would you do? I know what I would do. - I would try to find somewhere safe, quite, and dark. Somewhere away from the maelstrom of senses she was suffering from. - She found that place in the water tanks. Cool, quite, and most importantly alone. Again due to poor maintenance the tanks did not have locks on the latch. - She went inside the tank and closed the door. However that door is meant to be opened from only the outside. Again poor maintenance, old equipment, and poor oversight. The final and most terrifying part: the last moments and finding the body (Again assumption) - Locked in that cold and dark place Elisa probably overcame her Psychotic episode. - She would have tried to escape, but again the door dose not open from the inside. - She would have struggled, yelled, and do anything to get someone's attention. (However she is on the roof of a very busy building in Los angels. No one would have heard her.) - Eventually treading water for so long, would have lead to her exhaustion. - Unable to keep up she slowly sank and tragically drowned. - Again Due to poor maintenance the tanks were not checked until a complaint was filed. - To get that kind of ruddy black water the body would have had to have been in there for a while. Swelling, decomposition, and a bunch of other horrible things. Cold, Wet, Alone, and Afraid. Trapped in darkness screaming for help, until finally her body gave up. A truly terrible and terrifying way to die, supernatural or not. Truly the mind is a horrifying place, capable of conjuring the most terrifying monsters and demons. Especially those suffering from mental anguish. Please get professional help if you are suffering folks. It's easier than it looks, and it can quite literally save your life... I know I want you to be safe and well. Great video.... Now a question for you and anyone still reading. Something appropriate given the dark nature. "If you're frightened of dying, and holding on... You'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you made your peace, then the devils are angels freeing you. It's just a matter of looking at it that's all. So don't worry okay..." What Movie is this line from? And what game series did it heavily inspire? Rest in peace Elisa.

@davidd836 Okay here’s some context to explain stuff: Elisa Lam had bipolar disorder, and she was managing it with Wellbutrin , an anti-depressant, Lamictal, a mood stabiliser , and seroquel, an anti-psychotic. Based on post-mortem examination results, for some reason, elisa lam completely stopped taking her seroquel for a while before her death. This was already dangerous for someone who only took seroquel. But it was EXTREMELY dangerous for Elisa as she was taking Wellbutrin. I’m someone that takes Wellbutrin as well and that shit is kind of like the crack in the anti-depressant world. It works to increase the dopamine and norepinephrine in your system. A huge side effect of being on Wellbutrin is that you become alot more prone to anxiety and stress due to the increased amounts of norepinephrine. So even though a regular person may feel a bit creeped out by being in the Cecil hotel , it can be downright terrifying for people who take Wellbutrin because our system is already hypersensitive to stress and fear. Combine this with the fact that she’s already off her anti-psychotic, her mind is already unstable from it, and she could’ve already begun to experience paranoia and delusions as her body goes into withdrawal. She was in an incredibly sensitive state at that point and could’ve felt that someone was following her. She was already acting erratic before she entered the lift(from the cctv footage). I think when she unknowingly caused the elevator to hang, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back for her. It probably sent her from a state of mania to a full-blown manic episode. It’s pretty much expected that someone going through a severe manic episode would become a danger to themselves or others. IMO she was completely unconscious after that point. Yes, she was awake and moving, but she probably was fully blacked-out and it lead to her death. The only thing unnerving here from my perspective is how Murphy’s Law was enacted so well when it came to Elisa’s fate. It’s truly as if everything that could’ve gone wrong, did. I honestly think Elisa could’ve been in an even worse position. People on manic episodes can completely disappear from the face of the earth. She could’ve been targeted by a predator, she could’ve gone into a forest and passed away due to the elements. It’s good that her body was able to be found. At least we know what happened to her. However, I still feel so horrible for her. It is so upsetting and makes me shudder to think of how much terror she was probably feeling before her death that she felt the only way out was to end it all. She had a long , incredible life to live, and it’s so infuriating how mental illness robbed her life and robs millions of people’s lives everyday. I hope that she rests well, free from the demons that tormented her in her waking life . Sorry for the rambling, her case is one of those things that rly hits a nerve for me .

So what happened to Elisa depends on a detail I've repeatedly read conflicting reports about: Whether the water tank was or was not locked from the outside. Important as hell, right? But depending on which source you're reading, that detail flips. Also just wanna throw out that if I was alone and waiting on a malfunctioning elevator, I could see myself doing stuff like Elisa just to goof off. I jump around and do random arm movements while I wait for the microwave or for the shower to heat up. Like, "How quietly can I sneak?" or "How far can I twist my arms around each other?" If someone was filming me in those moments, it would look alarming as hell.

@Adamant_Adam9 ай бұрын
I've seen photos, and honestly, I think that conflicting report comes from poor verbiage, that people heard and ran with. I think we hear "locked" and think, a padlock, or a key. I imagine it was more like a one-way-door, with a latch or lever that has to be engaged for the door to open. I doubt the tank had a way to open it from the inside, you know? (Think, an unlocked door with a handle only on one side. Turn the handle, door opens.) Once you enter, it isn't locked, but no way in hell you can go back the way you came. Terrifying.

Her clothes were with her, in the tank, but she herself was naked? well, that leaves me to imagine 2 scenarios a) she got in (or was placed) already undressed, clothes brought (or dumped) with her or b) was lost on the roof, possibly in a panic due to the high sensory position she was in, got in to the tank for dark quiet solace, still clothed. Upon calming down, trying to leave, and subsequently realizing there was no escape, removed her clothes by her own accord. If anyone is confused why I believe this may have happened, why she would do that: non-swimming Clothes fill with water, get heavy and sink you down, so something taught in a lot of swim classes is in case you fall into a body of water, can't get out, and your clothes are dragging you under, how to remove your clothes and use as a buoy. (idk if anyone else is familiar with this, but is just what I heard from my spouse who had swim classes in highschool.) I really do wonder if that could have at all been possible. Especially now knowing the detail she was undressed. Do you know to what extent she was undressed? Undergarments' removed as well? That might disprove my theory, in that case, I'll admit. However, a detail to remember is there was no indication of trauma to her body, and Elisa's lungs WERE full of water, which usually indicates death via drowning. She would likely not have had water in her lungs if she was deceased before being placed there. (If I am wrong, someone correct me I don't wanna spread misinfo. She was there for a whole 2 weeks before being found after all... perhaps it's arguable that water would have found it's way there anyways.) Some ppl think she was playing the elevator game. Either some versions claim that her parents have said that she DIDN'T have any mental problems and thus no medications. Plus the tanks have very heavy lids. The story is a very strange story. Either the short story Dark water made by Koji Suzuki (what got adapted in Japan as movie and remade in in USA) ISN'T based on it, the story came out in Japan in 96, faaaaar before Elisa Lam event happened. It is a weird thing that i have seen a lot of ppl claiming, because most ppl only know of the American remake.
@rabbitguts25188 ай бұрын
I would take the claims that the family were adamant about her mental health being fine with a grain of salt. You need to remember in many places mental health issues are looked down upon. In a place like Japan were status and appearances are incredibly important it's very common for families to completely ignore mental health issues or flat out deny they're there as to not tarnish the family reputation. She was confirmed to have had bipolar . On top of that the footage was viewed by bodylanguage and mental health experts and they agreed it wasn't behaviour you'd see in someone if they were'nt having a mental health crisis such as a delusion or psychosis. As for the story link, it's doubtful that it was a 'prediction' but rather sadly a reoccurring fact in human history - it's been common place for as long as humans have existed to discover that a rash of illness has been caused by a corpse in the water, be it human or animal. It's actually a trope to trace a stream or other water source just to find SHOCK a dead person there making everyone ill from the decay. The fact the story specified a watertank was just a coincidence and not much of a stretch at that but people just WANT to belive it's something spookier than it truly is. It's just sad in reality.
@PureMaddnessOne8 ай бұрын
@@rabbitguts2518 She is Canadian from Chinese origin, she isn't Japanese though. Either the bipolar claim apparently came from the coroner, not a doctor. Some ppl did claim she took some substance, others have claimed she mixed up pills with friends, i have seen claims she had a really bad reaction 2 weed. The book story wasn't a "prediction" according 2 some ppl. Some claim the (American remake )movie is based off her, others claim that her thing is based of the movies/story. There r diff versions of her story. Some have misinformation. The heavy lid part is still oddest part. There r rare moments that (average) mothers were able 2 lift up small cars in order 2 save their kids, so it isn't imposible she lifted up the lid alone, but very unlikely. The event is strange.

And in the end when she was talking she was actually complaining about the hotel using her fingers like : first the hotel is dirty now the elevator is not working and she was clearly upset especially that she was alone and suffering from bipolar disorder !

Seems very odd,because the one video they show us supports the mental illness aspect,but wouldnt that have been something that others would have mentioned about her past?

What I've learned is there's a game called the "elevator game" that you have to push random buttons in order to travel specific floors from going to the fifth floor. Once you arrive, you have to close your eyes or don't speak the ghost of a woman. Because she's not real and not alive. If you do speak to the lady, you will end up dead her in the spirit realm I did not played the game and don't know the whole story behind it, but I did heard about it somewhere on the website.

I believe it happened and they simply covered it up considering the rep they had and the need to keep their business doors open LA is full of spoiled rich kids of celebrities, politicians, public figures, etc. How many times have we heard or seen "jokes" and or references of men bringing call girls into hotel rooms, have fun and then the next morning wake up next to their "mistress" well.. dead? as far as the creepy images in the elevator, I've heard and seen videos and photos taken of people right before death but when the images are looked at, sometimes faces are distorted, blurred, or have lights or spots in the place of their faces. mostly this would happen more with old Polaroid photos and vhs videos.

The door to the roof was locked, the tank doors weighted hundreds of pounds look at her, did she look like someone who could lift a water pressure door weighing that much?even if she was having a mental break her small frame could only lift what her bone structure would allow her to lift. I think there was something they are covering up, not paranormal but human, maybe more that one person two or three, I think someone knew she was alone and took full advantage of that, killed her and to hide the crime stuffed her into that water supply tank, it had been maintained a week before she got there, anyone who was involved with that would know they wouldn't check that area it was already maintained, no need to check it, the manager went out of her way to say the doors were locked and nothing out of the ordinary took place that night, although there was construction happening on that floor, and exits were sealed off, some homeless people in that area were using the hidden camera areas to sleep and do drugs, needles were found in that area and passed off as " Sometimes this happens here" it is after all in a VERY bad part of town where there are drug deal;ers and postution a crime riddled area. the mystery behind the story was a good way to bring people into a dying business and make them some money and fame, secretly firing the person on duty that night a year later wouldn't arouse any susspisions, she was killed and the person who did got away with murdering this poor girl.
@Solararisa9 ай бұрын
She was having a psychotic breakdown. It feels a little too convenient that someone would try to kill her just during her breakdown. There may have been mechanisms to somehow lift the tank lid. It makes no sense that someone killed her and even managed to lock the door from the inside.
@Adamant_Adam9 ай бұрын
(look up images of the tanks, so you know what I'm meaning as I speak- (10:57 in the video, if that helps :)) Yeah, the lids are like 6-8 ft across and probably weight a literal ton, but there are visible maintenance hatches, on all 4 . The entire lid doesn't need to be removed to be inspected, which is why only 1 guy was needed to check the tank when there was reports of black water. Not to say the rest of what you believe isn't possible, and definitely not here to say you're wrong. Just hate hearing that detail spread about the lids weighing so much, when the entire lid doesn't need to be removed to have access to the tank anyways. not that you asked, but personally I think the hatch was a one way, and she didn't realize until she locked herself in. (Imagine a door with a handle, you have to turn it to open it, but once you step in and the door closes, there's no handle on THAT side. You're effectively locked in, with no actual locks involved.) Coroner report also said there was no indication of injury/struggle and there was water in her lungs which indicated death via drowning. I don't think Cecil hotel had the money to pay off the coroner to lie... but who knows? ofc, There's *definitely* a lot of cover up involved, I won't deny that. Between doors left unlocked and no security personnel to keep anyone from getting up there. Just a lack of adequate cameras. I mean, this could have easily been an old person w dementia disoriented and lost as much as a young woman having a mental episode; that's WHY there are precautions in place in these buildings. To keep people from accidentally hurting themselves wandering into places they shouldn't. Locked doors, at the very least. Obviously, the hotel did not have that in place or enforced, and to cover their ass I agree, fosters this story of "Dark things just happen here, ignore the guy who forgot to lock up the roof door, we'll fire him for something else, keep this under wraps, no one else gets hurt, maybe it will blow over... It's not blowing over? Uhh... maybe it was a ghost, oohhh 👻 come stay at hotel Cecil, we got ghosts!" Jokes aside, it's horrific to know that... we'll just never KNOW for certain, what was happening, why she was so scared, and how she wound up in that tank. A shame she will be remembered by the world for the mystery of her death, and not what could have been, had she not gone to Cecil Hotel. RIP Elisa

@@Adamant_Adami been thinking about it. And u described exactly what I was thinking. The odds of someone actually chasing her is low. I don't understand why there is only 1 camera footage. This obviously means the hotel is hiding something. If we put aside this supernatural, as I doubt any of us has had such experience. I feel the hotel most likely covered it up as they had a lot of safety issues on that day or week. Like OP said, the maintenance was done a week beforehand. I don't know how easy it is to get to the tank from the elevator but; She had an episode, possibly seeing something that scared her. She then runs wherever the wind takes her, suddenly coming across an unlocked door that leads outside. Finds a tank with a ladder and climbs for high ground or to get inside. Realises the hatch is one way and is stuck.

How do you explain the elevator closing and opening after she left
@TNTBMyt_075 ай бұрын
I've heard of a theory that she might have played the elevator game It's a supernatural game where by pressing a pattern of buttons in an elevator of at least 10 floors, in the end, you'll go to an alternate dimension filled with ghosts and stuff But the problem is in the middle of the pattern a lady ghost who looks normal appears only to you and will enter the lift. If you try to interact with her in any way, even if you see her, you will die in an unexplainable way. As you see, that explains a lot of stuff, her random button pressing and looking out for someone, then moving her hands in weird ways, which might have been her interesting cuz the lady makes you feel very curious and tempted to interact. Hence why she died in the water tank so bizarrely. And that's just a theory, a GHOST THEORY. Thanks for listening

Two boys wanted to go swimming but their parents weren't around to take them swimming, they kicked a ball into someone's face who demanded they leave. They went on the rooftop to play ball until they saw a water tank, unlocked. They got the idea to swim in it & used a rope to get inside, it broke the handle off & boom, they fell in. They became The drowned water ghost & contaminated the water to possess everyone in the apartment to go into the water tank with them. I honestly believe it as psychosis on the pure basis that I've had manic psychosis with my Bipolar and have done similar behaviours. I've locked our building elevator on our floor while desperately trying to get away from voices following me and since the elevator won't move without us using our keyfob, it wouldn't close. I only ran away when the door lock alarm went off. I've also hidden in our building lobby bathroom crying because I knew no one would expect me there, it was cool and quite, the doors are floor to ceiling in the stall with only one way in and out where someone couldn't be hiding. It was the ultimate safety of 3 impenetrable stone walls and a floor to ceiling hardwood door I could lock and watch while huddled under the sink in the handicap stall. If I had never had these experiences, I could see how people find the explanation of psychosis far-fetched but, having lived through manic psychosis, I agree with that assessment.

If I‘m being honest, there have been way more murders and accidents at the hotel, and they never closed permanently, it didn’t seem to make less people go there. In that case I don’t think it was the staff that tried to hide something just to keep the business up. I don’t think she was murdered, she had really serious mental problems, she had bipolar disorder, and at the time she wasn’t taking her medications correctly. The movements she made was because she was hallucinating. She was most likely running from something - or someone - that was not even there. If she was killed there would‘ve been signs of it, there was nothing though. It would make sense why the police dogs led the police to the windows which lead to the fire exit. She has probably climbed up, since the only other way to the roof was locked and secured by alarms. It is unfortunate, but bipolar disorder - or mental illnesses in general - in the worst case, make you do things that you wouldn’t believe.
