As a professional CAD designer I can always tell when the car manufacturer depended too much on virtual modeling and not enough on life size clay models. On a CAD workstation, even the most experienced designers lose sense of scale and really can't say what the car will really look like under real lighting conditions. I'm sure a few design studios have played with and researched the virtual lighting conditions in their CAD and rendering software, but it's never quite as "real" as a an actual full size physical model sitting on pavement under the sun, or clouds, or a showroom floor. And YES, using your hands to sculpt an auto body is a much more direct and gratifying method than trying to assemble all the geometric constraints of a surface through point clouds, 2D & 3D sketches, lofts, and sweeps. The hand modeled surface nearly always has a more natural look than the CAD modeled one. In order to replicate that "Hand Modeled" look a CAD designer has to be able to envision the multitude of geometric changes happening all over the surface of an auto body and then figure out all the means that can be used to fool the CAD automation into generating what they desire. It's way more difficult in virtual reality than you would think; sculpting is just plain easier. Unfortunately, management sees CAD modeling as far cheaper than thousands of pounds of modeling clay. So guess what they pay for?

Folks excited about the new awd option, let me make some technical points to make you reconsider. Fwd vehicle with winter tires is safer in the snow than awd with all seasons. Here are the main determiners of safety in the snow: the ability to drive through deep snow without getting stuck, cornering grip, stopping distance , acceleration off the line, high-speed stability, climbing up slippery hills. Winter tires help with all 6, because they give you much better mechanical grip in all situations. Awd only helps with 3 because it does absolutely nothing to improve grip. For this Mazda3, awd adds 200lbs, cuts fuel economy by 2-3 mpg and forces you to pay $3k more. The car has 186hp and a we’ll sorted suspension - you’ll have to try very hard to make it torque steer or spin the tires. So, forget the tv ads that drilled awd safety into your heads - you’ve been misled. Save you freaking money, buy the lighter, quicker, more efficient fwd and a set of winters if you need them. Awd makes low-power cars worse, not better.
@WoodshavenPatriot5 жыл бұрын
FrostyCoug I agree. I went from an Audi A4 to a latest gen vw Passat. I run dedicated ice/snows on the Passat and over last 2 seasons I have not experienced an appreciable drop in winter driving performance. AWD has the slight advantage with traction on steep hills or deeper snow.
@FrostyCoug5 жыл бұрын
WoodshavenPatriot True. My wife drives a 2016.5 CX-5 Sport awd. She drove through last winter on stock, all-season Yokohamas. I second that awd helped to get the car going in the snow even on all-seasons. It got off the line pretty quick and that somewhat helped turn-in, in a point-and-shoot kind of way, but the lack of stability, lateral grip and confident stopping made her nervous. For this winter I bought her a set of Blizzaks. The car is a tank now. It stops on a dime and turns in the snow like on dry pavement. It gets off the line even faster. Wife is now super confident driving in any weather. I myself drive a fwd compact car with snow tires. It doesn’t get going quite as quickly, but I have just as much control and confidence in it. So, I won’t say that awd has no benefit; it just isn’t worth it for this Mazda3, all things considered. The only advantage is better acceleration in the snow that you’ll enjoy a few times each year, but the penalties of higher purchase price, lower fuel economy, more weight, slower acceleration, more expensive tire maintenance will be with you every day.

I have watched a lot of Mazda 3 reviews in the last two days. This felt more like a commercial than a review. There were no negatives. Everything has problems, even if they are mostly subjective.

This is a really great car video. Gets into the technology and the Mazda representative clearly knows his stuff.
