Nice that you pre-planned this with the UFH. Our build consists of a lot of stuff like this, except that I end up changing my mind then kicking myself that the UFH prevents runs prevent me from doing what I want! (VERY glad we took ridiculous number of photos of the UFH though... and also when we tested it, with the thermal camera!)

This is exactly what I want in our build in France. It’s not happening with the builders but will be on my wife’s list of jobs once the builders are out. The hidden hinge is part of the door but the rest will be up to me to sort. That is unless you fancy a “FREE” (ok working holiday) two week holiday in France a hundred miles southwest of Toulouse in the middle of the countryside with views of the Pyrenees mountains and swimming pool. I’m sure you would have it done in a couple of days.

Hey Robyn great work as usual … did you cut the strips on table saw or circular saw I have tried with hardwood B&Q ply and get lots of splintering even when sawing with the grain in table saw with 60 tooth blade 😢
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction Жыл бұрын
Hi, I used a combination of table saw, rail saw and I had a number of sheets cut in the workshop as there was many exactly the same size rips to do and it was far more cost effective to have them done in the workshop than on site

Poplar ply, also known as lightweight ply, (although not exactly light!) Used in campervans, motorhomes and caravans for decades. Not cheap! Average £150 for an 8x4. Laminated is waterproof so white used for campervan shower cubicles. Good stuff 👍

Yes, a trade name is Voringer ply and comes in different front face finishes.

I have a Fender Telecaster with a poplar body faced with very thin maple. If Poplar's good enough for an electric guitar, I'm sure it'll be great for plywood.

Robin, it looks like you’ve managed to get a better quality Poplar faced ply than Peter Millard did. The ones he bought for his workshop drawers were ultra-thin Poplar facing and had loads of voids especially on the long cut edges. Unfortunately not a proper substitute for birch ply at all

How much is a sheet of this alternative ply? I have a birch supplier near me but its £140 for 12mm, almost £250 for 18mm! I've stopped using plywood where I can because the far eastern ply is that bad. Cheers

It's £140 a sheet. That's no cheaper than birch and birch isn't actually that difficult to find if you have a have decent timber merchant.
@ukconstruction

I have made a similar screen for an office ‘breakout area’ some years ago now ,,, most definitely a case of something over designed. Zero functionality and ultimately a waste of money.
