Years ago I read in a non-Savage forum where guys were discussing various guns including Savage. A guy wrote something I still remember. He said Savage has never forgotten that the barrel is the gun. Features be dammed. If the barrel sucks features are useless

I had to send in my savage axis twice.. it shot well as for groups but when you can't eject the brass it's annoying. They finally got it fixed the 2nd time.

Most manufacturers have pretty good barrels. My only complaint on the savage is the heavy bolt lift. I don't like the accutrigger, but Timney makes a replacement.

@Anschutz270 Agreed. At a local Big 5 I was able to look over a Savage 110 Precision. I couldn't keep the rifle shouldered while cycling the bolt because the lift was so heavy. I know a precision gun isn't usually shoulder fired, but even on a tripod or a bag just cycling the bolt would alter the point of aim. Opted for somthing else.

For a number of years, I ran monthly 100 & 200 BR matches at a very large gun club north of Metro Atlanta. And for about 20 years, I shot in the matches every month. For our club level matches we had 3 classes: stock, modified (custom barrels, stocks, triggers but stock actions) and full on Bench Rest. It was rare for anything other than a Savage to win either of the first 2 classes. They weren't even close to being competitive to an in-tune-full-on bench rest rifle though. Nothing is. I have full BR rifles but I've also got several Savages. I took one, a model 12 BVSS with a custom trigger, put on a barrel chambered for 6mm BR and went up to the 600 yard prone matches and gave those guys fits. It was shooting relay after relay of 200-20X, perfect scores. It means that every round, 20 times in a row, it was hitting inside a 6'' circle, centered in the target at 600 yards. Savage has been doing this for a while. If you live in North Georgia, Alabama or even South Carolina and want to join a LARGE club, Riverbend Gun Club is one of the best in the nation per some consultants we hired to design more ranges. The club is 1000 acres and has so many different ranges that I've lost count, for every type of shooting and the club is competition centered. Every weekend there will be several large competitions of different types. We host national level events. We have a couple of thousand members. Ive played around with both the BR and Norma and love both versions. Im currently trying to see what all I can get the 6 ARC to do in a bolt gun on both the bench and in the field before I invest too deeply in it. As far as your 110 comments in your past club shoots, were you referring to after....say 2005 to 2010ish.... or prior? Dont get me wrong I love the 110s and in todays world I'd definitely sit at the 300, 600 or even at a grand with one in my hand all day long. But back in the day there were a lot of 700s (including mine) that beat the brakes off a lot of the 110s in both FTR and Open. As far as an out of the box gun you could go buy and go straight to the match there is no question I'd chose a 110, but as far as tweaking the trigger, action and stock the old 700s were hard to beat. I know later years the 110s started winning the majority of the events, but before that the 700s were king and a man that really knows how to run a good older version 700 could still give a 110 hell even today 👍

Savage is known for their accuracy. Most attribute it to the floating bolt head, button broached rifling and the lock nut barrel. It is no surprise that Ruger used the lock nut barrel on their American rifles. General consensus is that the Ruger Americans are highly accurate (I concur) plus they eject MUCH, MUCH better than any current Savage model. Between this particular Savage rifle and the Ruger American, I think I'd take the American especially if it is a gen 2 that uses AICS magazines.

My first rifle in the early 2000's was a used 110 I bought from the guy who got me into big game hunting on the cheap. That old .243 still slings groups the size of a dime with handloads. Love that old gun, unfortunately it rains to much to feel good about taking it hunting here in AK a lot of the time but savage makes damn good rifles.

I have the 110 heavy barrel in 243 put it in a mdt chassis vortex venom 5x25 scope. 5 rounds hand loaded in a thumbnail every Time super accurate rifle.. The model 12 will take a tick of a dogs ass at 200 yards 😂

My 30 year old Savage 110FP, heavy barrel 223 shoots in the 2s all day long, Canjar set down to 2 oz. Trigger, Synthetic stock filled with lead, it weighs 18 lbs. Obviously this is a Bench gun set up for target shooting. Load development used was the Claud Audett ladder method. Necks is turned to .oo10 Bald Eagle front rest, w micrometer adjustments. Flat metal plate screwed to the forearm that rides evenly on the flat plate front rest. Set up to free recoil straight back 40 power Tasco Scope. After set up I do not touch the rifle with my cheek or shoulder, just 2 oz trigger pull One hole groups are common. It keeps up with the exotic “Group Specific” high dollar Bench rest guns. Savage has been making some of the best guns for a long time

Years ago when ar 15s were all the craze i would go to the local pawn shop and buy buy buy any savage bolt 110 from 3006 to 223, sometimes for 150 bucks with scopes worth more than the gun at the time . Loved them all back into shooting condition, 7mm mags and 300 winnys barrels green from neglect but cleaned up and shot great, some I rebarreled to other calibers w shaw or ea brown did trigger work or stock swaps, but all were amazingly accurate. Still think they are great , kept the original barrels for future swap projects, . Great love affair with the savage bolt actions.

While deer hunting in northern Missouri back in the 90’s, my Remington suffered a broken firing pin. Stupidly, I had not brought along a backup rifle, so was forced to run into the nearest town to look for one. Understand, it was a Sunday, during a deer season that was only about two weeks long….I was pressed for time. My only option was the nearest towns Walmart, whose selection was distressing. There were exactly 2 rifles in the display. Both were Savage 110 bolt guns. One was in 30-06, the other was a .270. The later had a factory supplied scope already mounted. I had never even shot a .270 before, but the already mounted scope made the choice for me. After buying the rifle, and a couple of boxes of ammunition, I returned to the deer woods. After test firing a few shots at increasing distances, I found that this rifle (as it came out of the box) was shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yards…….that must have been a really good day at the Savage factory. 🫡 A couple of hours later I saw a nice sized doe across the field. A single shot dropped her where she stood. That distance stepped off right near 400 yards. I’ve been a fan of Savage rifles ever since and have since bought my daughter a 110 chambered in .243. I wholeheartedly recommended the 110 to anyone that asks. 🫡

This has nothing to do with barrel break in. You properly break in a barrel to avoid future issues caused by jacket material collecting in microscopic machining grooves. Virtually every barrel manufacturer and professional precision rifle maker advises a good break in, but sure, this video proves them all wrong.

Honestly, do whatever makes you feel better about your rifle. I think it's crap, I don't clean my rifles and they all continue to shoot great. The military snipers that I have run across (even the sniper school instructors) only clean every 200-300 rounds. Even on a new barrel they will just shoot, and shoot and shoot and shoot.

I saw an interview with an engineer that said that the only reason that they put a break-in procedure in the owners manual is because they were getting flooded with requests for one from customers and when they said that they didn't need one they didn't believe them. He said that there is no scientific proof that you need to break in a barrel. I've never done a break-in. I go straight out to the range and sight it in and then maybe verify it a couple days before I go hunting.

I’ve always loved Savages, for one thing they have made left-handed version. They spent money on barrels, and with the accutrigger, they are accurate and durable. MY first Savage rifle? A .30-‘06 when I was 18 YO, 52 years ago. Now my son has it. Shot lots of plain game in Africa.

The trick I’ve used for zeroing with a mount like that goes like this. Fire your shot. Then put your reticle back on the aim point you just used. While looking through the scope, adjust the windage and elevation knobs until your reticle is right on the bullet hole from your first shot. Then aim in on your desired aiming point and test. Fine tune if necessary. Using this method I’ve been able to zero a rifle in three shots.

Big fan here Who_tee_who, like minded fella. Love me a budget rifle that shoots lights out. Friendly tip. When you’ve got that thing in a sled like that, fire a shot and then dial your scope cross hairs down to from the point of aim (bulls eye) down to the point of impact. Makes for a super quick zero, can be done in 2-3 shots total. Hard to do without a very solid position like a sled but saves on ammo ($) and time.

Of all the firearms out there, my preferences run towards Savage. I have had a great deal of success with Savage firearms for over 40 years. My first was in the 1980s when I bought a 110 E. It was a nice inexpensive rifle, rough in finish. But it shot like a dream. Since I have collected numerous Savage rifles. My latest, is the savage Trail hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. I bought a Savage 11 223 REM Trophy Hunter on Clearance (they were getting discontinued) back in 2018 for $299. Factory bore mounted 3-9x40 Nikon scope. Took it out to the range and I was getting consistent 0.7-0.9 inch groups at 100 yards with factory cheap hunting ammo. 50 grain tipped Fiocchi ammo. Match ammo is around 0.5 at 100. Best $300 I ever spent on a rifle.

Savages are accurate out of the box because they have a free floated bolt head. It doesn't bind. Savages also have a barrel nut so head space alignment can be adjusted while other bra 16:50 nds can't.👍

I also like that the Accutrigger is user adjustable so you don't need to immediately buy an aftermarket trigger for your new rifle. If you have another Savage in a different caliber the trigger will feel the same.

I have a Marlin X7S .308 which has the exact floating bolt head, barrel nut and trigger as Savage. Once Remington bought Marlin, they kept the action because it's a better design than the 700 and named it the cheaper .783.🤔

Ive hunted with a Savage 110 for years in .30-06- always moa accurate with a Leopold 2x7 scope. It loves 165gr bullets. I restocked it with a (old school) gorgeous tiger-striped walnut thumbhole stock (1970's). The combo is light, great for mountain hunts here in Utah.

Nice setup. One thing, I've found sometimes with the Hawke scopes (I have several), as there's no Eyepiece Lock Ring you can sometimes get a little eyepiece wiggle if you knock it or use flip covers. I pop a 30mm O-Ring in the gap between the Ocular lens and body to snug down on to. It eliminates any possibility of wiggle and keeps dirt and wet out the thread I used to use a 30x1mm O-Ring and am currently using a 30x2mm. Thanks for the great vids 👍

Bought my first Savage 110L in .30-‘06 52 years ago, still own it, but my son has it! Since then I’ve bought 2 7mm-‘08’s (one left handed the other right handed), and a .300 WinMag (left handed) I needed a .375 H&H mag for an Africa hunt in 2007, and their customer shop built it for me in 8 weeks! And in case you like the old ones, I also found a Model 99 lever action. In .300 Savage. Smooth action. A bunch of great rifles.

I hope Hogue stiffened the front of the stock ? Howa used them back in the day in their 1500. And I believe they still do. I have the older one in 25-06. Love the feel of the stock but the front near the sling stud needed reinforcing. For it would hit the barrel.

Well, I happen to have a Ruger Mk II that I bought from KMart in 2000. My brother bought the "special" Savage 110 with scope (cheap scope). I adorned mine with a nice Burris scope. I reload my own 7mm Rem Mag, and my brother bought the bargain basement 30-06 ammo. My Ruger shot dime size groups at 100yds. My brother's rifle, let's say, was lucky to keep them rounds on paper. So he asked me what could be wrong with the rifle (of course it wasn't him). Well I took a look and said the scope needed to be scrapped. Then we checked the rifle bedding. the screws were loose. One issue is that one of the two screws that holds the action is secured through the trigger guard, and in this case it was made of plastic. So we order a metal trigger guard, installed it and the scope and after a bore sight, took it out for a ride. My brother took aim, and fired. He got on the paper, but was nervous about taking a second shot, not knowing if it would group or not. So I helped out and shot the second round. Two holes touching. I told him he should take the next shot and he did. A perfect cloverleaf, that's two shooters and all with his cheap ammunition. His ear to ear grin said it all. And me, I am still very impressed by the capability of the Savage 110.

I picked up a savage 12fv from cabelas around Christmas 2017 for $200 26” barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor I put it in a xlr element chassis with a athlon Midas tac for scope. With my handloads it shoots 5 shot .25” groups consistently. Savage actions feel cheap and clunky but dang does that rifle shoot!!

I have a Savage 110 that I had modified to take AICS 10 rd magazines. That is the ONLY modification I have made. Has shot sub .25 MOA from day one. The first time I rang steel at a 1000 yards was with this gun. I am STUPID happy with it.

I got a 1994 Savage 110 270 and it’s a tack driver. I bought a cheap box of Super X 130gr and I couldn’t believe how well it shot practically cut the same hole at a 100 yards. 🎯I paid 280 bucks for it out the door at a pawn shop and it didn’t have a scratch on it and it still don’t. It’s a blond wood birch I guess..fine rifle for the price

Anytime you buy a new rifle you absolutely must take the scope base off degrease it apply blue lock-tight and torque to 25 inch lbs. Same with action screws in this rifle 40 lbs. will do it. If you don’t know torque specks. Contact the manufacturer. Same with muzzle break. If it is not degreased torqued properly it will loosen and shoot fly shit groups all over. I don’t know why manufacturers don’t clean up cutting oil from drilling ect. and allow the firearm out the door. Recipe for disaster and bad reputation. Great Video.

I have a Savage110BL I bought used in the early80s. I was just starting reloading. I put together4 loads. When I shot the first load it went in 3/4 inch. The other were right at an inch. I used that load ever since for hunting. I have taken more than 50 deer and antelope. 48 grains IMR 4064 165 SBT Sierra in LC match brass. I love the wood stock. The others work but somehow there's nothing like a wood stock blued rifle. Or handgun for that matter.

The Savage 110's have always killed the Ruger Americans. People always wanted to compare the American to the Axis. Never understood why when the 110 and American price points were closer. I've got a factory 110 hunter in 6.5 creedmoor that shoots the Deer Season XP 129g less than 1/4 MOA.

I have a Savage 110 Hunter in 270 Win. Wicked accurate and best group so far is .43. The accufit stock is great for customized cheek weld, but I would drop that for this beauty. Hogue stock and cerakote at that price point, yes please! The only thing wrong I’ve found with these push feeds is short stroking will fail to feed. Not a Savage issue per se, but any push feed we just have to do a full bolt throw to cycle a new round.

0.3 groups at 100 yard with 180 grain Hornady sst. I would have no issue ringing steel for a long distance shot. Recoil is like a 308 since I installed a muzzle brake. ​@@JohnLee-jk5ew

I still run my old Savage 110C with a lefty bolt. Savage has always had a great bolt, very smooth, decent trigger that I can adjust myself. Savage is known as the best out of the box rifle. Always has been.

I’m a savage fan. Still have my 110 from the early 90’s. I took care of it. Now gave it to my son. To this day never had any problems with it. Good hunting rifle that has taken several deer. Most important every harvest has been recovered within 40 yards from point of impact. Most within 10 yards. .270 cal

A couple of years ago I picked up a Savage Axis XP in 308. Black synthetic stock with a couple of inserts so that the length of pull can be adjusted plus a Bushnel scope. First Savage I’ve ever owned, or even fired, but it’s a great bambi buster.

I don’t own a Savage rifle myself. However, I know plenty guys that do. Most of these rifles easily shoot 1/2 MOA or less. A huge thumbs up for me when comparing the bolt action; the Savage rifles are smooth as silk compared to the rough as a corn cob Ruger American.

Savage has been known forever as one of the most accurate, out of the box, rifles. Some people just hated them because of the very thing that made them so accurate, the barrel nut. But People serious about accuracy built their bench guns around them. Even today there are the same people complaining about them being ugly, or because they don’t cost enough for bragging rights at the range or camp. Whatever people, we have four Savages, from my OLD 110 30-06 to my wife’s newish 110 243. We will keep on enjoying the dependable accuracy and affordability, y’all keep spending on shiny so-so accuracy rifles. The targets don’t care about bling and the deer LOVE a shiny rifle!

The Savage 110 is a great straight out of the box rifle. I bought a Savage 110 over 35yrs. ago when my Dad came to hunt in Texas and brought two rifles. Unfortunately he decide to only take one to the deer lease and mixed up the rifle and bolt. Thus the first morning I had to stick him in a stand with my Remington while I ran to town in rural east Texas to pick up a cheap rifle for the extended weekend hunt. That rifle I purchased was a Savage 110 30-06 black synthetic stock combination with 3-9x40mm Simmons ?? scope. I have been hunting with that rifle ever since, it is not real pretty but shoots straight and is reliable. The scope got damaged and was replaced. I can not tell you how many deer and hogs it has taken or how many times it has been bounced or knocked over. I have multiple safes of Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Browing, Colt, Windham or ex-military, but the Savage is the first each season.

@@carlmarks6145 Probably not. Haven't had my hands on one or I'd tell you... But their budget lines have had plastic trigger guards for a while now. Really prone to breaking across the bolt hole if you over torque them. A lot of different companies make replacement steel ones though for 20 to 30 bucks. Just verify fitment first. Some savages have the bolt release built into the trigger guard and some like this one is up top near the bolt. The shape of this one is kind of a newer design but the bolt location is older, so not sure if the ones for sale currently fit or not. I'd ask before purchase. Or just replace the whole bottom metal. FYI, this hogue stock isn't the fully bedded chassis one. It's pillar bedded and I've read has a lot of flex in the foregrip area. It's a heavy stock too. With it and the barrel profile it's probably close to 9 lbs without optics if I had to guess.

I've always been a Savage guy, have 110s, my dad has a 110 and a 99e. I have to say that the last 5 to 8 years has slipped. I've been disappointed for the first time with some of the things put out there. The Savage Axis was a disaster with the trigger. Had to sell to get a Ruger American. Have three of those now and they all have killed about a dozen deer each. Didn't have enough faith in the Savage to even take it out. This one looks great. Maybe Savage can make their way back.

The Savage 110 has been one of the most underrated rifles ever, except by the people who shoot them regularly. I bought a 1959 Savage 110L (lefthanded) several years ago in 30-06 with the slim profile barrel. The stock had been modified poorly and bedded, so I wasn't bothered about modifying it. I purchased an E Author Brown varmint stock and a 6.5 Creedmoor accuracy barrel (28" varmint profile) and installed it myself, and I also installed a sled into the magazine making it a single shot bolt action. And Leupold one-piece scope mounts with a Athlon Talos 6-24×50 scope. It will shoot .30 groups at 100 yds consistently if I do my part (the rifle is more capable than me), hahaha. I was so impressed the first time l took it to the range that you couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a month.

I bought a 110 ultralite when it first came out. Shoots amazing groups but the action/bolt is gritty. But I will gladly take the accuracy all day every day and it isn't ammo picky

i have an old savage .243 i picked up on a discount because the stock needed finished. after "cleaning it up" i took it to a bench. on a stand and remote trigger... it made less than a 1" moa at 200 yards. for 300 bucks. not a bad purchase

It’s definitely competition to ruger American rifles, but I think the new gen ii will hold its own with the muzzle breaks coming standard, smoother bolts than previous, cerakote and the new stock configuration is more appealing to the eye imo.

Lol....the bolt (eh) and price point (eh)...I'll give it to the Savage....But your video made me get up and go to the range this morning (thank you for that)...My 6.5 Ruger Shot .25 and .31, two groups of three, back to back, factory ammo, off of bags and front bag only on the second group.(and I promise I am not the best shot..LOL). I have a Savage 110 in 7 mag...to introduce me to the round. When folks ask me about a rifle round they want to get into, I send them to Savage. You always post great videos, honest and fair. Thank you for that. Now I am going to look for that Savage. Seems to be hard to find it in that Green.
