My theory is that there is a very slow memory leak/something that isn't being garbage collected or variables not being overwritten after scene changes or every iteration of something happening in game. Software, especially games, can be very complex in these aspects with so many moving parts and game states being loaded into and out of memory. If we can figure out exactly which actions to repeat in order to recreate these scenarios, similar to the skybox loading, then it can for sure be taken advantage of

This was discovered in mario kart 64 years ago - in that game leaving the console on like this messes with the game timer's accuracy, and so it was determined it was an exploit and not allowed. Ultimately, doing this really falls into hardware manipulation, because the game state degrades away from what it's meant to be.

@@neoqwerty The real question is - Is this the hardware's fault or is it the software's fault? If its the software's fault (a memory leak or integer overflow, etc.) then maybe it could be allowed because exploiting bugs in the code is a normal thing speedrunners do all the time. If this is the hardware's fault, (overheating, magnetic interference, problems in the console's firmware, etc.) then it probably shouldn't be allowed because it probably is damaging the console, isn't a part of 'the game' itself, and would be difficult to reproduce to begin with.

I get why you wouldn't want to encourage people to leave their console on and go through this multi-day thing for the world record, but ultimately players make that choice themselves, and I think it would be a shame if this record was removed. Its such an interesting speed running story. Being the first to do something new should be rewarded. Doing new things is incredibly difficult.
@6dollerbill3 ай бұрын
There needs to be a seperate category for runs involving this method. If that new thing discovered is just leaving the console on for longer than it should be on, we're telling players "you want a record? Youll need to leave your console on for days before you can even try and compete" and that is something that kills excitement for a run and a community. Its the same reason why spongebob bfbb is a dead speedgame with a singular active runner, you need like just the right console, not just the right console, but a specific version of that console that can only be verified by opening it up, played on a weirdly specifically dirtied disc, and this sort of minutia KILLS interest in games really quick. Its not approachable, intuitive, or something that actually adds to the quality of the run, it is purely a multi-hour roadblock, stopping runners from getting a good time for reasons outside their own skill. This isnt the runners fault, obviously, but the time cost into this is unhealthy for competition
@AldoInza3 ай бұрын
There are categories that have to be ended. Like the hot plate speed run, you kill hardware and make future allowed runs impossible as you destroy hardware. Other categories mean you waste people's times and lives, so these are glitches that kill the community as people prioritize happiness over speedrunning.
@powwowken27603 ай бұрын
That's the thing though, you're wrong. When a new trick is found it always, without fail, comes down to embracing the trick no matter how frustrating and time consuming, or just not playing the game/category anymore. So while you say "it's a choice" I disagree, if it's allowed then no, it's not a choice, it's just the way everyone will have to play because that's how speedrunning works.

On the later point in the video, another thing that I think comes into play is that the more solved and more optimised a run gets, it also usually also gets less interesting to watch from a viewing perspective as well. I think that's an issue that many of the classic speedgames end up having. The OoT any% for example just isn't an entertaining run for most people to watch anymore. Goldeneye I think has ended up in a similar state, where even when there are records set, its still the same run, just hitting more lucky rng. There is only so long any game can last and as the old guard begins to retire, its time will likely come to an end alongside them.

I think the cause of the glitch is important; if it's a hardware fault (crooked cartridge, overheating, etc.) then it shouldn't be allowed, because the console isn't operating properly. 10:50 Alright, what you want to look into to crack this one is system memory utilization. When those effects cut out, it's probably because something tripped an overflow, or it kicks on some memory saving feature when things get hectic. Like if 10 guards are shooting it decides then to stop playing sounds for half of them, there's some reason it doesn't turn back off, and the condition persists as enabled in memory. Hard to test, but I don't think you'd need to go as far as reading the memory. Just having an idea how much is being used prior to the effect starting, which you'll probably be able to tell from a sudden and sustained drop in usage. From there you can confirm or eliminate that it has anything to do with the memory ceiling, and seeing what that graph looks like when it starts will help you narrow in on what exactly is causing it. What's clear here though is there are some situations where certain memory states are not reinitialized between menu load and stage start. They can either be stuck, locked, or it's a regular oversight on re-initialization. 14:30 Another point is that there are more games than there used to be. It dilutes.

At the very LEAST the 100% record should stand until there is proof that the audio glitch even is an advantage. With a player at perfect ace’s level, I have no hard time believing there wasn’t any advantage at all and he achieved the time fairly in a way that could be done consistently. That said, ALL new untieds deserve extremely close scrutiny, even from the most trusted of runners.
@cosmicskydragon3333 ай бұрын
And if you don't apply scrutiny then that is when top players get lazy and start cheating. It happens far too often.
@0-Keith-03 ай бұрын
Bond's running speed is directly tied to framerate. Higher framerate = faster run speed compared to the in game timer, this was discovered back during the streets 1:14 era that Karl Jobst covered a long time ago. Anything that causes the N64's CPU / GPU to have to process less information results in an increase in framerate (and train is a very laggy level). At the end of the day, the goldeneye community needs to ask themselves if it's good or bad for the category to require players to keep their hardware turned on for days at a time just in the hopes that it results in a glitched state where certain map/audio data is not loading, just to get a slight framerate increase that might shave off a second. Because that's a great way to kill competition within a category.
@generalesdeath58363 ай бұрын
@@0-Keith-0 I can see that perspective. It reminds me a bit of the “strategy” that involved pressing down on the circuit board of a naked P2 controller in order to make time pass at the ends of Train and Facility. If we think of it that way, then it’s like “kicking your console in just the right way” as one runner said. But it’s a little more grey only because we are discussing aging hardware here. That’s a complicated reality. What if an older N64 that is starting to decay ends up producing faster times than one better preserved, or vice versa? We are entering a new territory it seems where hardware affecting the results is an unavoidable reality. Is blowing on the cartridge now disqualifying, for example? I can’t get my copy of Majora’s Mask to even run without a few puffs. And I know that even if I had the advantage of a glitched system, that I couldn’t clear Train 00 agent anywhere close to Perfect Ace’s record.
@HappyBeezerStudios3 ай бұрын
@@0-Keith-0 and very long runs tend to have few runners and very few attempts. Like how Baten Kaitos 100% has a WR of over 14 days right now. There are 6 runs in total. A bit of food for thought. I'm not a speedrunner - nor have I ever made any attempts. In roughly 1998 I once accidentally bumped the Goldeneye 64 cartridge whilst playing a heated game with friends in multiplayer. Often this would cause the game to simply freeze and a restart was required but on this particular occasion the game continued to function but without audio. I noticed that with even 4 of us playing rockets there was almost zero lag. I could never replicate this again but its made me think over the years if anyone else had ever tried to use this to their advantage. Would being able to replicate this for the purpose of speedrunning be considered an exploit? As I said, food for thought.

As someone who used to have a very crappy computer and as someone who has dabbled into game development, the game NOT rendering sounds or vfx ABSOLUTELY has an effect on the gameplay and FPS of the game. Take League of Legends for example; turning down all the visuals is the most obvious way to improve FPS. However, turning off sound ALSO boosts the FPS because there's less that has to be rendered or played, this is something I did constantly and it gave me a very noticeable fps increase when playing on a potato.
@Wourghk3 ай бұрын
Considering the reason why sound isn't playing in this case, the application may still be attempting to play the sound, and indeed has played something, but in such a way that it's garbled or inaudible. In other words: the sounds might still be processed and consume runtime resources as normal, even if they're not output correctly, since the program is absolutely still trying to play them. We can't know without a log or some other form of analysis what's happening there.

@@Zultzify I highly recommend starting with episode 8 “Goose’s story” and go from there. The early episodes are a bit rough around the edges, and the quality really hits its stride around season 3. But that episode in particular is something special.

Very key topics of discussion. Great vid Goose. Good call with 2.x styles. Also made me think of paper marios shooting star summit trick with letting particles overflow. Where do you draw the line. Growing up i remember summers with full days of goldeneye and sm64 and some days the n64 would feel buttery. We’d always try weird stuff on those days and theyd allways seemed to eek out a little better. (We’d wake up early from playing so late that the n64 would still be warm from the sesh the night before.) Again good stuff man. Ive come back to this vid 3x now for the discussion

Interesting that you recall experiences like this from your youth, I think there are a lot of "one off" occurrences people had years ago in console games, which made no sense at the time, but actually kinda make sense with our more advanced breadth of knowledge today.

It should be quantifiable to check average framerate for the run vs average for similar runs taking the same path without the glitch. And 1% would be a big difference... 1:47 is 107 seconds, so 1% better would be about 1 second. This is assuming game speed is directly tied to framerate, you would need this quantifiable. I know FPS has a noticeable impact, which is why runners look at the ground as much as possible.

With goldeneye being released on Xbox and switch it definitely helps the game to survive and attract more players. I could see the community creating a separate category for the new consoles and accept times in those systems mainly for the purpose of keeping the game alive

9:30 "There is no way to measure or quantify it" Wouldn't it be possible to measure the difference between sounds on and sounds off via a TAS? If the inputs are the same every time, surely you could then see whether it has an effect on the speed or positions of the player.

Leaving the console on for a long period of time possibly causing the game to glitch is very similar to the Perfect Dark Ghost.

I personally see speedrunning as just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to challenge runs. Granted, when it comes to GE007 specifically, I don't know what would replace it. Randomizers? Competitive multiplayer? Maybe much like an art movement, we find a new way to express our skill or player expression to the games we love and speedrunning was simply our medieval period leading into a renaissance.
@PBTV_253 ай бұрын
From the perspective of a scorerunner, I think speedrunning will remain the most popular form of skill expression not only because of how accessible it is (big communities that already have plenty of resources to help new players learn and most any% categories being digestible enough for the average player, but also because of how universal Speedrunning is. Most average players are willing to do a bit of speedrunning for a game they like because going fast and being competitively efficient is just human nature, but aren't interested enough to do something as esoteric as say, minimum jumps. Additionally, people eventually find out that you can beat the game with x amount of jumps, so when thousands of people manage to accomplish it they start deciding to see who can do it faster. Heck, take Pizza Tower for example. Even in the (very small) score attack scene we still use the timer as a secondary value in-case of a score tie, and it's completely necessary because a few levels have easily achievable max scores. That said, things like score and competitive multiplayer are slept on for a lot of games. Randomizers though I think are starting to gain a lot of popularity but ultimately end up being Speedran.
@PBTV_253 ай бұрын
Also, worth mentioning, but with how much competition there is in the Speedrunning scene and how many leaderboards there are, it's just naturally going to attract more attention. Both socially/culturally and literally there's so much (digital) infrastructure to facilitate Speedrunning, to the point where I don't think people are going to flock to other things anytime soon.

This kinda reminds me about the Battle for Bikini Bottom speedrunners that put ketchup on their disc in order to make floor clips more consistent. If you are intentionally causing the console or cartridge to malfunction via overheating, overrunning, crocked cartridge, ect. It shouldn't be allowed. Assuming this even saves time which it hasn't been proven to yet.

There are ways of finding out whether & how sound effects or long on periods affects lag: a) by black box analysis b) by white box analysis. Black box analysis in this case involve methods like recording inputs simultaneous to av outputs & then comparing them side-by-side from different runs. Doing this efficiently involves using TAS. White box analysis in this case involve methods like code analysis: binary to source code disassembly, decompilation & figuring out what the code does for different inputs. Both are difficult but possible. One might also combine the two.

The way I see it is if you have to do prep work to get the console to do something unnatural it should not be counted as a glitch-less run. I’m all for separate categories but it should not be encouraged AND counted as a glitch-less run. This is almost on par with the pressing on the controller board strategy, or the putting your cartridge half way in strategy.

This is fascinating, a lot of audiophiles will leave on their amps/pre-amps because they notice the sound quality is better, I also do this and notice a small difference, mainly the time it takes to warm up the speakers is significantly faster. My speakers sound much more flat/not as wide at first and take a little to get to their full clarity. When I leave the equipment on all the time this speaker warm up takes 10-15 minutes, and when I have the system off and turn it on fresh the speakers take about 45 minutes to warm up. There are alot similarities with computers being left on all the time operating better.

Gentlemen, enjoy the time we have now with GoldenEye. There will be a day -most likely in our lifetime- where GoldenEye will be dead. There will be no more records to be had in speed running. Less and less people will know about this game as newer generations grow older. This game will become no more than a peice of gaming history in a museum. Enjoy these moments because one day it'll be gone.

New subscriber here but been watching your videos for a while. I love all the nostalgia of this it brings me back to when me and my buddies played this 24/7. I have a question though or maybe you have already done a video on this. Is there a possibility that the expansion pack had a play on performance when playing 007 even though it wasn't meant for that game?
