This insane new JavaScript API that became available this May in Chrome 113 is on the verge of becoming the new web standard and it will change the web forever. The web will work without the internet connection and all apps (mobile, desktop, tv, watch) will go extinct.

As long as there's a pop up asking for webgpu permission on a site that needs it then it's cool. If it just works by default then websites are about to mine Bitcoin using other people's system.
@odddirector
@odddirector Жыл бұрын
Interesting point! Don't know almost anything about Bitcoin mining but from what I've heard a single ARM won't cut it, so you'd need to either target very specific group of visitors who do a very specific job at NASA or find a way to mine stuff using multiple visitors' gpus, in a sort of torrent-like fashion.
@NoNameAtAll2

@@odddirector it won't be "a single ARM" - it will be gpu of every single visitor to the website all profits given only to the scam website owner, of course

Microsoft edge already has a tool that alerts you if a website has a high cpu usage, i think it probably won't be a problem, at the end browsers will start having a permission pop up asking to do intensive processes as you suggested

They already do that, they just use the CPU instead. There's already JavaScript (Obviously slow and bad), WASM (a tiny bit less slow and bad) crypto miners.

I don't think anyone's company wants their users offline, they would always need our data, so even if using all this tech offline would be possible, no one would want to sell it Also, another reason online GPU might not work is because I'm sure Nvidia loves to sell graphic cards to not just hardware companies but the final consumer. A lot of these tech are possible, but money won't let it evolve
@yassinesafraoui
@yassinesafraoui Жыл бұрын
Sure companies won't like handing their users all their algorithms to use them offline, but competition will force them to do that, meaning that eventually you'll have companies delivering similar products but able to operate offline, surely it will be hard for them to monetize their products without running everything in the server and making you pay for it, but that's the point of the game.

Wouldn't webgpu then use my GPU all the time causing way more power constantly when browsing and causing my phone and PC to get hot? Also causing more utilization for chrome in addition to already pretty high RAM usage. Sounds amazing for better content online but pretty demanding
@odddirector
@odddirector Жыл бұрын
I guess its the matter of right optimisation and time. WebGL was draining power like hell back in 2010 but now if its well optimised and is not something suuuper complex its fine. And also actually WebGPU is supposed to be more efficient and requiring less algorithms to do the same thing, so might even be batter than the current situation with WebGL in that regard.

LLM's in a browser? Not really. While sure, it'll be great to let LLMs be locally computed, through the browser, without any complicated setup, the truth is, that you'll either have a very dumb llm so it fits into the memory of the average gpu, and/or have a very, very slow llm, especially, if your gpus vram is not big enough and it instead needs to run on a cpu. Maybe some time in the future... Btw, its not chatgpt in your browser. there are vast differences in the capabilities of LLM's, with Chatgpt and gpt4 being the top of the line, that smaller llms cannot yet equal. And a LLM that is cut down to work on the web? Good luck with that...
@odddirector
@odddirector Жыл бұрын
It's doing a pretty good job offline, especially being just very recently released. But maybe I'm missing something. Good point about ChatGpt, thanks.

Web apps are better for cross-platform compatibility, development time and cost, seamless deployment, easier maintenance and bug fixes, easier updates and no installations, and additionally the social aspect of web has a very interesting potential.

No, native apps will absolutely not go extinct. Native apps are for people with standards about how much memory their computer can waste doing almost nothing. Running a browser to support a simple text editor is unacceptable to a lot of people. Hopefully they continue to push back and support only native apps for simple functions that shouldn't require a browser, but it will get harder as targeting the browser gets easier and more attractive to developers, and remains just as awful for the user. Maybe getting worse, since now video memory can be wasted as carelessly as system memory. Electron apps bring back RAM size pains that should have died in the early 2000s.

You think this is crazy, but eventually someone will develop an applet for the browser that can run arbitrary programs. Once that gets GPU support, we won't need separate browser applets, we can use the applets within that browser applet to do everything. In the limit, there will be an infinite tower of general purpose applets, each running a general purpose applet with GPU support. Or, maybe, browsers will become more integrated with the OS, a la TabFS, and, eventually, the browser and OS will become one and the same, and a website will be treated like any other directory, but external. If you're going to be doing everything through the browser, then the need for an OS doesn't make sense, but then, if you just have a browser with nothing lower, the browser is the OS, and browser applets are then applications running on the OS. Hmm... this sounds familiar, as if nothing really changes at all.
@odddirector
@odddirector Жыл бұрын
🤯and all of this will also probably be an interim stage between now and the time when devices themselves disappear and the os and web becomes shamelessly integrated in the reality.
