I would like to have some fidgets, so a sleeve in which you can bring some pre cut Mini Origami paper would be one of my add ons. Also, love the format of making it yourself. I have a corner rounding punch and the use of hole punches in different sizes, Liked your troubleshooting and the use of thinner elastic. What you recreated with your paper phone is very sim8lar to somethkng, wise people have done as early as the rennessance, it is called commonplace book and was around for so long, that your naming threw me off track a little. Paper phone is such a good idea to reach younger audiences, though. I have used an A5 version before, and did not know about the movement of bullet journalling or all the other forms of note taking. It only shows, that good working systems get to the right people one way or another.

@eastofawesome - I love & support your idea of PaperPhone! My PaperPhone is scrap paper held together with a binder clip 😝 I’ve always loved ‘salvaging’ scrap paper, so I keep a stack smallest to largest (usually a half sheet). I like the idea of puzzle apps. I’m partial to word finds & jumbles. Also an address book/contacts. I have formatted a shopping list that I print on both sides of a piece of paper such that I get 4 lists per sheet. The list is made of two columns separated into categories. I circle the item I need or write in the specific item. Thanks for sharing this! I’ll keep following this project 🤗

I have my bookshelves of journals from the last 20+ years. The phones I once had are long ago turned into useless junk on a scrap heap somewhere. PS, I write everything sequencially. The curating comes from the way I label each entry: a box with an icon inside. When when the book is full I make an index system by category. All the journals I stitch-bind and make hardcovers for. So it's better than what you buy. Also, I'm 'allergic' to lined pages. So I can choose the paper I want. Sketchbooks obviously different paper than the journal pages. So glad there are people like you bringing awareness to the lost habit of tactile writing .
@eastofawesome2 ай бұрын
oh wow, that system sounds super nice. especially since I am still struggling with finding a good archival process. I would absolutely love to see a few pictures of what you described here ….
@richaellrАй бұрын
Please share more info on what you use! Maybe a video??
@iune8165Ай бұрын
wow, I'd love to see how your system works too. So when the book is full do you tear the page and make a separate journal for each "icon"/category ?
@kenneth1767Ай бұрын
@@iune8165 I keep the books intact. Very often I write not knowing where the thoughts will lead, and after the writing I then can categorize it with an icon according to its subject matter or purpose. I later make a reference of the diverse subjects written about by the entries in the index on the last few pages of the journal with page numbers. I have learned over the years that this really helps to organize our 'random thoughts' and a structure of our thoughtscape begins to emerge. So let's say the subject is Aphorisms, in the back index I compile under the Aphorisms icon all the page numbers in the journal where I wrote an aphorism. I like to keep my writing as a sequencial record, because memories also trigger where I can later find certain thoughts. The curating of these entries will come at the end of each book when I make this index system. I've found that over the years I've developed specific categories which are represented by icons inside a square. For example Business Ideas are represented by the "💵" icon, epiphany represented by "⭐", something I heard as "💬", chapter or book ideas as "📖", questions I have "Q", etc. Keep the icons simple. I also name each journal, and give it a number equal to my age, so my present journal is Bleu55, and this helps in later cross-referencing where I can say "refer to Bleu55 pg 251" This system of journaling, developed because I used to travel alot and needed everything in one book. I hope this helps.
@kenneth1767Ай бұрын

Having separate 'apps' really struck a chord with me. With bullet journals, I have a hard time navigating them and finding things I've written down previously. Welcome to life with less algorithm control. Think with your head, write with your own hand, archive manually. Forget battery life and power outages. Learn to structure information on paper. Thanks for the good tips...
@eastofawesome2 ай бұрын
yes man! I think the part of archiving is the one where I lack the most. Hard to find something that you noted down in some notebook sometines a few years ago ... Do you nave any specific tips on that front?
@erkkikarvinen17832 ай бұрын
I don't know if it's the best way, but I use the Cornel page as a base. In the larger column on the right, I write everything that comes to mind. In the left column, I put keywords that describe or summarize the idea. It is easier to browse individual keywords than to read all the articles later.
@erkkikarvinen17832 ай бұрын
@@eastofawesome It is important and easier if you also define which category the matter belongs to. My whole philosophy is based on the same as the army's carrying system for the individual soldier. There is a big backpack with everything a man needs. It also has a patrol backpack for day patrolling and smaller pockets for various items. Notes work the other way around, they consist of a small to a larger whole. Starting with post it notes, pocket notebook 14 x 10 cm, A5 folder with annual calendar + different categories (6 tabs), year's summary in A4 folder.
@jillymonson2 ай бұрын
YOU are the app. Also, I love the tinker space you have. Appreciating that it's not a stripped down minimalist "clean" (ie empty) space; it's let's put our hands on stuff space.
@erkkikarvinen17832 ай бұрын
It is good to remember that most of the notes belong to the lived life, which you will never need after that day, moment, month or even year. That's why I don't carry my past life with me every day, but if necessary, I search for individualized information from the basic archive according to keywords and category. It frees me to live in this day and my mind remains open to new creative thoughts... 🤔

Many of these are just thinking back to my childhood and throwing a twist on some of them for modern function and some are new ideas like the light crystal which came out around 2010. One thing I used to practice as a kid was tiny writing through a magnifying glass. It was a challenge but it was fun in a way. It's a practical use of space for something like this as well. Everything is organized between the main "deck" case, a 3 ring binder with 9-slot card sleeves for a perpetual calendar, and a card box to organize project information. It's a productivity/note taking system that has inherent mutual compatability with anyone else who uses the blank card system. This may be more like a "phone", and in a sense you can create programs that run within the system (through functions) as well as add extensions (like the "perpetual calendar". thank you! I think another aspects why I like film is that it makes each shot something special again where on the smartphone they all vanish into the digital abyss so easily ...

I’m going out right now to buy some ice cream. May have to get various types to find the best. After I finish the ice cream, I’m going out for a turkey. P.S. You don’t have to rip. Just choose the direction, if there is one, that bends the easiest. That’s the grain.
@eastofawesome2 ай бұрын
hope the ice cream was as awesome as I think you deserved it. Thanks for the info about the grain … but I think with the huge cardboard sheets I still cant feel the difference…

0:09 wait, is that guitar riff at the begging the beginning of "Cripple creek - The Band" ??? It sounded like a heavy version of that 😂 I expect to hear "When I get off of this mountain, I know where I wanna go" haha

It would work great for certain religious days as well. Or family screen time breaks.

So you made a notebook. Well done.

You should add an app with pages you can tear out so you can text your friends.
@MissDeadLucky13Ай бұрын
first there was paper, then there were phones, now there's paper phones! please make these as customisable kits. no app, an actual kit where you can choose what colour cover, paper, thread, type of paper used, etc and people can then build their choices themselves

I ordered both the zine and a physical copy, how do I get the zine?
@eastofawesomeАй бұрын
Hey Daniel, thank you very much for the order! From your username I can quite confidently guess the correct order and confirm that I have send out the physical copy the day following your order. Download links to the digital copy are in both the confirmation email and the „completed“ mail that where sent to the email you provided during the checkout. If you did not get them perhaps check your spam folder or send me a mail and I will send them out to you again.

You having to pull your phone for the calculator reminds me I used to have an A5 binder planner type thing with a thin, binder-type calculator, something like that would be awesome for one of those books! Totally forgot about that thing till now lol

Such a cool idea. I‘ll definitely be looking around for one of those!

Great video! I’ve made my own notebooks and books before and was looking for a new bookbinding project! any links for the specific kind of cork leather you are using? Thanks.

Thank you. the Cork I used here and was very happy with I ordered from this (Germany-based) webshop: www.korkstoffe.de/en … don‘t know if they have affordable international shipping

I want to see this dude make a "paper TV", and then it be just a hipster paper craft box that you cram random stuff into while it has zero fundamental functions of a television set. You know just like what a phone is fundamentally about is there in the name; it does things with sound, preferably transmits sound over distances sound wouldn't otherwise travel at given that the full word is "telephone".
@nimbusstormysheep95532 ай бұрын
What if he like made a box full of those paper cartoons where you flip the pages really fast to make the pictures move?
@srob6168Ай бұрын
I think the paper tv could be books and news paper
@AnEntropyFanАй бұрын
@@srob6168 It certainly could be, but what I was getting at is the clickbait nature of this video; where the thing isn't actually analogous to the main function at all. Writing is a decent analogy for television (not the least because television came from its lineage), someone has converted an impression of other senses to text to easily transmit them at a distance and then your mind is reconstructing some interpretation of the original, say, visual and auditory experience/story. Had the title been "This Notebook System is Better Than Your PDA" it might even be accurate, but chances are you're thinking "what's a PDA?" and 2 out of a sum total of 4 people with PDAs in 2024 would click on it.
