I’m happy you found someone willing to do what it takes to repair your house. Yes Rachel, the Christmas tree. Four years ago we had some big renovations in our house-had to move most of our belongings out, and only got to move back in 5 days before Christmas! There’s a lot more to the story but I’ll leave it at that! Long story short-we moved back in enough to be comfortable, put up the Christmas tree, our kids arrived on the 23rd and we had a wonderful Christmas!

So cool to see the source of the floor problem! We had to jack up the floors in our 115 year old house, and Rachel brought me back to that moment when the plaster in the kitchen cracked and rattled down inside the walls. I panicked!😂

Those pork chops looks delicious. Can you do a video comparing the breeds of pigs you’ve raised, and which is easier to raise, taste better, leaner and fatter? Also what cuts do you like and use, and the cuts you didn’t like?

Oh love these old homes. Our basement "collapsed" in the flood of 08, I'm in WI it was the one where houses were floating down the River. Anyway one wall came in the basement, we had the limestone walls too. So we got lucky and found a company that went wall by wall and jacked it up. They then put in a poured basement. We have cracks all over now as well, they still need to be fixed. Nothing is square in old homes but I wouldn't trade it for the new junk any day. 😊

The timing you posted this video is perfect; we bought an 1860s house in PEI just over a year ago and the ground floor has some definite sagging, all towards the sides of rooms where the old radiators were. One room has a large gap between the floor and the baseboard. The basement is a dirt floor. We've had a few contractors in to look at it and give us estimates and ideas, but we haven't gotten to having it taken care of yet, with other more pressing work having had to be done. Hopefully next year! I'm pretty clueless about this kind of stuff so it was nice to see everything shown and explained.

So interesting. My husband is a home builder and said that the house being built they way it was is called "Balloon framing" (from first to second floor). So the second story is held up on the edges by a ledger board instead of resting on a top plate like tradional building. Sounds like the advantages is less settling and disadvantages are that fire will spread more quickly unless you have a fire-stop built into the boards. We are excited to see the next video! Blessings on a quick turnaround for the completion!

Todd & Rachel, I'm so happy that you have repaired the floors to be SAFE! Oh my, that is a lot of deflection if your tv was shaking when walking through the room... The kind of framing you were describing is called balloon framing, instead of platform framing (as is more common now). I love your garden and kitchen videos, keep it up. It'll be exciting to see what you do next year with your year of rest for the garden.

It's called balloon framing when the wall studs span all floors. It's not great for fire supression - if a fire starts downstairs, it'll travel upstairs quickly thru the wall cavities. The framing more typically used now is called platform framing.

We have a house that was built in 1930 and in 2004 we had a 100 year flood. Our basement filled to the ceiling and of course the old river rock started to bow. We raised the house 39 inches and put a new basement under it. We still can see a few places where the plaster cracked or moved even though we repaired it all. Only we notice it, anyone else would never know. Good luck with all of this! It will look amazing when it is done.

Hopefully the floor guys have dust bags on all their sanders, big and small. Even still, make sure you cover everything, the walls and furniture and such with sheet plastic. Otherwise that fine dust will go everywhere. If done right, be very little dust. Looking good and once all the floors are sanded and sealed, it will really look nice...

Your basement looks like mine. I have those metal support poles under my beams. Can't wait to see the finished floor. When your done you should think about spray foaming the rim joist. I just had it done. And it got rid of the drafts and made my house warmer. ( I was gonna do the whole ceiling but one professional told me if I had storage like canning jars in there not to do whole ceiling just joist. Said it would make the basement too cold and jars could freeze.

The problem with balloon construction was fire. There is no horizontal piece (fire stop) in the frame to stop a first floor fire from reaching the 2nd floor. Maybe they can use a steel I-Beam after your floor is straightened. That will reduce the number of posts. Is the floor now cracking because of the posts? You might need footings under the permanent posts. You are blessed with the patina of real aged oak floors. Shiny or satin finish?? Did you fix the squeaks first?
