This Old House

3 жыл бұрын

The new season kicks off with a ranch house in Westerly, RI. Tom and Kevin tour the house and admire the paneling. Richard tours the basement with Jeff. Jenn and Roger consider landscape options.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.
The crew arrives at the new project in Westerly, Rhode Island - a sturdy 1940's ranch that was built and occupied by the same family since the new homeowners, Scott and Shayla, acquired it. They give Kevin and Tommy a tour of the knotty pine paneled interior.
Builder Jeff Sweenor and his architectural design team have been working with Scott and Shayla on a transformation to take advantage of the distant view of the water and they show it to Kevin on the computer.
Norm travels to California to see where the quintessential ranch house evolved.
Jeff takes a tour with Richard to see the existing garage and basement. A renovation as big as this will call for a new and efficient heating and air system as well as an updated septic system.
Outside Jenn and Roger walk the property and discuss what can be done with the varying landscape.
Jeff invites a local Habitat for Humanity crew to come and salvage a host of building materials, including the knotty pine paneling, before the demo begins.

At the end, it seemed like they were talking about using the existing cabinets, then a habitat for humanity guy stepped in on que and listed what they want to take including the knotty pine, then Kevin was like whoa, slow down, then the vultures swooped in. As a born New Englander whose relatives were employed by a maker of high end precision tools, I have watched TOH for years. My dad was the guy the other guys came to when they were stuck. He had no specialized training, but his dad also made tools. One thing we knew: if he did it, it was done right. Watching Tommy makes me smile...recognize the approach.

Why in the world would you need 3,000 square feet for 4 people? American design is always bigger bigger and bigger, it would be nice to see smaller design with a creative use of space. TOH should do a build on a smaller home around 1,000/1,500 square feet, you know, something the average American could afford. These high dollar builds are getting old in my opinion.
