The lackluster mid-century box is a modern marvel once again. Kevin and Tom arrive to assess the transformation of the exterior of the house. After using the new front entry and walking through the mudroom, they take in the heart of the home, opened up to allow for a spacious working kitchen and eating area with clear sightlines into the living room. Homeowners Sunil and Neha celebrate the high ceilings, abundance of glass, balconies and hanging gas fireplace. Sunil takes Tom upstairs to the bedroom level, where they now have a master suite with ample clothes storage and a bathroom with sleek modern accents. In their daughter Neha’s room, installer Zak is finishing up his work on the motorized window shades. In the basement, Richard shows Kevin the multiple mechanical and electrical closets, laundry room, gym area and garage. Charlie joins the discussion to discuss the heated driveway to help melt snow and prevent flooding. On the lower living level, Sunil and Tom tour the guest suite, complete with a kitchenette, bathroom and private entrance. Outside, Jenn shows Kevin the new patio with sitting wall, and explains their plans to develop proper drainage for rain. Back inside, Sunil and Neha show Kevin around their dining area, pantry and kitchen, where panels hide appliances and a custom hood adorns the gas and induction cooktops. Everyone joins to celebrate the completion of the project.

i agree, unlike some other network shows like the dudes who flip houses, or people who have their neighbors remodel their homes.. there's always a shtick and a bit of cynicism behind the making of those types of shows, in contrast, TOH has always been about teaching of new materials and methods of installation. And Notice that having an energy efficient home isn't a political thing.

When I saw episode one of this build I was pretty bummed out - No interest in this type of home, and no chemistry with the homeowners. Very glad this one is in the books, even though some of the build was interesting from a technical standpoint. BTW - Kevin, Tom, Richard (I’ve been watching enough that we are on first name basis when I refer to you in conversations with others; they of course say “Whose Tom?”) - Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kevin, You bring the perfect cheerful attitude to this show; a lot of us would like to be in your position working along side subject matter experts in home construction/renovation. What a great vantage point to learn. Tom, you also bring a great disposition, subject matter expertise, and the perfect attitude in wanting to make things really good and make people happy with the result. An inspiration. (Please keep doing the apprenticeship thing, it is so good to have the young folks involved and asking questions!). Richard, you are a great cheerleader/promoter for what’s easily one of the most exciting parts of modern construction. I love the episode in Germany and seeing their mechanical rooms. Finally, Jenn, you are a great addition to the show. Tough to step in for someone else, but you got it.

They needed 25ft of ducting because they could not vent the kitchen hood out the ceiling and then all the different locations for the mechanicals which might make troubleshooting such a setup problematic. I would say that you would really have to love the look of the house to justify the extra cost. It would have been probably easier to just tear down and start over. I look at all of the workarounds ($$$$$) and compromises needed to make this a function and I wonder if only "this old house" could do such a project without it ballooning into a big overpriced elephant that you would never recover the cost of on resale. Made for a great tv show not sure about a house though.
@bg104
@bg104 4 жыл бұрын
Lost Comma yeah, it would have been easier to tear it down, but the city historical commission would not allow it. They noted the restrictions in the first episode. If I lived in the area, or was on the commission, I would have voted they tear it down and build something that fit in with the original historic homes in the neighborhood. That angular “modern” house sticks out like a sore thumb among all of those beautiful, late 19th century homes in the area.
@TheGuyThatEveryoneIgnores
@TheGuyThatEveryoneIgnores 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the mechanical location problems would not have existed if the house was designed better, that is, with the mechanical systems in mind. It looks like the tradespeople had to figure out where to put the mechanical systems after the structure was already built. Also, the homeowners should have been informed of these things when the house was being designed.

Yeah despite the house being from the 1950's they didn't really incorporate anything from that time period. They wanted everything that is super modern and a lot of tech...didn't seem like mid century to me, felt like the Jetsons house. It was a very good house though, it just seem like a waste to have a small garage from all that money they spent on it
@morlamweb
@morlamweb 4 жыл бұрын
@@lucky1206 They don't have to incorporate anything from the 50's into the house; and given that few things from that time period are useful today (and full of carcinogens, usually), doing so would've been a useless affectation. Instead, it looks like they went with the spirit of mid-century modern. In 1957, the house was cutting-edge; what they did was make it cutting-edge circa 2019 and suitable for living in the 21st century.
@williamnettleton3413
@williamnettleton3413 4 жыл бұрын
@@morlamweb you really don't understand home theming and design. Mid century modern home from the 50s, would mean a better design frankly that incorporated elements from the 50s. All they did was have siding on the outside. They literally didn't keep any 50s modern style. Even the siding was garbage because it was so different that it almost clashed hard with the original home. Nothing inside kept original 50s style design elements. None. They are in a historic district, that's why they live there. Name recognition. The outside had to keep the theme, and it barely did. Getting approved by the city and the district. Nothing inside had to be original styling with modern materials. No modern home in a 50s to 70s style is actually used with old materials and type of building. It's using modern materials and modern building styles to get the same look.

Compared with Season 42 (Cape Ann), this is the Ikea special. No offense to the homeowners, but this looks very out of place, especially in Brookline. I hope they enjoy this home.
