Norm uses old pine from a local sawmill to make a coffee table. Mauro teaches apprentice Kathryn to whitewash the knotty pine paneling. Tommy and Jeff build a pergola for the deck. Kevin helps with a shutter assembly. Electrician Ben shows apprentice De’Shaun how to light the pergola.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib....
Kevin is on the Westerly jobsite and takes a look at the final touches happening on the first floor.
It's about time to think about furniture. Homeowners Scott and Shayla asked Jeff's team to design a special two-tiered oval coffee table using some old boards they pulled from a nearby family sawmill.
Jeff invites Norm to his workshop where they plane the boards and join them with mortises and tenons. They cut out an oval with a jigsaw and route the edges. After Jeff makes the legs and stretchers, Scott joins in to help with the final assembly.
At the house, Jeff finds Mauro and Kathryn in the playroom where they're getting ready to whitewash the original knotty pine with an oil-based stain. This treatment will brighten up the entire room and give the old pine a new look.
Outside, Jeff joins Tommy and Garrett at the new pergola. The posts have already been fastened down to the deck structure. They put in tapered columns over the post and set the PVC beams on top and finally the PVC lattice. The new pergola will provide shade in the summertime.
Over at the 1840s Idea House, Kevin learns about historically accurate and operable shutters that are also made of PVC material. Project foreman Gordan Jacobsen shows him how they're assembled, louver by louver, and then they are painted and installed.
Back at the house, electrician Ben Giles is putting linear LED strips into the newly built pergola. Apprentice De'Shaun is there to observe and help.

@@holdemNE1 I never managed to build any of his projects. I've mainly held onto memories of biscuit joiners and dove tails etc. When I bought my first house a few years ago I decided that if it didn't have space for a wood shop, then I wouldn't buy it. Now I have a 300 square foot wood shop that I am steadily filling with new and old tools. Norm really made a lasting impression on me as a child. He's a legend in my book

Would like to have seen the coffee table finished, close up and I loved the pergola - just what I'd said we need when/if we ever add al fresco to the side of our house - I do love all that can be done with LED lighting options these days - quite magical - would be nice to see that in the dark too!

As I said on the last video they did on LEDs: NEVER trust the adhesive that comes on LED strips to hold their weight. It almost ALWAYS degrades. ESPECIALLY outside. (it can be used if you are going to place the leds facing up to keep them in place mind). Note that they used a mechanical method to keep the LEDs up. The channel cover snaps into place, and when (not if, WHEN) the adhesive fails, it will only sink ~.25 inch to touch the cover.

I honestly dont like the fact that they whited out the boards at ~11:00. I think staining them a tad bit darker from the original would have made a much better contrast. Instead they went almost white, and it looks like a rinsed off rush paint job.

@@brianglade848 Most/many shutters on homes nowadays (the last home we owned that had shutters was in the panhandle of Florida) are not functional. Those shutters on our FL home were just screwed to the brickwork--they were not operable (couldn't be closed--they were always "open"). Weird too, as we lived in a hurricane zone, and it would have been helpful to close the shutters during storms.
