Fantastic build. Loved the 3d printed set up jig. Never would have thought about using that silicone bronze filling rod to make up the steady rest fingers. Might have to keep that in the back of my mind next time I need a small amount of bronze.

Thanks for stopping by mate 👍 I'm enjoying your fly press build, and I have to confess your steady rest video helped me out with this one.

Nice work Steve! Great to see another video, but you don't have to be so fancy with the editing. OK, I know that some of it is a homage to This Old Tony, but in moderation please. I envy your lathe, mill, 3D printer, welders and welding skills. Your 3D printer is really coming into it's own in terms of usefulness and that is one of it's advantages. Just whip up a design and hit print, and before you know it you have a quality welding positioning jig! I swear that chicken is there to spy on you! Are you sure that she is not a cyborg chicken with cameras for eyes? 😂 Stainless steel rollers are unusual. Food service equipment perhaps? Mark from Melbourne Australia

I disagree - I can certainly see inspiration from ToT, but Steve's style is his own. Similar senses of humour, for sure, but plainly we also have a similar sense of humour and shared interests because we are here watching. I keep toying with the idea of giving Tony a heads-up to come look at Little Aussie Rockets because while similar they are distinct and I think Tony would get a kick out the content here (which he wouldn't if it was just like his). Keep it up, Steve!

Great job Steve, did your steady sing? I noticed the filled in gaps right at the end.
@LittleAussieRockets11 ай бұрын
It did a little bit. Putting some straps along the back helped but speeding up the feeds actually made the biggest difference. I ended up running 0.64 microns per revolution and around 300 rpm I'm still thinking about filling the gaps with molten lead to see if it makes any difference. Once I got the speeds and feeds figured out it basically worked like I bought one.

Need to also mention AvE's Bridgeport. I like Abom but his content is a little too dry and longform for me. AvE's language is a bit rough, but small doses I find tolerable - and he still is cleaner than a lot of Aussie workplaces I have been in..

What a beautiful old piece of equipment from many years back. What’s even better is that you are very creative with your building, whatever you do. Even though you are not the best in the world, my hat is off to you and I’m amazed at what you’ve accomplished and created for us. It’s the creativity and heart that you put into each piece of work that makes it awesome. I look forward to seeing many more of your videos.

Nice design and build. I've seen then with a hinge opening to allow you to install it with something already on the lathe. But either way seems to be okay. When I build one I think I will opt for roller bearings to help eliminate metal on metal on the project I am working on. I realize you only adjust it to just barely touch, but I like the roller option... Just me...
@hersch_tool11 ай бұрын
Nicely done! I think this is a project that many can benefit from. Steady rests have a habit of disappearing when machines change hands, and looking for one on the used market after the fact can easily cost as much as the machine itself... Great use of the 3D printer as well. I've also found it to be a great additional to the shop toolbox. EDIT; nice tig welds 👍

Hmmmm... long lathe ✅ steady rest ✅ birds (chook, not butcher) ✅Qld,AU ✅overhead crane ❌ Not quite Curtis compliant but getting there. 😃 Wonderful temporary solution that looks good enough to be permanent, well done.
@LittleAussieRockets11 ай бұрын
I do enjoy Curtis's work. Always learning something when watching his videos. I'm actually considering building a swinging gantry to go above the lathe. If that round bar was any heavier I would have needed it.
@pendarischneider11 ай бұрын
@@LittleAussieRockets Yes, old shed with added gantry - that would be quite a project. And we only get one back per lifetime. Probably doesn't need to be done in stainless 😉
