I still have my Speedmaster that was built in late 1968. I got it as a BD gift 10 days after the Apollo 11 lunar landing. It's one of the very early .861 cal. versions. I wore it a lot during the 1970s and then less in later years. I had it "tuned up" twice, once in the 1980s and again in the 1990s. I keep it in a safe and only wear it occasionally. It still looks brand new. What's cool about it is that there are no references to the moon on the back of the watch because we had not yet gone there when it was built. It's got the original dot over ninety. I use "polyWatch" to keep the Hazilite crystal scratch free. I intend to keep it in the family and eventually give it to my son with strict instructions to give it to his son someday. I trust it will still work well 50 years from now.

I have owned a Speedmaster since 1974 (which I guess makes it a cal. 861), and you might enjoy the story of how I got it. I was a commercial photographer in Copenhagen and one of my clients was the Danish Omega distributor J.C. Filtenborg. However, despite watch photography being a speciality of mine (and I come from a family of watch makers), I did not wear one because leather straps have always reacted unpleasantly with my skin and I had at the time not found a metal strap that didn’t bother me. I had been using pocket watches, but given up on those too. This became awkward at a time when Polaroid film was starting to be used in commercial photography for test shots and on-site client approval. The real exposures were on film, of course, and had to be processed before the client could see them. But Polaroid, especially in colour, had to be timed quite accurately in order to serve as a reliable test shot, so I became notorious on shoots for always asking someone else to time them for me. In the end my watch client got fed up and told me to go to the store room and pick out a watch - any watch, as long as it got me to wear one. The only watch in their collection that met my needs was the Moon Watch, but my client was true to his word and gave it to me. I wore it for more than 20 years, until I switched to a Breitling Aerospace which is titanium and therefore much lighter to wear, but I still cherish my Omega Moon Watch.

Superb video as always! I struck up a conversation with a gentleman last year who noticed my Speedmaster. He was also wearing a Speedy and was curious as to why a younger guy would pick a Speedmaster over other watches. I told him about my love for NASA and Apollo, and he immediately understood. He then told me about how his Speedmaster was a gift from his old poker buddy Buzz. Yes, that Buzz. He told me lots of great stories about hanging out with Buzz and how he's the real deal. Thanks for sharing your insights into Omega's history and the Speedmaster, as always masterfully told. And it was extremely gratifying to hear you refer to Destin's Smarter Every Day series of videos on the lunar missions. As I noted in your other AMW video posted today, it seems the love of all things engineering and mechanical and science and space is what brings us enthusiasts together. Sure a smartwatch can do a hundred things and never lose accuracy, but it just would never have the pull, the romance, the sheer elegance and emotions we techno/engineering/science geeks derive from finely made watches (even quartz watches).

The minute I got the watch & held it in my hands for the first time, I said "f3ck that" this is going on my wrist right now. I love this watch, moreso than the watches I'd always wanted to own when growing up. It knocked my Santos from its perch as the top dog, it also sent my Oyster Perpetual back in its box. I don't know why it's managed to do this but it just has. There's not a chance in hell I'll part with it anytime in the future unless it's for another Speedy.

@@imlost19 I don't swim, and I think most people who buy dive watches are more into making a fashion statement rather than using it for its intended purpose. How many swimmers and divers actually need 300m water resistance? If I were to wear a watch with a rotating bezel, I would have choose a GMT watch with an extra 24-hour hand and a bi-directional bezel, it'smuch more practical for everyday use on solid land than a uni-directiopnal bezel dive watch.

I’m a watch enthusiast, love Omega, and love the idea of marking time or achievement with watches or clocks. I’ve always wanted to own an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch with a sapphire face. Not only because I consider it an absolutely iconic wristwatch and Omega’s best, but also because of my great interest in science and the space program. But I’ve held off now deliberately for the past 23 years. Why? I’m also a distance big distance runner, typically running around 30 races a year, including 3 full marathons each of those. From the start, my biggest goal has been to qualify for the Boston Marathon and run it. But after 61 marathons trying, over 23 years, I haven’t quite done it, coming as close as just 3 to 3 ½ minutes short. But my plan has always been that when I do, to immediately go out and buy this watch. I even check ahead before each marathon at the closest Omega boutique to be sure that it is in stock. Unfortunately over the years the price has gone up quite a bit (for me at least), and my career and the economy has floundered a little. But even if I need to go into a little more debt to make it happen, this is still my plan, and I can’t wait for that moment. The name itself will be literally symbolic of my achievement.

Andrew - thanks for the re-re-re-re-review. It's as-always, well written and on-point. I physically watched Armstrong step out on to the surface of the moon as a wide-eyed seven year old, and that event, along with all of the Apollo and preceding space programs Mercury and Gemini changed the course of my life and set of interests forever. I've always yearned for a Speedmaster Professional, and last year after one of your reviews I actually went and bought a Heselite version of the 3861 to stay as close to the original as possible. I love the Heselite's distortions and although I've already scratched it up, they're all MY scratches and it looks like the daily wearer that it should. The case and bracelet, in contrast, haven't seen a mark. It has character and shows that it's worn to be used and loved. The solid caseback with the proper hippocampus and moon-related script is so more desirable tome than the sapphire version. It's been an absolutely wonderful experience for me, and along with the tech I have that history on my wrist with me every day now. It's reliable to less than +two seconds irrespective of what I'm doing each day, and as such I flatly refuse to ever sell it now. Grail watch? Admittedly, yes. Worthy of that? Hell yes.

The moon watch was the first watch that struck me as a cut above the rest in a watchmakers shop window as a kid in the late 70s. It looked like a big professional instrument but Strangely familiar. Then found out some years later this was the very watch I saw on Buzz Aldrins space suit in the 1969 moon landing just a few weeks after my 5th birthday that year. I think many of my generation have a strong subconscious link and memory to this watch, even amongst those who are not aware and don’t care. The power of subliminal product placement and marketing must never be underestimated.

I bought a limited edition Tokyo Olympics 2020 Speedmaster, importing it from Japan. The games were of course deferred to 2021. It was still boxed, original price tag attached, amazing presentation white wooden box. I spent weeks researching it and even with import tax, it cost less than similar used mint versions available in Europe. I think it's a stunning watch.

Completely agree - for all the reasons you mention and the overall aesthetic. IMHO, the layout and proportions of the face and case are the best of any watch, anywhere - it is a *perfectly* balanced and proportioned watch face. Then, matched with a beautifully finished case and bracelet, display back (sapphire sandwich), amazing 3861 movement, affordable and available, and complements a sharp suit or jacket as easily as jeans and a t-shirt. No contest.

I bought mine a week ago (the sapphire sandwich version). I liked it even more after I had it sized and on wrist. As others have said, it's got such a classical design and very versatile in that it goes with anything. This is my second Omega after buying a Seamaster 300m a couple of years ago. But I am now partial to the Speedy!

I love the history of Omega and the Speedmaster series. When it came down to buying my first Omega though, I had to go with the Speedmaster ‘57 with the automatic movement. They are substantially more (around $9k USD) but I like the dial and bracelet a lot more than the Professional. I’m also an Auto kind of guy. I recently acquired a Seamaster Aqua Terra on a rubber strap for a casual knock about but it shares equal time on my wrist with the Speedy. When you visit an Omega Boutique you are treated in such a wonderful manner by people who love the brand as much as you do. There’s no Rolex or AP games. If it’s in the case, it’s in stock for sale that day. I spent a few hours there last time when getting the Aqua Terra and could have spent even longer. I can’t say enough positive things about the Omega customer experience.

Love my Moonwatch (with Hesalite crystal), I treated myself five years ago when I got a promotion at work, and I've worn it regularly ever since. It still makes me smile every time I look at it. There are many great watches, but for me, the Moonwatch is the GOAT.

My most expensive watch. I wanted to treat myself after the birth of my daughter (after all that hard work I did!) and had essentially narrowed it down to the Speedy and the El Primiero. As much as to this day I still want an El Primiero, the speedy just hits different... more humble, less flashy, with higher legibility. A watch that can be worn casually or dressed up... it's surprisingly versatile. I didn't get that vibe with the El primiero. Then I did the "wrong" thing and got the sapphire sandwich. I don't care about the "authenticity" aspect... I'm not going to the moon anytime soon. As you've seen from this video the movement is unrivalled at this price point. I need to be able to look at it. And still do this day, everytime I wear it 3 years later.

Same, mine was my daughter's birth watch (and my most expensive to date). I initially wanted it to be a Rolex Explorer, but impossible to get, even STILL!. As soon as I saw the announcement of the new Speedmaster, I HAD to have it - that tapered bracelet - YES. Called my OB and they put me on the list to get one, and when they called, I was the first to get the Hesalite but not the first for the Saphire, apparently, the three they got initially were pre-sold instantly before arriving. I also really like and want an El Primero, technically I would probably get along better with the 38mm sizing, but the Speedmaster wears more like a 40mm at least. I will never sell it and will cherish it forever due to the connection of the birth of my daughter (which I wore witnessing her birth).

I was on the fence between the Breitling Navi-TimerSpeed Master Professional. After comparing both, no contest, the Moon Watch won hands down. I like everything about this Icon of the industry, but more importantly, I find having a tactile representation of an instrument associated with Mankind’s greatest achievement right there on my wrist is priceless. I used to own a Rolex GMT Master II, and I really enjoyed that watch, but the pedigree of this watch just blows my old Rolex out of the water.

The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. Got my Speedmaster 3861 in Munich on 05/22 and it was a life-changing experience. I come from a Tissot and needed to get some kind of amulet to feel that I've achieved something. As a male, that sensation can be very rare sometimes. So, great purchasing experience (seller explained all about the watch and gave a decent Champagne bottle away to celebrate) and they had the watch ready for sell. About the watch: marvellous to look at and very accurate (mine is +1,4s a day certified) and people really get into the thing if you show the case back - so get the sapphire sandwich version (my advice). Watch collecting is about enjoying the journey and sometimes being lucky - so I wish you all best of fun and best of luck.
